You write “…most people agree that you should try and get eight 8 ounce glasses per day.”

Really? Where exactly has this been surveyed?

    More to the point:

It can be dangerous to go merely with what “most people” believe. There’s a name for that fallacy: Appeal to Popular Opinion.

David – Thank you for collecting & sharing all these thoughts. Your common thread of ‘self care’ ties these diverse concepts together beautifully.

Drew – I think you may have misconstrued the water suggestion. Your quote from the article omits the modifying context: “While there is some DEBATE as to how much water is necessary…”. Your criticism, while illustrating a useful guideline for criticial thinking is, in this instance, misplaced.

I think sleep is a major area of concern for a lot of people and they aren’t even aware of it. If I only feel tired and don’t know what harm is really being done than I can keep on not sleeping enough. It is my experience that warnings like “Lack of sleep can lead to serious, life-threatening health problems” people have a hard time taking that serious, especially if there is no evidence to support the argument. Although I would never dispute that fact. I mention this because I just read an interesting report on the link between memory and sleep. “Sleep deprivation experiments have shown that a tired brain has a difficult time capturing memories of all sorts… deprivation is more likely to cause us to forget information associated with positive emotion than information linked to negative emotion.” That to me was serious, I will remember more negative stuff than positive if I loose sleep. I try to eliminate as much negative clutter in my head as possible so I am hitting the bed early tonight because I love happy memories.

Drew – Thank you for weighing in. As Craig pointed out, I acknowledged that there is debate. Even your link points out that the 8 glasses is a common belief. As for agreement, I point you to the Mayo Clinic, which says that most doctors suggest 8 to 9 cups per day. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/water/NU00283 Regardless of the amount, one cannot claim that drinking water doesn’t benefit the body. And this article is about things your body needs.

Personally, I’d rather drink a bit more than necessary than not enough. I’ve suffered dehydration before, so I know how easy it is to not consider your water needs. If this article can help people to remember to keep hydrated, then awesome.

Craig – thank you for the nice words.

Judging from your list, what I’m lacking the most of is exercise and perhaps clean air. Both could be easily fixed if I bite the bullet and plan to make the changes.
