The sky is clear, the sun warm. A soft breeze caresses your skin.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nYou can hear the cheerful sounds of your friends enjoying themselves, having the time of their lives on this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/5-ways-to-become-more-present-everyday\/\">perfect day<\/a>.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nYou are anticipating a long-needed, well-deserved break from the stresses of life!\r\n\r\n \r\n<h2>Suddenly, a police officer appears.<\/h2>\r\n<h2> <\/h2>\r\n\u201cDo <strong>NOT<\/strong> go out on that beach,\u201d his voice is quiet and ominous.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cHuh?\u201d You cannot help but stop in your tracks, although you don\u2019t see any evidence that what he says has any merit.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cI\u2019m not kidding. Stay off that beach. You can\u2019t go there. That would be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/top-5-tips-to-turn-mistakes-into-learning\/\">mistake<\/a>.\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cBut why?\u201d you reply. Other people are over there. My friends are calling me. They seem to be really enjoying themselves.\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cNo!\u201d he commands. \u201c<em>You are not allowed<\/em>.\u201d He looks as if he is about to haul you away.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cBut I haven\u2019t done anything wrong,\u201d you manage to mutter in confusion.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u201cDon\u2019t be so sure of yourself. You don\u2019t deserve to be out there having a good time like a normal person. I should cuff you right now! You\u2019re scum, and don\u2019t you forget it.\u201d\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<em>And there went your perfect day\u2026<\/em>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nWho is this mysterious officer bent on ruining your life? He is a symbol of your <strong>limiting beliefs.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n \r\n<h2><strong>What are limiting beliefs?<\/strong><\/h2>\r\nA belief is an experience of certainty. Beliefs are made of inner images, sounds and feelings. What you <a href=\"https:\/\/inlpcenter.org\/nlp-submodalities-courtney\/\">see, hear and feel on the inside<\/a> forms the belief. The belief, perhaps along with other beliefs, serves as an attitude or \u201clens\u201d through which you perceive the world.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nIf you were to perceive and respond to the world from the perspective of the police officer, you would experience the world in a very limited way. With the police officer\u2019s attitude streaming through your mind and body, your options and capacity to enjoy life disappears.\r\n\r\n \r\n<h2><strong>How to Discover Which Limiting Beliefs Affect You<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n<h2> <\/h2>\r\nHere are some steps that will help you discover which limiting beliefs hold you back from the success, peace, and enjoyment that you desire.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<strong>1. Choose a goal or direction in life.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nMake plans or set a goal. You need to determine a positive direction for yourself with a clear path forward. \u00a0This could be related to a new diet, career, a new business, or a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/thou-shalt-honor-thy-self-commitments\/\">commitment<\/a> of any kind. It doesn\u2019t have to be complicated. A goal such as, <em>I am going to exercise 30 minutes every weekday<\/em>, is perfectly clear.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<strong>2. Move forward, full steam ahead.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nDiscovering which limiting beliefs affect you is not a cerebral process. It is a mind-body experience. You learn a lot (if you pay attention) en route toward your goals. Once you get yourself moving down the path, then you\u2019ll get to discover which obstacles may be lurking there.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nSo, get moving. Go after what you want! Each day, exercise for 30 minutes!\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n<strong>3. Notice what happens next.<\/strong>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nWhen moving down the path toward what you want, one of two things will happen:\r\n\r\n \r\n<ol>\r\n \t<li>You will begin to experience success<\/li>\r\n \t<li>You will <a href=\"https:\/\/inlpcenter.org\/psychological-attachments\">sabotage your success<\/a>.<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n \r\n\r\nIf you succeed, keep going! Each day you exercise, celebrate (not with a box of Twinkies, I hope) and plan to continue.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nIf you sabotage yourself by unnecessarily skipping your exercise sessions, you have now encountered your first obstacle. It is critical to treat the sabotage as a learning experience about your limiting beliefs.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nAt this point, you must discover the <em>internal attitude <\/em>that drove you to sabotage your plan. In other words, you need to find the belief.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nRemember, beliefs are made of what you see, hear and feel on the inside. So, pay attention. In your moments of sabotage, what thoughts and feelings passed through your mind and body?\r\n<h2>Therein lies your limiting belief!<\/h2>\r\n<h2> <\/h2>\r\nLet\u2019s say that after a couple of days, you blow it by watching TV instead of exercising. As you made that choice, what thoughts or feelings were passing through your consciousness? Below are some common examples:\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u2022 An inner voice: <em>Ah who cares. I can\u2019t do this anyway.<\/em>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u2022 A feeling in the solar plexus that says: <em>I am not worth it.<\/em>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\n\u2022 An image of a critical parent looking down his nose at you as if to say: <em>You\u2019ll just screw it all up eventually anyway.<\/em>\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nThe key is to relax, slow down and take yourself off auto-pilot. As you pay attention to your inner experience, you will discover the message. Within the message is the belief that drove your self-sabotage.\r\n\r\n \r\n<h3><strong>What next?<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n \r\n\r\nNow you know that you harbor a specific, limiting belief that prevents you from accomplishing your goal. This will not necessarily solve the problem, but it is a critical first step.\r\n\r\n \r\n\r\nImagine showing up to a <a href=\"https:\/\/inlpcenter.org\/how-to-become-a-life-coach\/\">life coach<\/a> or and saying, \u201cI have a goal to exercise, but believe I am not worth the effort required to follow it.
