Take Strategic Breaks<\/h3>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">Sleep deprivation is a big deal, and even a norm in our society.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">A recent Harvard study estimated that sleep deprivation costs American companies $63.2 billion a year in lost productivity. When we\u2019re working at high intensity for more than 90 minutes, we begin to rely on <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stress_hormone\">stress hormones\u200a<\/a>\u2014\u200aadrenalin, noradrenalin and cortisol\u200a\u2014\u200ato keep us going. \u00a0In the process, we move from <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Autonomic_nervous_system#Parasympathetic_nervous_system\">parasympathetic <\/a>to a<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fight-or-flight_response\">sympathetic arousal\u200a<\/a>\u2014\u200aa physiological state more commonly known as \u201c<a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.thebodysoulconnection.com\/EducationCenter\/fight.html\">fight or flight<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">This doesn\u2019t have to mean sleeping 10 hours a day, instead of your normal 8.<br \/>\nBy taking strategic naps during the day, you can revitalize your mind and give your brain the rest it needs to increase productivity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">When night shift air traffic controllers were given 40 minutes to nap\u200a\u2014\u200aand slept <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1111\/j.1365-2869.2008.00702.x\/full\">an average of 19 minutes<\/a>\u200a\u2014\u200athey performed higher on tests that measured vigilance and reaction time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">Longer naps have an even more profound impact than shorter ones. <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/psych.ucr.edu\/faculty\/mednick\/index.html\">Sara C. Mednick<\/a>, a sleep researcher at the University of California, Riverside, found that a 60 to 90-minute nap <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/visionlab.harvard.edu\/Members\/Ken\/Ken{54c12dad2cc2b53ae830e39915b1a3e70288dbcbbeb8bbf8395437c5dc3c512c}20papers{54c12dad2cc2b53ae830e39915b1a3e70288dbcbbeb8bbf8395437c5dc3c512c}20for{54c12dad2cc2b53ae830e39915b1a3e70288dbcbbeb8bbf8395437c5dc3c512c}20web{54c12dad2cc2b53ae830e39915b1a3e70288dbcbbeb8bbf8395437c5dc3c512c}20page\/118natneuro_mednick_brief.pdf\">improved memory test results<\/a> as fully as did eight hours of sleep.<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">In addition to strategic naps, a tactic that is shared by <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/buffer.com\/\">Buffer<\/a> is called the <a class=\"markup--anchor markup--p-anchor\" href=\"http:\/\/www.fastcompany.com\/3053036\/how-to-be-a-success-at-everything\/the-simple-technique-to-fit-a-40-hour-work-week-into-167-h?utm_source\">Pomodoro Technique.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">Here\u2019s how it works:<\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\"><img class=\"aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/g.fastcompany.net\/multisite_files\/fastcompany\/imagecache\/inline-large\/inline\/2015\/11\/3053036-inline-buffer2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"429\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"graf--p\">This means 25 minutes of <strong class=\"markup--strong markup--p-strong\"><em class=\"markup--em markup--p-em\">distraction-free<\/em><\/strong> work\u200a\u2014\u200awithout Facebook, phone notifications, or multi-tasking!
