{"id":9203,"date":"2012-02-15T21:56:40","date_gmt":"2012-02-16T05:56:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=9203"},"modified":"2013-09-17T09:39:37","modified_gmt":"2013-09-17T17:39:37","slug":"practice-not-doing-and-do-more","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/practice-not-doing-and-do-more\/","title":{"rendered":"Practice Not Doing, And Do More"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/Screen-shot-2012-02-15-at-5.21.44-PM.png\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Want to know what drains your energy more than anything else?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s thinking.\u00a0 Believe it or not, your brain uses lots of energy when you&#8217;re thinking.\u00a0 I don&#8217;t mean the kind of thinking you do when you are focused on what you are doing, and thinking about the best way to go about it.\u00a0 Of course that takes mental energy, but I&#8217;m talking about the <strong>endless internal dialogue<\/strong> that&#8217;s always running in the back of your mind as you go about your day.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s the thinking you do while you&#8217;re doing everything else on &#8220;auto pilot&#8217;.\u00a0 Ever drive home from the grocery store, but don&#8217;t remember any of the driving?\u00a0 Unfortunately we do that all the time, and it&#8217;s how lots of accidents happen.<\/p>\n<p>You&#8217;re driving home from work or wherever, and you&#8217;re thinking about what your mother said last week, or about what you are going to say to so and so next week.\u00a0 The mind gets lost in it&#8217;s endless internal dialogue, and much of life goes by without you ever seeing it.\u00a0 Everything is always the same, never new, and interesting.\u00a0 You eat dinner, watch the same old TV shoes, go to bed at the same time each night, endlessly repeating the same old routines.\u00a0 Always tired.<\/p>\n<p>Want to know how to have a lot more energy?&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Focus your mind <em>only<\/em> upon the task at hand &#8212; what you are doing.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t think about things that have nothing to do with the moment.<\/p>\n<p>Many people think that they have to always be thinking about things or their whole world will crumble.\u00a0 It won&#8217;t.\u00a0 All of that useless thinking, only sucks your energy.\u00a0 If you&#8217;re worried about forgetting important things, make lists.\u00a0 When you are focused on something, and a thought about some important event, that you need to remember crosses your mind, write it down. Then pay attention to what you&#8217;re doing.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s not easy.\u00a0 When you&#8217;ve developed a habit of indulging in an endless internal dialogue, your mind keeps wanting to slip back into it.\u00a0 There&#8217;s a simple way to stop it&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Break Routines<\/p>\n<p>Routines support the internal dialogue.\u00a0 Doing things on &#8220;auto pilot&#8221; allows you to go around talking to yourself &#8212; which is really what you are doing.\u00a0 It&#8217;s not much different from the guys sitting around on park benches talking to people who aren&#8217;t there.\u00a0 The only difference is that no one can hear you doing it.\u00a0 Thank God for that!<\/p>\n<p>The ancient Toltecs developed a practice they called, &#8220;not doing&#8221;.\u00a0 Not doing is the perfect thing to silence your internal dialogue.\u00a0 Before I tell you how to do it, let&#8217;s look at some of the benefits?&#8230;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Life will seem interesting and new again.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll have increased perception since you won&#8217;t be lost somewhere in your mind.<\/li>\n<li>You will become much more efficient since you will actually be paying attention to what you are doing.\u00a0 The quality of your work will improve.<\/li>\n<li>You won&#8217;t forget things as easily, since you will be writing them down instead of just thinking about them.<\/li>\n<li>Others will perceive you as having more presence.<\/li>\n<li>You&#8217;ll have more time to do things you enjoy, and more energy to do it with.<\/li>\n<li>As a result of all these accomplishments, <strong>your self esteem will soar<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Not doing is simply not doing things the same way you have always done them.\u00a0 It forces you to pay attention.\u00a0 For example&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>Examine your life, and look for routines, then find other things you can do to replace them, or simply do them differently.\u00a0 Do you always watch TV after dinner?\u00a0 Read a good novel instead.\u00a0 Do you always eat breakfast before you take a shower in the morning?\u00a0 Swap them around, and remember to pay attention to the showering and eating.\u00a0 Don&#8217;t get lost in your mind.\u00a0 You&#8217;ll save on hot water too!<\/p>\n<p>Do you tend to eat the same things?\u00a0 Try something new.\u00a0 Make healthier choices.<\/p>\n<p>Instead of Facebooking, go for a walk, or do some yoga.\u00a0 Look carefully for all the ways in which you can practice not doing.\u00a0 Or, as the Toltec&#8217;s say, &#8220;stalk yourself&#8221;.\u00a0 Stalk yourself like a jaguar stalking it&#8217;s pray.\u00a0 <strong>Pay attention<\/strong> to what you are doing.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>Sky Abelar is a Reiki Master Teacher, and the creator of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.self-esteem-guru.com\/\">Self Esteem Guru<\/a> website.
