10 Quotes To Change Your Momentum

We’ve all been there. We’re out of ideas and nothing new is coming to our tired and weary minds. When these moments strike, I’ve always been a fan of reading quotes to get me out of that funk, whether it’s writing a term paper or coming up with new business ventures.

You could type, “Awesome business quotes” into Google.com and waste a couple hours or if you need just a quick read, then I’ve got you covered. I’ve found several quotes from the people who actually know what they’re talking about. I hope you find one that makes you stop and think.

Direct from the titans of industry,

“As long as you’re going to be thinking anyway, think big.” – Donald Trump

“I think a smart woman can sell the average man anything,” – Leo Burnett

“I will tell you how to become rich. Close the doors. Be fearful when others are greedy. Be greedy when others are fearful.” Warren Buffet

“There are moments in our lives when we summon the courage to make choices that go against reason, against common sense and the wise counsel of people we trust. But we lean forward nonetheless because, despite all risks and rational argument, we believe that the path we are choosing is the right and best thing to do. We refuse to be bystanders, even if we do not know exactly where our actions will lead.” – Howard Schultz (CEO of Starbucks)

“Here’s to the crazy ones, the misfits, the rebels, the troublemakers… The ones who see things differently. They’re not fond of rules. You can quote them, disagree with them, glorify or vilify them, but the only thing you can’t do is ignore them because they change things. They push the human race forward, and while some may see them as the crazy ones, we see genius, because the ones who are crazy enough to think that they can change the world, are the ones who do.” -Steve Jobs

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.” – Bill Gates

Give me a stock clerk with a goal and I’ll give you a man who will make history. Give me a man with no goals and I’ll give you a stock clerk. – J.C. Penney

These men have summed up exactly what is important when thinking of new ideas. Don’t think small, think as big as you can and don’t focus on whether it’ll be a success or a failure right away – that’ll come later. Ultimately, you have to trust yourself and your instincts. The critics out there will always find something to complain about, so there’s no reason to worry about them.

As long as you have an imagination and the will to work hard, you’ll be great! Take a deep breathe, go for a walk, just get out of the current mindset you’re in and watch as things fall into place.

Some other quotes to use for another rainy day,

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”  Maya Angelou

“It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”- Thomas Alva Edison

I think defining the word, “success” is one of those words that is impossible to do so. For some people, it’s having a Scrooge McDuck vault of gold coins at their disposable. For others, having money to go out to dinner twice a week is considered a success. Either way, as long as you’re happy with yourself, what you do, and how you did it, you’re a success!

You can’t beat the old standby, “try, try, try again” to get you through those tough times. But it’s so true! Even though your idea didn’t work the first time, that doesn’t mean you’re a failure. It’s really easy to get swept up in that mindset, but resist the urge and try something new the next time.

Don’t forget,

Don’t let those disastrous thoughts of not being good enough or failing at everything you try stop you. You may be right on the path towards greatness and each failed attempt is leading you closer to the successful ending you’ve been searching for.

Just keep plugging away and when you get stuck, consult these quotes and think about the person who originally said them. If they stopped at every bump in the road, they probably wouldn’t have ended up where they did. Now, go get ‘em tiger!

I like the quote you have from Maya Angelou. “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.”  Some people would define what is success but what matters most is what you think it is. I like this a lot and I think this is how it should be.

    • Amy Swanson

I totally agree with you, Agatha! Nobody else’s opinion matters but your own. As soon as you start listening to what others think, doubt sneaks in. Thanks so much for stopping by and commenting :-)

  • Swagatika Ps

    I completely agree with Agatha

I really like the Warren Buffet & FDR quotes. Be contrarian or not, but do something…

    • Amy Swanson

Exactly, Alex. Don’t just sit around and wait for something to happen, MAKE it happen! It’s such simple advice, but can easily be forgotten. Thanks for the comment!

    Hi Amy,

Quotes are indeed helpful to remind and inspire us when we are stuck in a rut and see no other way out.  Of the quotes you have put together, the following stand out most for me.

“Success is a lousy teacher. It seduces smart people into thinking they can’t lose.” – Bill Gates

This is very true.  Success can make a person complacent.  And when they stumble or fall as they invariably would, it might be a fall they cannot recover from.  It is harder to be vigilant when one enjoys a string of successes.  Indeed, we must think big to succeed, but we must also be watchful and alert to ensure success is not going to our heads.

“It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” – Franklin D. Roosevelt

It is the trying and taking action that produces results.  But to go one step further, we need to take different kinds of action if one approach is not working.  Success comes naturally and eventually after that.

Thank you for sharing this lovely article!

