On each day of the week, he would give himself a crossmark for the virtues he failed to practice.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\"><em>\u201cI might mark, by a little black spot, every fault I found upon examination to have been committed respecting that virtue upon that day.\u201d \u2014 Benjamin Franklin.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p\" style=\"text-align: left\"><strong>Benjamin\u2019s 13 Virtues:<\/strong> Temperance. Silence. Order. Resolution. Frugality. Industry. Sincerity. Justice. Moderation. Cleanliness. Tranquility. Chastity. Humility.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"89e7\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">Build Your Internal\u00a0Compass<\/h3>\n<p id=\"c8e7\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">This checkmark system alone wasn\u2019t enough for Benjamin.<\/p>\n<p id=\"1fe1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Each morning, he would ask himself\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201cWhat good shall I do this day?\u201d<\/em>\u00a0before he wrote a short journal as he jotted down his ideas. Each evening, he would reflect on his day with this single question:\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201cWhat good have I done today?\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">\u201cThe quality of your life comes down to the quality of the questions you ask yourself on a daily basis.\u201d<em class=\"markup--em markup--blockquote-em\"> \u2014 Tony Robbins.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>His check-mark system, alongside his morning and evening questions &#8211; served to steer his life in a far more focused direction. It made him\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">continually think about ideas he could implement each day to practice goodness<\/strong>, both for his benefit and the benefit of those around him.<\/p>\n<p>His three daily habits, gave him\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">an internal compass<\/strong>\u00a0from which to measure his life\u2019s success. His systems not only affected his daily actions but they also positively influenced his thought patterns each day.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-style: italic\">\u201cThe outer conditions of a person\u2019s life will always be found to be harmoniously related to his inner state\u2026Men do not attract that which they want, but that which they are.\u201d \u2015\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--blockquote-anchor\" style=\"font-style: italic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/author\/show\/8446.James_Allen\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">James Allen<\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-style: italic\">,\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--blockquote-anchor\" style=\"font-style: italic\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/work\/quotes\/1840987\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--blockquote-strong\">As a Man Thinketh<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p id=\"6a1e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--blockquote\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">All the plaudits he received in his lifetime were secondary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"3958\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">In the end, his success wasn\u2019t determined by others.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"b46c\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">It was determined by his own standards.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id=\"990c\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">His Circumstances Didn\u2019t Determine His\u00a0Success<\/h3>\n<p id=\"62fc\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Benjamin Franklin only had two years of education during his youth. He was the 15th child of seventeen children from a poor family background. He ran away from his family at the age of 17 after being violently beaten for writing under a pseudo-name in his brother\u2019s newspaper.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f6cf\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Yet he found a way to move away from any sort of mental victim mentality.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f29b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Life\u2019s storms, in his case, created more resilient roots.<\/p>\n<p id=\"22c9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Benjamin Franklin didn\u2019t measure his success or failure through extrinsic rewards or his past experiences\u2014 he forged a deep internal locus of control which he then extrapolated into his three daily habits.<\/p>\n<p id=\"f846\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Are you operating based on external standards, or internal standards dictated by yourself?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"c4f0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">In my life, just like everyone else, I\u2019ve had my fair share of storms. From growing up with a violent stepfather, to being homeless, and being forced to move country at the age of eight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"b7c4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">But pain is never an excuse for mediocrity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"04c8\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">It wasn\u2019t an excuse for Benjamin, and it shouldn\u2019t be for you.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">\u201cPeople with an internal locus of control believe that they are responsible for (or at least can influence) their own fates and life outcomes. They may or may not feel they are leaders, but they feel that they are essentially in charge of their lives.\u201d \u2014 Daniel J Letivin.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"aa66\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--blockquote\">Did Benjamin Franklin\u2019s Daily Habit System Help Him Live a Meaningful Life?<\/h3>\n<p id=\"6898\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">In his\u00a0<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Autobiography-Benjamin-Franklin-Thrift-Editions\/dp\/0486290735\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">autobiography<\/a>, Franklin wrote that through his daily habits, he never\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201carrived at the perfection he had been so ambitious of obtaining, but fell far short of it.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p id=\"83d6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Yet, he admits his attempts made him a happier and far more productive man than he would otherwise have been. While he may have not reached a state of perfection, he did indeed live a life of true excellence.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0ad4\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">The truth is, our lives will never be \u201cperfect\u201d. But the more relentlessly we move towards that \u201cperfection\u201d in our habits and character, the more our lives will reflect everything we\u2019re yearning for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">\u201cMen are anxious to improve their circumstances, but are unwilling to improve themselves.\u201d \u2014 James Allen<\/p>\n<h4 id=\"da82\" class=\"graf graf--h4 graf-after--blockquote\">Just Some of Benjamin Franklin\u2019s Accomplishments Include:<\/h4>\n<ol class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"004d\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--h4\">Inventing bifocal lenses that allow people with presbyopia to see in the distance through the upper half of the lens, and read through the lower half.<\/li>\n<li id=\"9c54\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Creating lightning rods which protects millions of buildings from the hazardous effects of lightning strikes.