{"id":37543,"date":"2015-12-21T21:21:00","date_gmt":"2015-12-22T05:21:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=37543"},"modified":"2015-12-27T10:01:04","modified_gmt":"2015-12-27T18:01:04","slug":"7-reasons-rejected-improves-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/7-reasons-rejected-improves-life\/","title":{"rendered":"7 Reasons Being Rejected Improves Your Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I grew up in a community where going to college is a dream instead of an expectation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through hard work and luck, I completed my dream of<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/two-questions-that-guided-my-journey-from-poverty-to-yale\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">graduating college debt-free<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last May.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>It took me 283 rejections to get there.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From January 2009 to May 2011, I applied for more than 300 scholarships. Each Friday, I would walk to my mailbox, mail off two new application packets, and walk back in my house with a handful of rejections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was rejected for multiple reasons: my test scores weren\u2019t high enough; my essays weren\u2019t compelling enough; my stories weren\u2019t interesting enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But each week I continued to send more applications until enough people said \u201cCongratulations\u201d and I had enough scholarship money to attend any university and graduate debt-free. At Yale University, that meant leaving without a $250,000 bill.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If I were to start over again, I would gladly take another 283 rejections.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rejection teaches you how to be successful and in the process, improves your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you are rejected<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>1. You realize you\u2019re still alive<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you go after what you want be it a person, a job, or a scholarship, you realize that the worst thing that could happen is someone tells you \u201cno\u201d. Yes, there is a painful feeling afterwards, but you didn\u2019t die.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>2.\u00a0You don\u2019t have regret<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rejection comes as a potential outcome of going after what you want. The alternative was to not go after what you wanted. Had you not gone after what you wanted, you would have only regrets. The pain of rejection lasts temporarily; the pain of regret lasts forever.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>3. You separate yourself from other people<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is tough to ask for what you want; so most people don\u2019t. By just taking action, you already moved closer to your goal than others could ever dream to be. Fear of rejection isn\u2019t meant to stop you, it is meant to stop everyone else who didn\u2019t want what you want badly enough.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>4. You become a better person<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With every rejection, you begin to evaluate the reason for your rejection. Every piece of feedback you receive only helps you to become better and increase your odds of succeeding next time. As your number of rejection increases, so does your number of successes.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>5. You feel more motivated<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is nothing like being told you couldn\u2019t do something that motivates you to want to prove your doubters wrong. Learn to use your rejection as fuel and you\u2019ll never run out of energy.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>6. You grow tougher skin<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first rejection is tough; the second is easier. You\u2019re already caught in the storm, what is a little more rain?<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>7. You appreciate what is going right in your life<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get hit with enough rejections to line your bedroom walls, you learn to appreciate those people who had given you an opportunity, those who supported you, and those who believed in you. We spend so much time thinking about what we isn\u2019t going right in our lives, that we forget about all the beautiful things that are going right. Rejection gently reminds us of all the great things and people in our lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our successes allow us to achieve the things we want to achieve. Instead of chasing after success, we should become the type of person that success is attracted to. Rejection teaches us how to be that person. If you\u2019re not willing to risk rejection than you\u2019re not willing to accept success.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8212;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davis (<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.twitter.com\/IamDavisNguyen\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">@IamDavisNguyen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> grew up living on food stamps and welfare.