      Hey Irving,

When I’m stressed out, reading quotes always relaxes me and gets things back in perspective. So, I’m glad some of these stood out for you too! I love your line, “it is the trying and taking action that produces results.” A success doesn’t just come from out of nowhere, it takes time, a lot of patience, and a lot of failed attempts.

I’m so glad you enjoyed my post, and thank you for leaving such an awesome comment! Have a great Friday! :-)

I love the Bill Gates quote. Even though success feels better, it definitely sets you up to fall hard the first time you fail. A handful of failures scattered throughout your life will definitely help you grow the determination to “try, try again!”

Thanks for the wonderful article! :)

    • Amy Swanson

Thanks, Mandy :-) I had never heard or read Bill’s quote before, so when I did for this post I had to include it. It’s something that I had never thought of before, but is so true. Those successes can lead up to a whole lot of, “well, I did it once before and it worked, obviously it’ll work again” thoughts. Not true. You can’t get a big head, staying modest and working hard is the only way to go.

Thanks so much for stopping by!!

    Great post!

OMG… I have not heard anyone reference “Scrooge McDuck” or his vault of coins for years. When I was growing up I always told my parents that I was going to have such a vault in my backyard where all my friends and I would play. Discovery Zone was SO 1990s… A vault filled with gold coins large enough to play hide and seek in is where it’s REALLY at.

Back on topic… I’m a FIRM believer that SUCCESS is always just right around the corner for those who give up. I think it’s best to explain with an example:

Person A tries really hard to make it big but they fail. They try again, but they still fail. After two tries Person A gives up – all while success was only ONE MORE TRY AWAY.

That one more try away is what keeps me going.

    • Amy Swanson

I couldn’t resist including the “Scrooge McDuck” reference, you have to use ‘em when you can ;-)

Your “one more try” idea is one that a lot of people can and should use. You just never know what’s in store, and by giving up you’re basically admitting to yourself that you don’t care enough to find out. Success doesn’t just wait to fall on people, it’s earned.

Thanks Bret for your truly amazing comment!

I have to say that this is a pretty great set of great quotes. A Jim Rohn quote could have been included, but each one above is a barn-burner when it comes to improving changes… Great stuff!!!!

I’m glad you liked them, Damiso :-) For my next blog I’ll be sure to include some Jim Rohn quotes! Thanks for stopping by!

  • Steve Wagner

“It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit
it frankly and try another. But above all, try something.” – Franklin D.
Roosevelt This is probably my favorite quote. I think it really states something about what we need to do. My generation is not very decisive. We need to live like this. We are going to fail, be rejected from things, made fun of, and rebuked for many things in out lives. Just get over it, and try something new.

    • Amy Swanson

Couldn’t agree more, Steve. Failure is inevitable and something that we need to accept. It sucks, but we learn from it so that we become better people. I think adding, “Just get over it, and try something new” – Steve Wagner should be added to a quote list. Well said!

      Thanks for the awesome comment!!

    Great collection……Thanks for PTB

  • http://pristineperception.com/ Suzanne

For me the most important is realizing or understanding what we do today will affect tomorrow. If we fail at something it is leading us toward something else. To embrace all that is happening now, that it will somehow serve us in the future. Like Steve Jobs. He dropped out of College but hung around. In that he took a calligraphy class which he had no interest in. Because of that, we have font on computers.. Imagine that.

    • Amy Swanson

Excellent point, Suzanne! As cliche as it sounds, ‘everything happens for a reason’, what may seem like a failure may be the answer down the road and end up bring us success in something else. You can’t give up. Thanks for commenting!

A very wise way that these quotes are! My favorite one is “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” Always do what you like doing in life!

    • Amy Swanson

That’s one of my favorites too, Dennis! You only have to impress yourself, after that it doesn’t matter. Bonus quote: “If you love what you do, you’ll never work a day in your life”

  • http://twitter.com/JillTooley Jill Tooley

“Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.”- Thomas Alva Edison
This one hits home pretty hard today, so thank you. Awesome post! It seems like discouragement smacks me in the face every couple of weeks and it’s always tough to shake it. Quotes are good for a morale boost, though! ;)

    • http://www.qualitylogoproducts.com/ Amy Swanson

I’m so glad one of these quotes hit close to home, Jill! I’m a huge sucker for reading through google pages of nothing but quotes to get me through whatever mood I’m in. It’s just always reassuring to know that someone else is/was going through this, they got through it, so you will too! Hope the rest of your day goes better :)

I really think that people have gotten less wiser over the years because people don’t really talk this way anymore. With actual thought and wisdom.