<\/li>\n<li id=\"70a8\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Founding the University of Pennsylvania and the American Philosophical Society, which have both positively influenced thousands of students lives and shaped America\u2019s cultural landscape.<\/li>\n<li id=\"6e0d\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Publishing Richard\u2019s Almanac, which contained the calendar, poems, sayings and astronomical and astrological information which pioneered the way information was presented in many books thereafter.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"7a71\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">None of those accomplishments would have been possible had he not focused on living each day that was offered to him, with the utmost focus.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4468\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">And one of his secret weapons was his\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">daily habits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">\u201cThe Secret of your future is hidden in your daily routine.\u201d \u2014 Mike Murdock<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"9e7b\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--blockquote\">Look Inside Yourself for Your Sense of Self-Worth<\/h3>\n<p id=\"3ee6\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">The moment we begin to look outside ourselves for our measures of success, the more we run the likelihood of feeling like failures.\u00a0<strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">And it\u2019s also the moment we limit our potential success.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"f7a0\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">We\u2019re all living within the confines of our own orchestrated reality.<\/span>\u00a0The moment you think someone is better or inferior then you, you limit your thinking \u2014 according to research in<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u00a0Nany Kline\u2019s book\u00a0<\/em><a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/book\/show\/1020273.Time_to_Think\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">Time to Think<\/em><\/a>. And when you judge someone\u2019s accomplishments in relation to yours, you perpetuate an illusion that\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">masks your real self-worth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p id=\"d0eb\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Unless you\u2019ve built your own internal measures of success, then you will always run the risk of comparing yourself to others. And that\u2019s dangerous \u2014 you can end up risking your sense of self-esteem and unique individuality for some external standard \u201cyou\u2019re supposed to meet\u201d.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"1bf2\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">You\u2019re not supposed to meet anyone\u2019s standard.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"80d3\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">You\u2019re only supposed to be inspired by other people\u2019s example.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li id=\"4e67\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--li-strong\">It\u2019s up to you to create\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--li-em\">your own standards<\/em>.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span class=\"markup--quote markup--blockquote-quote is-other\">\u201cComparing yourself to others is an act of violence against your authentic self.\u201d ~ Iyanla Vanzant<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3 id=\"e495\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--blockquote\">Build a System of Accountability for Your Daily\u00a0Habits<\/h3>\n<p id=\"098b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--h3\">Between 1707 and 1770, Benjamin Franklin lived a life of purpose, character, and excellence. While you can take great lessons from his daily habits, the reality is that your systems need to take into account your uniqueness and the times we live in.<\/p>\n<p id=\"0568\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">A digital approach to tracking your habits, on a phone app or on your computer can be just as effective. You can build upon Benjamin\u2019s ideas and refine them to suit.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c12e\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">If you want to cultivate the practice of tracking your daily habits, then you don\u2019t have to necessarily track thirteen qualities and ask yourself a question every morning and night.<\/p>\n<p id=\"314b\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\"><strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\">Experiment<\/strong>, and discover what works for you.<\/p>\n<p id=\"4590\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">In the end, the most effective system, is the one that you can stick to.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"19f2\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">My Daily Habits\u00a0System<\/h3>\n<figure id=\"dc1f\" class=\"graf graf--figure graf-after--h3\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder is-locked\">\n<div class=\"aspectRatioPlaceholder-fill\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"progressiveMedia js-progressiveMedia graf-image is-canvasLoaded is-imageLoaded\"><img class=\"progressiveMedia-image js-progressiveMedia-image\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn-images-1.medium.com\/max\/1000\/1*_qgQuXL2bkV7KpfNdPNRgA.png\" width=\"503\" height=\"406\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p id=\"b145\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--figure\"><span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">Differently to Benjamin Franklin, I track the actions that lend themselves to the state and emotion I want to experience each day.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"916f\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">In Eric Barker\u2019s book\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u2018Barking Up the Wrong Tree: The Surprising Science Behind Why Everything You Know About Success Is (Mostly) Wrong\u201d\u00a0<\/em>the author cites that\u00a0<span class=\"markup--quote markup--p-quote is-other\">the more we can\u00a0<em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">\u201cgamify\u201d<\/em>\u00a0our lives, the likelier we\u2019ll stick to our disciplines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"a4f9\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">At the end of each week, I have a call with a friend (who also tracks her habits) to share how it all went \u2014 just to make this practice of discipline a little more playful.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1c9a\" class=\"graf graf--h3 graf-after--p\">Potential Areas to Track in Your\u00a0Life<\/h3>\n<ul class=\"postList\">\n<li id=\"58ca\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--h3\">Your Finances<\/li>\n<li id=\"c2f3\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Your Health (How many workouts are you doing per week and month)<\/li>\n<li id=\"ac0c\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Your Knowledge (Which books are you reading, which conferences are you going to?)<\/li>\n<li id=\"c5f4\" class=\"graf graf--li graf-after--li\">Your Highlights of the Month (Gratitude)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"6aa1\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--li\">By measuring your progress in the important areas of your life, you will always be proactively comparing yourself to who you were yesterday, and to no one else.<\/p>\n<p id=\"c445\" class=\"graf graf--p graf-after--p\">Life isn\u2019t designed to give us what we need, it\u2019s designed to give us what we earn.
