{"id":50341,"date":"2017-06-28T21:45:02","date_gmt":"2017-06-29T05:45:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=50341"},"modified":"2017-09-12T14:13:09","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T22:13:09","slug":"my-week-long-experiment-and-the-benefits-to-my-mind-and-body","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/my-week-long-experiment-and-the-benefits-to-my-mind-and-body\/","title":{"rendered":"My Week Long Experiment and the Benefits to my Mind and Body"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><\/p>\n<p>In almost all health and well-being articles I\u2019ve ever read, there\u2019s always one tip that reoccurs every time.\u00a0 It\u2019s the simplest of things, the easiest advice to follow, and I\u2019m just surprised that more people don\u2019t do it.\u00a0 It\u2019s not rocket science, it\u2019s not expensive (in fact, it\u2019s pretty much free) and is available to us all. Drink water.<\/p>\n<p>I know, I know!\u00a0 It can be the most boring thing you can think of when it comes to thirst. First thing in the morning when I\u2019m still on autopilot, I\u2019ve usually made and drunk a large cup of strong coffee before I\u2019m properly awake \u2013 I need that rocket fuel to get me going!\u00a0 But with the warmer weather now upon us, I can have a tendency to feel sluggish, for my feet and ankles to swell when I sit at my office desk for too long, and to suffer with far more headaches than is really acceptable. Talking to my colleagues (who all sit with a sports bottle filled with water on their desks) they all told me I should drink more water. \u00a0I could still have the coffee, but I should add drinks of water in-between coffees, or replace one or two of those coffees throughout the day.<\/p>\n<p>Biting the bullet, I decided to conduct a little experiment of my own.\u00a0 It couldn\u2019t hurt, could it?\u00a0 A week out of my life?\u00a0 I pledged to my work colleagues, that for one week, I would drink nothing but water, document my findings as I went, and then give them an honest account of my well-being at the end of the week.\u00a0 Here\u2019s how I got on\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Day 1<\/p>\n<p>I had to try really hard not to make that coffee.\u00a0 I really needed coffee.\u00a0 BUT\u2026 I had hot water instead &#8211; a little compromise in my mind, as I\u2019m used to having a hot drink.\u00a0 I won\u2019t lie, it certainly didn\u2019t hit the spot like my usual coffee does.\u00a0 Throughout the day I consumed the recommended amount.\u00a0 By the end of day one, I\u2019d drunk over 2 litres!<\/p>\n<p>Day 2<\/p>\n<p>Still craving that early morning coffee!\u00a0 It was a little more difficult during the day, because I work part time, and this was one of my home days.\u00a0 I was busy with chores, and so I fell slightly short of the two litres, but I didn\u2019t count it as failure.\u00a0 If anything the opposite \u2013 I\u2019d done 2 whole days without coffee!<\/p>\n<p>Day 3<\/p>\n<p>Woke with a thumping headache!\u00a0 I put this down to a little caffeine withdrawal. I persevered with the hot water, instead opting to add a little lemon juice. By the end of day 3 I had consumed over 2.5 litres of water! Go me!<\/p>\n<p>Day 4<\/p>\n<p>The temptation of coffee was still there, but I didn\u2019t feel like I \u2018needed\u2019 it in the same way as a couple of days before.\u00a0 Drinking water was almost becoming a habit.\u00a0 At home I made sure that I set myself little reminders to drink by programming my phone\u2019s alarm to go off every hour, on the hour.\u00a0 By the end of day 4 I\u2019d consumed another 2.5 litres.\u00a0 I noticed too that my visits to the bathroom were far more frequent than the days before.\u00a0 My system really was flushing through!<\/p>\n<p>Day 5<\/p>\n<p>I tend to work all day on a Friday, which means I\u2019m sat on my bottom from 9-5!\u00a0 I made sure I drank plenty, and got up and moved about at least once every hour.\u00a0 Leaving the office, I was surprised that my feet were normal size, and that only one of my ankles were ever so slightly puffy.\u00a0 What a difference!\u00a0 Toilet visits were more frequent, but I started to <em>feel<\/em> physically better.\u00a0 I was getting to sleep earlier, which in turn made me feel brighter in the morning.<\/p>\n<p>Day 6<\/p>\n<p>A Saturday.\u00a0 Fail!\u00a0 Not only did I not consume my target 2 litres, but I also went off plan.\u00a0 I was out for the day, and didn\u2019t prepare adequately.\u00a0 The craving for something sweet and fizzy got the better of me and I gave in to it and had a lemonade.\u00a0 Still, once home I stuck to my liquid plan, and got straight back on to water. At least lemonade is a clear liquid, right?<\/p>\n<p>Day 7<\/p>\n<p>Mission complete!\u00a0 Target consumption met! \u00a0I could really see a difference in my overall well-being.\u00a0 I still peed for England, and not only did I notice a difference in my bladder behaviour, but also my bowels.\u00a0 Things were \u2018easier\u2019.\u00a0 My headaches became almost non-existent, and I was actually feeling like I had a bit of energy!\u00a0 My mind-set was more positive, and on the whole, I couldn\u2019t believe how good I was feeling!<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve added a day 8 because I just had to share this amazing benefit with you\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Day 8<\/p>\n<p>The day I stepped on the scales.\u00a0 Perhaps drinking more water had suppressed my appetite a little as I am 3.5lbs lighter! I put it down to water being calorie free!\u00a0 Whatever the answer, I know that from now on I\u2019ll be carrying on with the water drinking.\u00a0 It\u2019s not permanently sustainable, as I like a social drink now and again, and I will allow myself the odd coffee \u2013 just not to the same extent as before.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p><em>Jane works part time, and is also a freelance writer and blogger, who currently writes for <a href=\"http:\/\/cooleraid.co.uk\/\">Cooleraid<\/a>.
