5 Steps to Detoxify Your Inner Self

Have you ever felt like you were bloated with all the negative thoughts that you have created for yourself? Have you ever been under deep pressure and felt so greasy of trouble and wanted some good shower of relaxation? Have you ever made a decision and ended up with unexpected consequences that you instantly craved to dip yourself in a river to cleanse all the troubles attached to the situation you were in?

It is true that we need to detoxify our bodies with all the junks around in what we eat and what we have in the environment.  But there is more truth to our need to cleanse inner self with negativity.

It’s time to get ourselves in to a mini-retreat with 5 steps to healthier inner self.

#1. Compose yourself

Synergistic Psychotherapy recommends a breathing exercise to compose oneself coming from any stressful situation. “Take five deep breaths, holding each one to a count of five before releasing it. Clear your thoughts completely and repeat to yourself “I am relaxed” whenever a stressful thought tries to make its way in to your head.”

I have learned that even one deep breath helps change attitudes.  It’s like gaining some courage when you breathe deeply and spewing out fear when you breathe out.

#2. Make a personal inventory.

If you are making a spring cleaning for your house, you must be familiar with the current state of your abode somehow and still, you need to organize yourself to be able to get things done.  As with yourself, make a stock tick and see how your inner self account is doing.

You can ask yourself these questions and list them down in a notebook:

  • What are the things that bother me often?
  • What are the things that I do well and bring the best in me and in those that are important to me?

Applying this myself, I am always on the lookout for emotions or thoughts that occupy my mind a lot of times.  They can be nuances, issues or disappointments that are borne out of my own expectation and not of anyone else.

#3.  Explore self-acceptance

There are many facets in our life where we somehow know we perform our worse. Yet, as this is not a pleasant thing to face, we deny it to ourselves.  As such, these weak parts of ourselves are often neglected and are not nurtured.

Another expert from Psychology Today, Leon Seltzer suggests his clients to explore on parts of themselves that they have not yet accepted.  He says “it’s only when we stop judging ourselves that we can secure a more positive sense of who we are.”

I used to be a lot distanced over my emotions.  Perhaps a result of being brought up in an environment where there is less expression of feelings, I unconsciously denied those inner rumblings that shaped some of my subconscious thoughts that included self-criticisms. Only until I have been aware of those inner criticisms that I have learned to accept myself for who I am.  And in acceptance, the next step came knocking at my door!

#4. Cross-out extra baggage and unnecessary things

As we make our personal inventory and explore self-acceptance, there is a lot of clutter that we carry deep inside of us.  These are things that are useless, old and unnecessary.  You can start crossing them out of the list if they are trifles.  What could they be?

  • Reminiscing old relationships that turned sour
  • Regrets and resentments- the what-ifs, what-shouldas and what-couldas.
  • Personal tastes or inclination that are unnecessary

When I find myself in these situations, I throw them out of the bin once and for all and forget them telling myself gently, “Cut it off, you have better things to do.”

#5. Self-denial

The last step to inner self detox would be setting out oneself back into the real world and practice a pinch of mortification- that is, self-control in small and even trivial matters.

How about choosing to practice this in small but practical exercises such as reducing time spent on Facebook or fitness-related discipline such as going to gym as scheduled?

By doing less trivial matters, I save time finishing my work or chores and thereby give me more time spent on family or personal development such as reading a book!

Moving On

Going through this, I have developed a healthier inner self and enabled me to move higher in the path to self-improvement.

Are you up to the challenge of detoxifying your inner self?  Are you tired of desiring to change but not able to do so? Do you need a partner to spur up your self-improvement?

Dispose yourself into a personal improvement project by detoxifying yourself.
