The Importance of Indulging

Have you ever indulged?  In fact, what does it even mean to indulge?

Most of our waking lives are consumed by what has to be done in order to survive.  We shower to be clean, eat either to live or just to consume, buy in order to feel better or feel powerful, watch TV for distraction or boredom.  Our lives and activities become forms of distractions or have to’s and we begin to forget how wonderful simplicity can feel.

So, have you ever indulged?

When you hear this, I’m sure you think of things like eating an entire box of chocolates or buying yourself a 58” television or some kind of activity where you completely spoil yourself with a need to feel like you are treating yourself to something your normally would not do.  I suppose most people think of this when they think of indulging, but I challenge you to see it a different way.

To me, indulging has a way of being associated with something kind of mindless. Something that people do because they are so tired with their day to day lifestyle that they need a break from the norm and an escape into something that is normally taboo in their life; something they normally stay clear of.  But when I say it is good to indulge, what I mean to say is this: have you ever considered a person, a place or a thing, perhaps a favorite book or song, the park, the smell after it rains, your significant other, your child, the wind as it lightly touches your skin on a sunny day and truly admired it for what it is?  Have you ever acknowledged it or indulged in it in every aspect and understood it for all that it is worth and respected it for all of its possibilities?

We go through our days not realizing that every moment could be a moment of indulgence.  Every day we could take something we would pass up as normal and indulge in it, rather than waiting for a day every month where we “take a break to spoil ourselves”, because everything around us isn’t worth indulging over.

Don’t always think of indulging for superficial pleasure, begin to indulge because you sincerely want to feel and know on a different level.  Indulge in drinking water, don’t just drink the water, admire its beauty, taste every single part of it as it touches your lips, your teeth, your taste buds.  Feel it as it goes down your throat and into your entire body as it helps sustain your life and quench your thirst.  If the elevator at work is broken and you have to take the stairs, indulge in that action.  Walk up the stairs with a sense of pride, know that at that moment you are alive, that your legs are pushing you up in a vertical motion, you are defying gravity by moving upward, your heart is pumping the blood inside of you in order to keep you moving.  When you are eating the same meal for lunch for the third day in a row, taste everything that went into that meal, taste the freedom of being able to eat, feel the energy as it goes into your body, smell the richness in your life that you are putting into your body.  Indulge.

Try this and notice the difference it makes in your daily life.  See and feel every aspect of what is around you.  Next time you come across a simple moment in your life, indulge in it in the way that I have stated above.  Don’t just go through the motions, actually live the motions, be that moment.

Walk through life knowing why and how you are walking.  Indulge every once in a while in the pleasures that you don’t normally see as a pleasure.

Will you take this challenge?

Thanks Ariana for different post :) .
Recently I have started “Indulging” by playing Snake & Ladder game with my 8 year old Daughter – after I come home from work. It’s a different feeling and gives me the joy for playing that game which I played many years back.

Do you consider this as Indulging?

      Hi Chetan,

First of all, yes, I consider this indulging. Mainly because you are taking something that could be seen as so simple, yet you are transforming it into an enjoyable and mind changing activity; it is relaxing and feel good in a different way.

Second of all, thank you for your kind words.

    Hi Ariana,
    Great name btw.
I like what you are saying here and I also have made this shift. Take pleasure in the little in life. Simplicity will become the norm for many in my opinion.

A great example of indulgence is the ski life during the winter up here in Canada. It’s not just a matter of putting on skis and sliding down the mountain. It’s about prepping the night before for clothing, meals, getting to bed early for the early morning departure. Then is the drive up and enjoying the fresh snow before the crowds come in. Then it’s enjoying the ski company where others who are liked minded and just as crazy as you are for being outside in the cold. Then there’s the ski lunch and social times as well as helping each other down those steep slopes. That’s indulgence.

      Hey Clint,
That IS indulgence right there. As I read your comment I could picture everything you were saying. There is an excitement in the preparation to being one with nature. An excitement as you breeze down the slopes with something so simple and amazing as the people and snow around you.

      Hey Moresio,

Eventually, indulging won’t even be something you need to be mindful of, it will come naturally :) .

I guess that’s just another way of not taking things for granted. I remember how amazing my computer was when I first got it – I was in awe of it! – I thought it was so fantastic. Now I just get mad at it and call it a piece of junk as often as not. I don’t see the wonder of it anymore. I think what you’re talking about is the way we saw the world when we were children – everything seemed magical. A blade of grass or a scab on your knee! We saw everything with fresh eyes and couldn’t understand why our parents seemed so bored with everything. It would be great if we could recapture that sense of wonder. That would be true happiness.

    • http://www.aplaceinthepattern.com ariana | a place in the pattern

      Hey Jeree,

In a way you could see this as a form of not taking things for granted. Yet, when I think of not taking things for granted I think of being grateful for the things you have. Mainly a gratitude toward whatever it is that sustains your ability to live and the people around you. When I think of indulging I think of getting past the acknowledgment of appreciation and understanding the thing you are grateful for. In a way immersing yourself, allowing your entire self to be influenced for that entire time. As you said, seeing things like we did when we were children, seeing the magic, feeling the magic. Getting that sense of wonder back among the everyday would be amazing:).

      Thank you for your words.

Thank you for putting what I’ve always thought in writing! Im going to piggy back off of Jeree. As children we do have those fresh eyes and a fresh mind. Everything that is presented to us as kids, we are just learning so its easy to be fascinated with it. To an experienced adult, everything just eventually becomes mundane. To cope with this fact of life, I personally try not to over-indulge in anything. Moderation is key. Anyway, back to the point of your article….Life could be so much more meaningful for us all if we would really just stop to smell the flowers :)

    • http://www.aplaceinthepattern.com ariana | a place in the pattern

      Hi Lisa,

      Thank you :)

As adults we do begin to allow ourselves to see things as mundane. The freshness that we have as children gradually starts to dissipate as responsibilities and life situations/struggles begin to set in.

I think it is important to not allow ourselves to become too influenced by the things in our everyday life that suck the freshness out of us. In a way, we have to stop and smell the flowers in order to realize were the real mundane is and where the real fascination begins.
