So many great points, Eric, I hardly know where to begin! “Stop hanging out” is my favorite b/c I’ve never heard it put quite that way before, and it perfectly captures the problem with being idle! A lot of people think being busy is being productive, but, of course, that’s not true. If your work — however busy you are — bores you to death, then you are doing the right work for you, so you can’t possibly do your best work or be the best, happiest person you can be. I wrote about this in a post called “Lessons on Boredom from ‘The Joy of Not Working’” at http://shanelyang.com/2008/08/31/lessons-on-boredom-from-the-joy-of-not-working/

Great article Eric! It’s just what I needed to read this morning. I’m at the point where I really need to take control of my life and your tips are much appreciated! Peace to you my friend.

I just wrote a lot about this in Transcending Limiting Beliefs. In a nutshell, it’s comforting to live your life thinking you’re not in control, because it removes personal responsibility from your life. But you can only forfeit authority over your life for so long before seeing the truth: you are in control of everything.

For some people, this takes many years.

Great list – and I’m glad you allowed for some “staring at the clouds” time. I am probably guilty of a little too much of that, but I just love it.

There is always the “weasel shift”, as Scott Adams puts it. If you have a job that has a few things you like and many that you dont…you just gradually start doing more of what you like and less of what you dont like. If you do it right, you can retire while still getting paid…

Seriously, though, sometimes it pays to take a shot at something that interests you. go out on a limb and make a suggestion if you see something you think you could do better. You would be suprised how often this leads to better opportunites.

As Napoleon Hill said, the only way one has any right to even desire a raise in pay is to do more than you are paid for.

    Great article,

It’s hard to pick a #1 choice, but for me it is “Play Hot Potato With Your TO-DOs”. I choose it, because I’ve never heard of it that way before. What a great visual.

I just wrote an article explaining how to do point #6 – Have Mini-Tasks Ready for Unexpected Down Times. The post is found : http://successprofessor.ca/2008/09/08/how-to-turn-%E2%80%9Cdown-time%E2%80%9D-into-%E2%80%9Cbonus-time%E2%80%9D/

Eating deliberately is more important than most of us ever realize. Also, give yourself an allowance. Tre important.

  • http://winningeveryone.com Jephthah@WE

I couldn’t agree more with this point, that is to Dream big with every intention of pursuing. We must not let our dreams die without even making a single attempt to pursue it. IF we never try, we’ll never know!

  • http://motivatethyself.com “Motivate Thyself”

@Writer Dad: “Eating deliberately is more important than most of us ever realize. ”

I definitely don’t thing there is enough awareness about how directly food affects your mood and productivity.

@Jephthah: “IF we never try, we’ll never know!”

That’s a great way of putting it.

I’m gonna do the first three points right away. The first point, I have very few doubts about it. Hanging out, this could be the most challenging. I’ll crack it anyway. Eating deliberately. I’ve always loved this.

Bring in some order. Bring it in. Bring it.

double posting can be annyoing. I’ll go back to my roots on this one… Hellen Keller once said: “mrrrrheeeewwrewrrrr”. .  …. I mean she once wrote that “Security is mosly superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men experience it. Security, in the long run is no safer that outright  exposure. Life is either a darang adventure, or nothing. To  behave like free spirits in the presence of fate is strength  undefeatable.” – - Hellen Keller.
