While studies show that one in four Americans would like to, it\u2019s not always the easiest thing to do.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are scientific studies that back the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.simplyss.com\/blog\/25-ways-better-organize-life-2018\/\">benefits of being organized<\/a>, which makes it worth your while. First, we\u2019ll take a look at the causes and benefits, then show you how to implement them with easy hacks for organizing your home, work-life, family, meals, and social life. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why do we accumulate clutter?<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>It can (literally) hurts to throw things away:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It turns out that some people\u2019s brains are built to create clutter and it takes actual physical exertion to reduce it. It was literally hurting them to declutter. Also, clutter can be tied to identity and nostalgia. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You are thinking about storage all wrong:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to this <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/domesticatingmom.com\/decluttering-101-a-place-for-everything-everything-in-its-place\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, storage is not a place to put all your junk. Instead, it should be about the convenience of use. Something that you store should be easy to access when you need it, not piled underneath a lot of unrelated items. The article goes on to quote declutter guru Marie Kondo who says, \u201cClutter is caused by a failure to return things to where they belong. Therefore, storage should reduce the effort needed to put things away, not the effort needed to get them out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why be more organized? <\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Decluttering makes your brain work more effectively: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/unclutterer.com\/2011\/03\/29\/scientists-find-physical-clutter-negatively-affects-your-ability-to-focus-process-information\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Princeton University discovered that an abundance of items around you makes it more difficult for you to focus. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Organization can be better for your children:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/ns.umich.edu\/new\/releases\/3865-clean-homes-can-boost-children-s-adult-education-and-earnings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that children from more organized households tend to perform more effectively in school and excel in future careers. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Planning helps you reach fitness goals:\u00a0<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If you plan out your activity, you will are more likely to achieve your fitness goals. Planning meals means you are less likely to reach for unhealthy foods out of desperation.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>You sleep better in a clean environment:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A National Sleep Foundation <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sleepfoundation.org\/sites\/default\/files\/bedroompoll\/NSF_Bedroom_Poll_Report.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that a more organized bedroom means an improved night of sleep. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is useful to look at organization from a multi-layered perspective. The three major elements to consider are organization of items, organization of time, and digital organization. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wrangle your physical items:<\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Everything in its place: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Designate spaces around your home for certain things and keep them organized. For example, you can organize your junk drawer, the shoes in your closet, or your desk at work. You can hide visible cables by tying them together with zip ties and labeling them with bread tags! Another great hack? Putting velcro on the back of remotes and game controllers to easily store them in the same place every time.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Keep papers organized:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the best things you can do is invest in a paper protocol. Keep papers neatly nestled in \u201cretain\u201d, \u201carchive\u201d and \u201ctoss\u201d piles. You\u2019ll be amazed at how much paper you really don\u2019t need, and you\u2019ll know exactly where the paper you do need is!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Know when to store it:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A good rule of thumb is, if you haven\u2019t looked at it in six months (and it\u2019s not seasonal), go ahead and store it out of sight or toss it. You can also store creatively&#8211;like storing stuffed animals in a bean bag cover so that it doubles as a comfy seat!<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Improve your organization of time: <\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Plan your meals:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking the time to plan meals for the week saves time (and money) and also leads to better diet choices. Use Sunday evening to plan for the week. Write down the meals on a sheet of paper and write it on a dry erase board in your pantry. You can cook several proteins at a time by using the same pan separated with foil, or cook large amounts of food in a crockpot. You can also pack ahead smaller portions of snacks for grab-and-go convenience.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Prepare your clothes:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking the time to plan your clothing for the next day or even the next week will save you time in the morning. Particularly, planning your children\u2019s outfits will give them a sense of structure and save loads of time in the mornings. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Create a \u201cFamily Command Center\u201d:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is an area where family members can store their keys, shoes, calendar, leave notes for each other, or grab their lunch in the morning. Knowing exactly where to look when you need these items can be super handy!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Plan time for loved ones:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Plan to talk to family members who don\u2019t live near you at the same time each week, that way you will always have a \u201ccatch up\u201d date scheduled. If you\u2019re finding it difficult to make time for your friends, schedule a quick lunch date during the work day, during the time you would have spent eating anyway! <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organization your digital space: <\/span><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong> Clean your inbox:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are a digital hoarder it\u2019s time to get to the bottom of it. Take 20 minutes every day to clean your inbox, and that also means unsubscribing from unwanted emails. <\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Purge your social media: <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear out your social space of brands or people you no longer wish to follow, friends you\u2019ve lost touch with or photos you don\u2019t like. You would be surprised how much a digital house cleaning can liberate you!<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Digitize whenever possible:<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take some time to scan important documents so that you can go as paperless as possible. Try to send communication, memos and important documents digitally.
