Just wait and hope that society’s negative perceptions will change soon. History proves that every era—even our extrovert one—will eventually come to an end. It may be the introverts’ time to shine then. Sounds promising and easy, but frankly, this is not your best bet. Why? Well, think about it this way—it took the world 300 years to accept the fact that the Earth was round. It may be years before the collapse of the extrovert period.

So while waiting, perhaps a more reasonable step then is to engage in what scientists have been rigorously advising us of late—i.e. becoming, on the surface, “pretend extroverts.”[1] It’s a smart move really—in fact, it gives us a shot at beating extroverts at their own game. Darwin taught us a long time ago that the ones who are most adaptable to change are the survival species. It is not about changing who we are—it simply means embracing the social and networking skills often necessary to thrive in our environments.

Yet, there is still another less strenuous path to realization for an introvert with low confidence. Rather than spending time and energy to lead an introvert-extrovert double life, one can focus on improving their self-esteem instead.

As lack of confidence and introversion overlap in some behaviors, by working on enhancing the former, we can clear some of the unwanted “noise” of the latter—such as, shyness, aversion of attention, fear of public speaking and social anxiety.

Finally, while introversion and low self-esteem may share some common grounds, they are not reciprocal. Once again, we can’t and shouldn’t blame nature (our introversion) for our failing to nurture and love our characters (have healthy self-respect).

And this is important—because until the world is ready to accept us as equal to extroverts, a more advantageous strategy is to focus on building a maybe quiet but assertive confidence.

[1] A term that Susan Cain uses in her book.

Evelyn Marinoff is a writer and an aspiring author.
