According to a study released by <u><a href=\"http:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/us\/en\/pages\/technology-media-and-telecommunications\/articles\/global-mobile-consumer-survey-us-edition.html\">Deloitte<\/a><\/u>, people between the ages of 18 and 24 check their phones an average of 74 times per day. The cell phone addiction is real, and it has been lowering our attention spans, making us more lonely, and increasing our chances of depression for as long as any of us can remember.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s just something oh-so-irresistible about that \u201cding!\u201d your phone makes when someone likes your Instagram photo. It almost makes the four and a half hours you wasted putting filters on your picture seem worth it. But is it really worth it?<\/p>\n<p>Our phones have replaced our calendars, our clocks, our calculators, and now, our lives. It seems hopeless to even attempt to break free from the drug that is your smartphone. Your time limit resets every 24 hours, but if you exceed it, <a href=\"https:\/\/play.google.com\/store\/apps\/details?id=com.curlybrace.ruchir.keepfocusneverprocrastinateagain\">\u201cFocus\u201d<\/a> will block your distractions. The app has personally saved me hundreds of cumulative hours. You can even take it a step further by enabling its extra features:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cStrict Mode\u201d allows you to prevent yourself from increasing your time limit without a passcode. (I find that this feature is also great for parents who want to limit their children\u2019s screen time with a password.)<\/li>\n<li>\u201cEncouraging Text\u201d allows you to send yourself personalized motivational reminders at different intervals of using a blocked app. It\u2019s just another way to get rid of your app addiction!<\/li>\n<li>\u201cTotal Block Mode\u201d lets you completely block every app on your phone for a specific amount of time. And if you don\u2019t own an Android phone, share the app with someone who does! But don\u2019t fret, even iPhone users can get over their phone addictions:<\/p>\n<ol start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>A usage journal (on paper or digitally)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>Create a usage journal. Just the mere act of writing down your app usage will help kill your phone addiction. The picture above is how I organize my phone addiction journal\u2014with three simple columns. Column one is the app that I\u2019ve opened, column two is the amount of time I\u2019ve spent on it, and column three is the date. Set reasonable goals for your daily usage, and decrease your time each time you set a goal.<\/p>\n<p><img class=\" wp-image-58669 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_20180719_160541736-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"319\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_20180719_160541736-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_20180719_160541736-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/IMG_20180719_160541736-460x345.jpg 460w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 319px) 100vw, 319px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>You might be able to do this faster digitally on your phone\u2019s notepad app, but I prefer a real journal since the purpose of this activity <em>is<\/em> to start using your phone less! As the weeks go by, compare your daily usage, and I guarantee you will have made progress!<\/p>\n<ol start=\"3\">\n<li><strong>Complete Deletion<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img class=\" wp-image-58670 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/delete-app-iphone-2.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"311\" height=\"172\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re really serious about destroying your app addiction, the best option is to simply delete your distracting apps. I did this with Instagram and it was one of the best decisions of my life:<\/p>\n<p>At first, it felt as if I had deleted a part of my soul; I had nothing to do when I was waiting for the bus or in the bathroom\u2014I was left with my own thoughts and nothing else. It felt empty. But after a week or so, I had freed up two-three hours <em>each day<\/em> to spend meditating, exercising, and working on new projects.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Your smartphone isn\u2019t <em>inherently<\/em> bad. In fact, it\u2019s a great tool to make plans with friends and family, maintain valuable connections, and even be productive. However, a smartphone addiction <em>is <\/em>inherently bad.
