Do you believe that your life has a specific purpose? I must confess that I have not always thought this way, but gradually, my beliefs were changed, over the course of many years, and now I remain absolutely convinced that life does indeed hold a specific, unique purpose for each of us; that we are all here for a reason, and the most important thing we can do in life, is to find our own unique calling and then, dedicate ourselves to fulfilling it.
As modern society, particularly in the west, has gradually distanced itself from the idea of God, it has largely abandoned the idea that life can have any purpose at all, let alone that individuals might be destined to achieve something specific, and important, within this iteration of our existence. In my experience, even those who do believe in God can have similar difficulty – I vividly remember a religious friend telling me, on one occasion, that he did not believe that God had a plan for everyone.
This notion of a having a specific life purpose (or calling) is of course, inextricably bound up with the existence of a higher plane of existence, because, in order to be called, there must surely also be a caller and that is, I think, the great obstacle for many people these days i.e. who or what could possibly be doing the calling?
Modern thinking within the self-development genre seems to have little difficulty with the possibility of the existence of some higher power. Many books on the subject of The Law of Attraction, for example, relate to the idea of an intelligent universe, a cosmic consciousness, a universal mind or, as Wallace D Wattles put it, in his classic The Science of Getting Rich, ‘the thinking stuff from which all things are made’.
Whatever your own belief system may be, it is certainly not my goal to challenge it, other than to suggest to you that, however you might personally frame the notion of the caller, do not dismiss the thought that you are personally called. You are called to achieve something significant in this life and, within your heart, you know this is true. Deep with your heart there is an unfulfilled dream or desire, whether or not you are able to articulate it, and that dream is the essence of your life purpose.
Perhaps you already know what your dream looks like, or perhaps you have never yet dared to dream about what your life could be like. But either way, even if you are presently unaware of it, that desire is there, deep with your heart, waiting for you to wake up, understand your own life purpose and commit yourself to its ultimate fulfilment.
What do you think would happen to your life if you were to do that?
You will ultimately need to prove the truth of this assertion to yourself, but the fact is that everything will change when you start living your life purpose. It really is the number one key to achieving outstanding success; the kind of success you really want, that will bring you all the happiness and satisfaction you really seek.
But, of course, you need to be brave enough to look deep with yourself, to understand your wants and needs, your strengths and weaknesses, your talents and aspirations, and identify that one thing you were born to achieve. The person you were meant to become is, most certainly, capable of living your dream. But if you are never bold enough to submit yourself to self-examination, you will most likely, miss the best life you are capable of living; the one you are here to live – your own specific, unique life purpose.
So, the question naturally arises: do you think you are brave enough?
And, just in case you don’t, always remember that, as Pooh says in the Disney movie Pooh’s Grand Adventure, “you are braver than you believe, stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
