{"id":39021,"date":"2016-02-26T11:54:13","date_gmt":"2016-02-26T19:54:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=39021"},"modified":"2019-03-02T15:53:30","modified_gmt":"2019-03-02T23:53:30","slug":"dirty-truth-behind-finding-passion-meaning-purpose-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/dirty-truth-behind-finding-passion-meaning-purpose-life\/","title":{"rendered":"The Dirty Truth Behind Finding Passion, Meaning, and Purpose In your Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><\/p>\n<p>Generic self-improvement advice sucks.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFollow your passion\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cFind what\u2019s meaningful to you&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cDiscover your purpose\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>I mean it\u2019s got all the right components, it&#8217;s just backwards in its approach.<\/p>\n<p>Like the big corporations of the world take essential life resources\u2014water, fresh vegetables, green spaces\u2014generic self-improvement advice too takes essential components of living and puts labels on them, makes them sexy, and turns what was once had in abundance, into scarcity.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It puts passion at a distance from the everyday<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It places meaning on a pedestal<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It champions purpose as holy and absolute<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>It is a sexy idea, but it robs us of the truth.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Generic Self-Improvement Advice Loves Your Circle of Comfort Nearly As Much As You Do<\/h2>\n<p>Generic turn-your-life-around advice usually gets underway with one of the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Making a list of what you love doing<\/li>\n<li>Asking others what you\u2019re really good at<\/li>\n<li>Asking yourself questions like, \u201cIf I knew I was going to die soon, what would I do?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>We love this\u2014especially the list making part. It\u2019s comfortable and arousing to explore a greater life and an upgraded version of ourselves, without ever having to leave our cubicle or couch or change our behavior.<\/p>\n<p>You see, our bodies and minds love stability. They\u2019re used to following certain routines and patterns and not standing out from the crowd. It&#8217;s part of survival. So if we left it up to them, change would be forever confined to the risk-free world of our imaginations.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s definitely a comfortable idea, but it robs us from the truth.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Generic Self-Improvement Advice Looks For Answers To The Wrong Questions<\/h2>\n<p>As you may have figured, the truth is often not very sexy or comfortable. And something which isn&#8217;t very sexy or comfortable is always going to be a tough sell.<\/p>\n<p>So generic self-improvement advice continues to suck. And the truth sits in the shadows patiently waiting for anyone who makes the effort to go and find it.<\/p>\n<p>Those who do, discover:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Passion is not limited to one endeavor.<\/strong> Real passion is a strong and barely controllable emotion which should be let free in every part of life.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Meaning can be found in anything.<\/strong> From suffering and doing the chores, to playing Tetris and curing cancer\u2014meaning is everywhere.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Purpose is a trait that defines a life of quality.<\/strong> I visited my grandma with the same level of purpose in which I wrote this article. I wrote this article with the same level of purpose in which I completed my university dissertation.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t be bummed out that there\u2019s no one special path to follow or big dream to chase.<\/p>\n<p>The reality is, any direction your life goes down can be just as bright and meaningful as the next.<\/p>\n<p>So whenever you hear, \u201cWhat\u2019s your purpose in life?\u201d or \u201cWhat\u2019s your passion?\u201d, and you look up with a blank face, remember, <strong>the real truth seeker is not a person who gives the right answers, but one who asks the right questions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAlbert grunted. &#8220;Do you know what happens to lads who ask too many questions?&#8221;<br \/>\nMort thought for a moment.<br \/>\n&#8220;No,&#8221; he said eventually, &#8220;what?&#8221;<br \/>\nThere was silence.<br \/>\nThen Albert straightened up and said, &#8220;Damned if I know. Probably they get answers, and serve &#8217;em right.\u201d<br \/>\n\u2014Terry Pratchett, Mort<\/p>\n<p>Push aside all the sexy advice and ideas, tear away from the comfortable and familiar routines, and uncover the truth that lurks underneath.<\/p>\n<p>It won&#8217;t be easy. In fact it&#8217;ll be painful and probably terrifying. Real truth doesn&#8217;t exist in the comfort of the generic and the everyday\u2014that&#8217;s why so few manage to find it.
