{"id":38561,"date":"2016-02-02T20:45:36","date_gmt":"2016-02-03T04:45:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=38561"},"modified":"2016-02-04T14:11:12","modified_gmt":"2016-02-04T22:11:12","slug":"dispel-irrational-thoughts-5-steps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/dispel-irrational-thoughts-5-steps\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Dispel Irrational Thoughts In 5 Steps"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p>Irrational thoughts are thoughts that hold no truth and add no value to yourself.\u00a0 They are debilitating and can ruin self-esteem.\u00a0 Irrational thoughts can creep into your head without you realizing it and make you feel bad about yourself.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What are some examples?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou should be working harder.\u00a0 You\u2019re lazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you would have done that better this wouldn\u2019t have happened to you\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou got a C?\u00a0 Seriously?\u00a0 You\u2019re a failure.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Albert Ellis\u2019s ABCDE Model of Dispelling Rational Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A<\/strong>ctivating event<\/p>\n<p>Every irrational thought stems from something.\u00a0 A perfectionistic irrational thought can stem from having parents who put a lot of pressure on you, or a boss that puts pressure on you.\u00a0 Being in that environment can cause activating events that trigger irrational thoughts.\u00a0 Maybe you didn\u2019t get a promotion you wanted.\u00a0 That would be an activating event and because you have pressure on yourself, thoughts about that promotion start to creep in.<\/p>\n<p><strong>B<\/strong>eliefs<\/p>\n<p>You didn\u2019t get the promotion.\u00a0 What are your beliefs behind not getting the promotion?\u00a0 What do you rationally think about it and what are some random thoughts that come to your head about that event?\u00a0 Some irrational thoughts that could come in are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion, I am a failure.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion, my boss doesn\u2019t like me.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou are such an idiot, if you would have turned in that report on time last quarter you would have been promoted\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cYou shouldn\u2019t even work hard now because you have already failed.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cThere is no way I shouldn\u2019t have gotten that promotion. My boss is out to get me.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>If these are your beliefs and if you can\u2019t <a href=\"http:\/\/www.slownotion.com\/old-school\/what-does-seeing-things-as-they-are-mean\/\">see a situation for what it really is<\/a>, you will have consequences.<\/p>\n<p><strong>C<\/strong>onsequences<\/p>\n<p>If you continue to think the way that you think, consequences will occur.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t dispel irrational thoughts you will be taken over.\u00a0 Obviously this doesn\u2019t happen very often, but in extreme cases, irrational thoughts can convince people they are failures and can even lead to suicidal thoughts.\u00a0 People with the most severe cases of depression have to treat irrational thoughts or it can lead to suicide.\u00a0 So, for the example above, if you didn\u2019t get the promotion and continue to think the above thoughts, what could be some consequences?\u00a0 You could start to work less and less.\u00a0 You could develop harsh feelings that shouldn\u2019t exist towards your boss.\u00a0 You could start to feel like a failure.\u00a0 You could start to have less confidence in your work environment and you could start to worry more.\u00a0 If you don\u2019t dispel these thoughts you will create a self-fulfilling prophecy that drags you down.<\/p>\n<p><strong>D<\/strong>ispute<\/p>\n<p>Dispute the irrational thoughts.\u00a0 Once you recognize that you have an irrational thought you have to challenge the thought.\u00a0 Recognize that you don\u2019t have to feel the way that you do about the circumstance and don\u2019t beat yourself up about the activating event.<\/p>\n<p><strong>E<\/strong>xchange<\/p>\n<p>Exchange the irrational thoughts with rational thoughts.\u00a0 If you didn\u2019t get the promotion, come up with some rational thoughts as to why that might be.\u00a0 Here are some examples:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion, maybe someone else actually deserved or needed it more than I do\u201d.<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion, I\u2019m disappointed that it didn\u2019t happen but I know that I can get the next one if I don\u2019t get upset about this and begin to work even harder.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion, maybe my boss thinks I am doing the best work in my current position and he wants me to keep plugging away. Maybe he\u2019s going to raise my salary.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>\u201cI didn\u2019t get the promotion but that doesn\u2019t mean I am a failure.
