8 Treacherous Thoughts That Stop You From Finding Your Passion

Is finding your passion proving impossible?

Have you been trying, trying, and trying, without results?

You’re not alone.

But here’s the good news: What’s stopping you isn’t what you think.

The obstacles is not out there. It’s inside of you. It’s the thoughts you choose to believe.

So what are those thoughts?

Here are 8 treacherous thoughts you may recognize:

1. “I Don’t Know Where to Start”

Just because you don’t know where to start doesn’t mean you can’t start.

You may want to read that sentence again.

What I’m pointing to is the fact that if you feel inspired, or drawn, to do something, you can always take the next step. The only thing holding you back is a thought that you believe in.

For example, for years I thought about starting a blog. I could’ve started, but I had excuses and reasons not to. In other words, thoughts that I chose to believe in, that held me back.

I didn’t think I was good enough, so I didn’t start. But when I started, I still had those same thoughts. The difference was that I didn’t give them as much attention. I was more focused on starting.

2. “I Have Too Many Interests”

Most people are multi-passionate. We all have buckets and buckets of ideas, interests, and passions.

The problem is thinking that you have to choose the right one. Or even thinking that you can choose the right one.

Your job isn’t to predict the future, or make sure things go well. Your job is to test the idea you’re most drawn to, and see what happens.

Instead of being a seer with a crystal ball, look at yourself as an experimenter with questions.

3. “I’m Not Good Enough”

Not being good enough is a thought that you entertain.

Having the thought doesn’t make it so. If you have the thought of not being good enough, it doesn’t mean you aren’t good enough.

The same holds true when you think that you don’t have anything special to offer the world. What matters is what you feel drawn to do. What your heart calls you to do.

If you feel drawn to write, write.

If you want to paint, then paint.

You may not be the best in the world, but then again, that’s another sign to start. How are you going to learn unless you start?

4. “What Will People Think?”

There’s a hidden assumption here.

If you’re worried about what others think, you also believe that how you feel, and how your life goes, is determined by making other people happy.

I’ve noticed something as I’ve traveled this path, and it’s simply this: The more I follow my heart, and am true to myself, the more people respect what I do. Everyone may not like it, but it reminds them of something within themselves.

In the end, it’s not my responsibility to make people happy. Our happiness is not determined by our circumstances, but by our thoughts.

This doesn’t mean you have to control your thinking. It just means you can take it less seriously.

And this doesn’t mean I’m not concerned about what people think, because sometimes I get caught up in my thoughts just like anyone else.

But I often snap out of it. I know it’s not real. It just feels real, because that’s how thoughts and feelings work.

5. “What If I Pick the Wrong Passion?”

So you pick the wrong one, so what?

You don’t know if picking the wrong one is exactly what needs to happen in order for you to get to where you need to be.

Are you starting to notice how many assumptions you have? I have them, too. I’m still noticing more and more of them.

We want to try and control the whole process, when in fact we aren’t in control. Life flows like a river. It’s not up to us to make the river go. It’s up to us to experience it. To ride it.

Your experience is determined by your thinking. You don’t have to control your thoughts, but simply notice how you create your experience of the world.

6. “What If It’s All for Nothing?”

What if you waste time following your passion?

Not possible.

Ultimately, you want to be happy, right? And when you’re doing what you love, and following your heart, you feel joyful.

Peaceful.

Calm.

How can that ever be a waste of time?

The only time when you’re wasting time is listening to a thought telling you that you’re wasting time.

Why? Because by believing the thought, you’re held back from exploring the world.

7. “Finding My Passion Should Be Easy”

It’s easy to believe that we’re entitled to a problem-free life, but it doesn’t work that way.

Life is made up of two sides. Hot and cold. Black and white. Up and down. We could get into a philosophical discussion about this, but the fact is that you’re constantly growing and changing.

That means that you will sometimes struggle. Life will be challenging. Sometimes even painful.

That’s not the problem.

The problem is thinking that it should be any other way. Finding your passion may not be easy, but it also doesn’t have to be hard.

What will make it hard is trying to figure it out, or trying to control the process. What will make it easy is getting out of your own way, and letting your inner wisdom guide you.

And taking things one step at a time.

You see, you don’t have to know what your passion is in order to follow your heart, your interests, and your wisdom.

8. “I Don’t Have Time”

To find and follow your passion doesn’t require quitting your job, leaving your family, or doing anything radical.

That’s another idea you have had up until now of how things should be. Even if you have 5 minutes per day, you can explore your passions.

You can do what you love.

There’s nothing magical involved.

Time is not an issue, unless you make it one.

The Secret to Living Your Passion

I’ve found that everyone already knows where to go, what to do, and what their passion is.

It’s not that we’re confused. It’s that we make ourselves confused by trying to figure it all out. By trying to do that which we cannot do.

The trying to figure it out gets in the way of figuring it out. It’s not that life makes it hard. It’s that we make it hard.

As you go about your day today, notice the kind of assumptions and thoughts that stop you from doing what you love, and following your passion.

Don’t worry about controlling anything. Just notice what’s going on.

And enjoy it.

Do what you can with what you have.

That’s enough.
