{"id":69812,"date":"2019-09-13T04:58:45","date_gmt":"2019-09-13T12:58:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=69812"},"modified":"2019-09-17T15:49:57","modified_gmt":"2019-09-17T23:49:57","slug":"fundamentals-to-workplace-well-being","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/fundamentals-to-workplace-well-being\/","title":{"rendered":"Fundamentals to Workplace Well-being"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div>\n<p>In this article, I\u2019ll be arguing why value and respect are\nfundamental to workplace well-being, not salary or perks. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.independent.co.uk\/voices\/staff-wellbeing-work-life-balance-workplace-culture-happiness-a8384101.html\">The\nIndependent<\/a>, Cary Cooper and Ivan Robertson hit the nail on the head when\nthey said, <em>\u201cThere is a real difference between happiness gimmicks and\nworking in a well-being culture.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A well-being culture, they refer to as <em>\u201cOne that values\npeople, manages them by praise and reward rather than fault-finding, and that\nenables them to work flexibly and provides them with work-life balance.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All too often workplace well-being is ceremoniously honoured\nthrough fruit bowls, the odd free lunch and if employees are lucky the\noccasional massage. Employers have jumped on the bandwagon with trendy\ninitiatives that are supposedly the key to keeping employees happy and well,\nbut have they missed the point? <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How often are well-being programmes borne out of a genuine compassion for employees? Is workplace well-being simply being seen as the latest business initiative that promises to unlock greater productivity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><figcaption><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pexels.com\/sv-se\/foto\/affar-arbete-arbetsplats-arbetssatt-1081228\/\">Pixels<\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Employee well-being\nisn\u2019t boosted by perks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The key to happiness and well-being at work isn\u2019t perks. Now\nubiquitous with employee wellness programmes, yoga classes, gym subscriptions\nand breakfast smoothies are great, but they don\u2019t constitute workplace\nwell-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Things are nothing more than glorified perks, and while\nnice, they do nothing to address the real <a href=\"https:\/\/worksmart.org.uk\/health-advice\/getting-help\/dealing-doctors\/what-work-related-ill-health\">causes\nof ill-health in the workplace<\/a>, such as backache, RSI, eye-strain, anxiety,\nstress and depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wrike.com\/blog\/what-happy-employees-actually-care-about\/\">Wrike<\/a>,\nalmost 60 percent of workers say they have taken a pay cut to accept a job that\nmade them happier. Workplace stress is exacting an unprecedented psychological\ntoll.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cary Cooper, professor of organisational psychology at\nManchester Business School, says of gimmicky perks that they quite often hinder\nworkplace well-being not support it \u2013 he points out in a BBC <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/worklife\/article\/20190215-three-trendy-workplace-perks-and-three-boring-ones-that-work\">report\non work-life<\/a>, that the free evening meals perk for those staying at work\nlate may be seen by an employer as supporting well-being, but it is merely\nreinforcing a long-hours culture which is actually damaging to health.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Well-being\nneeds a cultural shift<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Insights by global management consulting company McKinsey\ndetermine that job autonomy and social support are the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mckinsey.com\/business-functions\/organization\/our-insights\/the-overlooked-essentials-of-employee-well-being\">overlooked\nessentials of employee well-being<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alex Heaton, founder of health and wellness digital\nplatform, LiveSmart, said in an interview with <a href=\"https:\/\/realbusiness.co.uk\/sme-wellbeing-culture-shift\/\">Real Business<\/a>,\n<em>\u201cIf a business wants to embed healthy behaviours in the workplace, they need\nto change the culture.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heaton has introduced a number of initiatives that encourage\nstaff to strike a good work-life balance and believes well-being should come\nfrom the top. Heaton embodies the healthy behaviours he knows will benefit his\nstaff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/artemis.marketing\/\">Artemis Marketing<\/a> is\none of many companies trying to avoid useless perks and stick with simple,\nworkable solutions to support workplace well-being. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Managing Director of Artemis, Mike Knivett, says, <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe encourage staff to take\nregular walks outside to take a break from their screen. Our offices are based\non a farm in the beautiful Sussex countryside, it would be ludicrous not to\nensure our staff make the most of that.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEmployee well-being is an\nimportant part of our culture, not in a \u2018faddy perks\u2019 kind of way, but from a\nplace that we genuinely care about our people and want them to feel well, both\nout of and in the workplace.\u201d <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cWe do what we can to keep\nstress to a minimum. We think that simple things like restricting access to\nemails over the weekend is much more effective in reducing stress than putting\non a yoga class at lunch-time.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Feeling\nvalued and respected is fundamental to well-being<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the most basic human desires are to feel valued,\nappreciated and respected. According to a report in the <a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2018\/07\/do-your-employees-feel-respected\">Harvard\nBusiness Review<\/a> when you ask workers what matters most to them, feeling\nrespected by superiors often tops the list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEmployees who say they feel\nrespected are more satisfied with their jobs and more grateful for\u2014and loyal\nto\u2014their companies. They are more resilient, cooperate more with others,\nperform better and more creatively, and are more likely to take direction from\ntheir leaders. Conversely, a lack of respect can inflict real damage.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to MIND, a leading mental health charity in the\nUK, 1 in 6 workers is currently experiencing a mental health problem, such as\nstress, anxiety or depression.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a resource on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mind.org.uk\/media\/43247\/Resource1_Mentally_Healthy_workplacesFINAL_pdf.pdf\">mentally\nhealthy workplaces<\/a>, MIND say, <em>\u201cSmart employers know that organisations\nare only as strong as their people \u2013 they depend on having a healthy and\nproductive workforce.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>MIND point to the strong relationship between staff\nwell-being, motivation and business performance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>\u201cEngagement is about\nrecognising that employees, if they are to perform at their best, must be\nrespected, involved, heard, well-led and valued. Approaches such as flexible\nworking, building resilience and staff development contribute to good\nengagement.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Feeling valued and respected is fundamental to well-being,\nwhether we are in the workplace or not. Employee engagement and business\nsuccess cannot happen without a culture of trust and respect \u2013 a place where\npeople feel valued and can develop and contribute. Ignoring mental well-being\nat work is disrespectful and comes at a cost to employers in lost productivity,\nhigh staff turnover and absenteeism.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alas, many businesses are missing the key ingredient for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/4-principles-to-maximize-your-performance-and-wellbeing\/\">achieving successful workplace well-being<\/a>. It comes down to employees feeling respected and valued. Nothing motivates a person more than that. Feeling respected and valued is good for our mental health.
