Really enjoyed this article. Some very good points made.

Unfortunately, and perhaps wrongly, I assumed the quotes in italics would be THE Biblical quotes, with the author’s comments below. Clearly that was not the case, which is a shame.

As a theologian in training, I respectfully urge you, when writing an article like this, to use a good/academically respected Bible translation e.g. NRSV.

The other reason is because, well, quote 2 actually reads and sounds better (naturally) when the translation is accurate. Here’s now the NRSV reads:

26Look at the birds of the air; they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?

27And can any of you by worrying add a single hour to your span of life?
28And why do you worry about clothing? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they neither toil nor spin,

29yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these……….

34 ‘So do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will bring worries of its own. Today’s trouble is enough for today. (Gospel of Matthew, Ch 6)

What a wonderfully written article. It’s incredibly refreshing to find the wisdom of Jesus amidst the ocean of inane information on the Internet — not referring to Pick the Brain, of course. This is the site that published it! :)

It’s all there – God has given us the guidelines for a full and successful life. The Bible isn’t written in our familiar language of pop self-help, but look no further, the Bible has what we need, now more than ever, for our complex lives in a post-modern world.

    Peter,

What a timely message for Easter. The Golden Rule is my number one rule. What I do for others I do for myself.

Well written article and wonderful quotes! I especially like #2 “There Is A Cure For Worry.” A lot of times we are so tied up making ends meet that we often forget to pause and appreciate the beauty of life and the things that we possess. We worry so much, making it more impossible to find happiness in life.

Thanks Marco. Yes leave worry behind and live to your full potential. I love what you say about pausing and appreciating – as it is so important to do this on a daily basis. We have so much to give thanks for.

It was a pleasure reading every line you’ve written on this post Peter. Great job!

    Good stuff.

Just one thing I’m not 100% comfortable with though. You mentioned: “The first step forward to develop this love in your life is to learn to pray. I have found prayer to be an incredibly energising practice…”

I understand that it’s only a “practice” to you, but honestly if you really want to know the true meanings of what the Bible teaches it’s way more than just that.

It’s about a relationship with a living God. Only when you fully open your heart and let Him in will you ever experience true joy and lasting peace and will you fully understand what the Bible teaches us.

And yes, I found many self-help books by different authors who teach these same principals you find throughout the Bible and they do work, which is great.

But like I said, there is much more to it than just a practice…

I will probably get some stick from a lot of people for speaking my mind on this subject, which is fine. That too is in the Bible by the way.

Keep up the good work!! :-)

    Hi Josh

Practice? To quote you – ‘It’s about a relationship with a living God.’ I agree with what you said Josh. Thanks for pointing it out.
