7 Steps Toward “Parashifting” Away From Money Fears Holding You Back

  • Worrying about money — earning it, keeping it, having enough — might seem to be serving you by keeping you in line and helping you stick to your budget. But in fact, deeply-rooted beliefs and fears about money tend to be self-fulfilling prophecies. Thus financial security will come far more naturally and with less effort if you shift your worldview away from fears about money and instead, embrace the paradigm of abundance.

This can be accomplished through a process I call “parashifting.” Parashifting is about changing your beliefs and training yourself to see that despite your fears, we live in a world overflowing with possibilities. Focusing on possibilities rather than on anguish will allow you to recognize opportunities, and seize them.

Here are 7 steps to parashifting away from money fears toward a life of greater financial freedom and success:

 1. Stop focusing on scarcity and lack

Instead, become aware of the ways in which you allow these concepts to dominate your thought processes around money and finances, creating fears that hold you back.

 2. Overwrite!

Seek stories of progress, hope and opportunity with which to overwrite your scarcity and lack narrative. Notice how many there are around us!

 3. Stay abreast of positive innovations

Innovations abound in today’s creative, constantly evolving world. Become familiar with what’s happening in technology and medicine, for example, and how these amazing innovations can help increase abundance and well-being everywhere. Magazines like Discover and Scientific American are rich with examples. Focus on these rather than on the glut of news stories about devastation and ruin.

4. Shift your perspective

Drawing on what you’ve learned from the steps above, allow yourself to acknowledge and believe that the world is indeed an abundant place filled with growth and opportunity. See where this leads you.

5. Brainstorm

Give serious thought to creative ways to make financial dreams possible rather than saying, “No, that could never happen to me.”

6. Say no to fear

Don’t become overly obsessed by the fear of adverse events. Rather, remain hopeful and optimistic so that you can see possibilities rather than dangers. Fear can have its place, but it becomes debilitating when it blinds us to positive possibilities.

 7. Participate

You stand only to gain by participating generously in the world’s interconnected ecosystem. Thoughtfully embrace the opportunities the parashifting process will enable you to see.

Ultimately, you’ll discover a new mindset that encourages you to connect, to inspire, to collaborate and create.

Erin shows overscheduled, overwhelmed women how to do less so that they can achieve more. Traditional productivity books—written by men—barely touch the tangle of cultural pressures that women feel when facing down a to-do list. How to Get Sh*t Done will teach you how to zero in on the three areas of your life where you want to excel, and then it will show you how to off-load, outsource, or just stop giving a damn about the rest.
