{"id":33627,"date":"2015-06-25T09:46:42","date_gmt":"2015-06-25T17:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=33627"},"modified":"2016-09-02T12:26:17","modified_gmt":"2016-09-02T20:26:17","slug":"4-language-tips-to-positively-change-your-psyche","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/4-language-tips-to-positively-change-your-psyche\/","title":{"rendered":"4 Language Tips to Positively Change Your Psyche"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p class=\"p1\"><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Research has shown the language and word choices we use in our daily lives can positively or negatively impact our lives. \u00a0 Yet, for most of us we often don\u2019t pay a lot of attention to the words we choose to use to express ourselves.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What happens is when we unconsciously go about our day using language that limits our autonomy and choices, we often cause ourselves to have unnecessary self-inflicted stress.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">To turn this around, you need to make a conscious effort to start listening and notice what comes out of your mouth.<\/span><span class=\"s2\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Often the unhelpful language takes the form of you referring to yourself negatively like \u2018I\u2019m an idiot\u2019 to making innocent statements using words and self-sabotaging language that limits positive change. i.e. I should stop procrastinating.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">When you catch yourself using this type of language.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Stop.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Forgive yourself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Re-assess the words you have used.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>And then consciously choose to use language that is encouraging, empowering and positive. <span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p2\"><span class=\"s1\">Here are some ideas to use language to get you started in a positive direction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>1. Replace \u2018Busy\u2019 with \u2018Full\u2019<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In an article for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.huffingtonpost.com\/scott-dannemiller\/busy-is-a-sickness_b_6761264.html\"><span class=\"s3\">The Huffington Post<\/span><\/a>, Scott Dannemiller articulates how busy is a sickness and why the majority of us often overreact and \u201cvoluntarily create unnecessary stress in our lives\u201d because we live in a society that defines our worth by our doing instead of being.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">What he decided to do is to eliminate the word \u201cbusy\u201d from his vocabulary whenever people asks him how he is doing, and replaces it with \u201cfull\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">With this simple switch in word, he has empowered himself to create a new habit.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of letting busyness control him, he is taking back his control and is choosing what he enjoys and wants to put on his happiness plate.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p6\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>2. Remove The Should, Must, Have Factor<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">I <b><i>should<\/i><\/b> spend more time with my family, I <b><i>have <\/i><\/b>to lose weight, I <b><i>must <\/i><\/b>pick up groceries tonight.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Should, must and have are words that limit your choices and autonomy.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><i>\u2018Shoulds\u2019<\/i> can go on and on.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of focusing on the should, focus on thinking, is it something I want to do? Is it something that allows me to spend time with people that matter? Is it something that enhances my well-being?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Your time and energy is valuable, so if it is something you have no desire in doing that brings little fulfillment in your life, it\u2019s time to cut it out of your schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">If it turns out whatever you are \u2018should\u2019ing is something that will have a positive impact on your life, then <b><i>change \u2018should\u2019<\/i><\/b> to <b><i>\u2018I get to\u2019<\/i> <\/b>or <b><i>\u2018I\u2019m going to\u2019<\/i>, <i>\u2018I want to\u2019<\/i>, <i>\u2018I\u2018d really like to\u2019, \u2018I will\u2019, \u2018I can\u2019<\/i><\/b>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>You get the gist.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>These terms implies positive action.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>It gives you a sense that YOU made the decision to do it and thus, converts the experience of what you\u2019ll be doing into something productive.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Similarly, you can also apply the suggested phrases mentioned above to replace <b><i>\u2018I have to\u2019<\/i><\/b><i> <\/i>and <b><i>\u2018I must\u2019<\/i><\/b>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>3. Use words to shift your perception to possibility<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">Let\u2019s get straight to an example.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Instead of \u201c<i>I haven\u2019t found my ideal partner.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><b><i>Add \u2018yet\u2019.<\/i><\/b><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Or use the phrase, \u201c\u2018<b><i>I\u2019m in process\u2019<\/i><\/b> of finding my ideal partner.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In doing so it can help soothe anxiety and the feeling of \u2018lack\u2019 or being \u2018not enough\u2019, as <b><i>\u2018yet\u2019 <\/i><\/b>and <b><i>\u2018I\u2019m in the process\u2019<\/i><\/b> suggests that at a future time it will happen.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Thus, it creates a sense of hopefulness and a space of allowance that opens your mind to considering possibilities. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\"><b>4. Change tenses <\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">We often let our past stories dictate our future, with the \u2018I can\u2019t\u2026\u2019, \u2018I don\u2019t know how to..\u2019 get in the way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">When you have an \u2018a-ha\u2019 and realize you can, it\u2019s time to turn this around.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>Add the words <b>\u2018before now\u2019<\/b> or <b>\u2018until now\u2019 <\/b>at the end of the disempowering statements we make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p5\"><span class=\"s1\"><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">This sets the tone that going forward you are ready. You can.
