{"id":49372,"date":"2017-05-09T19:34:47","date_gmt":"2017-05-10T03:34:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=49372"},"modified":"2017-09-12T14:14:34","modified_gmt":"2017-09-12T22:14:34","slug":"the-enemies-of-sleep-avoid-these-5-foods-to-sleep-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/the-enemies-of-sleep-avoid-these-5-foods-to-sleep-better\/","title":{"rendered":"The Enemies of Sleep &#8211; Avoid These 5 Foods to Sleep Better"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Can&#8217;t capture that elusive eight hours of sleep? \u00a0Waking up in the middle of the night restless? \u00a0It may be what you&#8217;re eating during the day that is stopping you from getting the rest you need. \u00a0Here are seven things that may be robbing you of the sleep you need. <\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Caffeine.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0This may be a no-brainer, but many are surprised by how soon they should stop drinking caffeinated beverages. \u00a0It is suggested that you stop after lunch if you want to get a good night&#8217;s rest. \u00a0Keep in mind that foods like chocolate also contain caffeine.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>High-Fat Foods.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0These have been linked to poor quality of sleep. Fat triggers the buildup of stomach acids that, when lying down, can cause uncomfortable acid reflux. A high-fat diet also interferes with the production of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC1279673\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">orexin, one of the neurotransmitters that helps regulate your sleep\/wake cycle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> along with melatonin.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Water.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> \u00a0If you want to avoid middle-of-the night bathroom trips, it is good to refrain from drinking too much water late at night. \u00a0Keep in mind that some foods like watermelon, tea, parsley, and even decaffeinated coffee contain diuretics that push more water through your system as well.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Alcohol.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Alcohol may help you to fall asleep faster, but you are most likely to wake in the middle of the night, unable to go back to sleep. \u00a0It also interferes with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/lib\/the-importance-of-rem-sleep-dreaming\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">REM sleep<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, the restorative part of the sleep cycle. \u00a0This can cause you to wake up feeling as if you haven&#8217;t rested at all. \u00a0Aim for one glass of wine with dinner several hours before you go to bed. \u00a0Moderation will save your sleep quality.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><b>Spicy Foods.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> Some like it hot <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u2013<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> but it isn&#8217;t good for sleep. \u00a0Spicy foods eaten close to bedtime are a surefire way to suffer from heartburn when you lie down. \u00a0Stomach acids can creep up into the esophagus when you are in a prone position, which can lead to quite a lot of discomfort during sleep. \u00a0If you like spicy food, eat it for lunch so your stomach has time to settle.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">If you have avoided all these on my list and are still struggling to get a good night&#8217;s sleep, it may be time to look at what you are sleeping on. \u00a0Sometimes simply upgrading your mattress (say, adding a Tempur-Pedic topper) or <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.mattressfirm.com\/mattress-tips\/reasons-replace-mattress-every-8-years\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">getting a new one when your mattress is old<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will help a lot. \u00a0If you have tried everything, you may be suffering from a sleep disorder. \u00a0Contact your local sleep clinic for a possible sleep study. \u00a0Sleep is crucial to our well-being, and sometimes professional help may be needed.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Can&#8217;t capture that elusive eight hours of sleep? \u00a0Waking up in the middle of the night restless? \u00a0It may be what you&#8217;re eating during the day that is stopping you from getting the rest you need. \u00a0Here are seven things &hellip; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/the-enemies-of-sleep-avoid-these-5-foods-to-sleep-better\/\">Continue reading <span class=\"meta-nav\">&rarr;<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":12239,"featured_media":49379,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_monsterinsights_skip_tracking":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_active":false,"_monsterinsights_sitenote_note":"","_monsterinsights_sitenote_category":0},"categories":[1],"tags":[5951,4924,5952,66,4629,136,4360],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v19.1 - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>The Enemies of Sleep - Avoid These 5 Foods to Sleep Better<\/title>\n<meta name=\"description\" content=\"Can&#039;t capture that elusive eight hours of sleep?
