You know you need to start overcoming low self esteem when you wake up in the morning, look in the mirror, and see a person you don’t like. When you look at your own reflection, and you only see your flaws, imperfections, and failures, follow these tips on overcoming low self esteem:

1. Think about your achievements, not your failures. The number one secret to overcoming low self esteem is to never forget the things you have already achieved. If possible, keep an achievement log or journal. Keep it in a place where you can easily see it like your bedside table. Look at it often, especially when you are feeling low.

2. Set goals and priorities. Achieving self confidence and overcoming low self esteem comes from setting priorities and goals and achieving them. Make plans on how to achieve these goals by using the SWOT analysis. Set your goals according to your strengths, find ways to defeat your weaknesses, grab every opportunity, and deal with every threat you will face.

3. Practice positive thinking. You will never be successful at overcoming low self esteem if you keep thinking negative thoughts. Often times, low self esteem comes from the negative voice inside your head. Maintain a rational, positive thinking.

4. Be yourself. Don’t pretend to be someone else just to please people. Only choose to do the things that you are comfortable doing. It is okay to listen to the advice of other people, but it is always best to decide according to what you feel is right. If you only live to please other people, you will only end up being frustrated. Instead of doing this, learn to please yourself. Do things that make you happy.

5. It’s okay to say no. Don’t say “yes” just because you are afraid to hurt a person’s feelings or let someone down. If you say yes, you have to mean it. Otherwise, you will end up doing the task halfheartedly. Doing something you don’t really feel like doing will make you unhappy. The results of the job you did may also be of low quality which will also make you unhappy and frustrated. Just make sure that you don’t come out rude when you say no. Being able to speak your mind and be firm about your position will help in overcoming low self esteem.

6. It’s okay to make mistakes. Make it an opportunity to grow and learn. How you react to success defines your personality. This is also true about your reaction to failure. If you continue beating yourself up over a failure, you will keep destroying your self esteem. If you accept that you are imperfect and you make mistakes, you will become a better person. It is important that you make this a habit. As a human being, it is in your nature to make mistakes, whichever way you go.

7. Accept responsibility for your own actions. There will be instances when you unintentionally let yourself or other people down. When this happens, stop making excuses. Accept them as the result of your own decisions. Overcoming low self esteem happens when you quit regretting and focus your energy and your mind to solving the problem. Don’t forget to say “I’m sorry.” It will make you feel better.

8. Lend a helping hand whenever you can. The real source of personal gratification is a sincere “thank you” from someone who appreciates your help. Stop worrying and thinking about your own sorrows. Start doing something for other people. The happiness you get from acts of kindness can help in overcoming low self esteem more than the possession of money, success, outside beauty, or fame.

These are just a few things you can do on your way to overcoming low self esteem. It is true that physical beauty like smooth skin and pretty hair can boost your confidence but nothing beats inner beauty. It is important to remember that overcoming low self esteem starts with yourself. You should be willing to work on having a healthier frame of mind. Your self esteem determines how you look at yourself. Don’t look for affirmations from other people. It is best to start seeing yourself as a unique individual and a beautiful person so you will succeed in overcoming low self esteem.
