{"id":29020,"date":"2014-12-30T10:01:11","date_gmt":"2014-12-30T18:01:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=29020"},"modified":"2014-12-30T10:02:19","modified_gmt":"2014-12-30T18:02:19","slug":"three-uses-nlp-everyday-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/three-uses-nlp-everyday-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Three Uses Of NLP in Everyday Life"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/12\/nlp.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">1\u00a0 Red alert!<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The NLP concept of \u2018state\u2019 is one I find useful in many situations.\u00a0 By \u2018state\u2019 we mean the emotional, intellectual imaginative and physical condition we are in at any given time.\u00a0 NLP teaches us both that states can be changed, and how to change them, this giving us power areas of life that traditional \u2018common sense\u2019 says we have little power over.<\/p>\n<p>For example, for many people, \u2018getting angry\u2019 is just something that happens to them.\u00a0 Some annoying stimulus occurs, the \u2018angry\u2019 button is pushed and, like Pavlov\u2019s dog, off they go.\u00a0 NLP taught me to monitor my internal states, to stand back and notice them.\u00a0 If I feel anger rising, I can choose if I want to use it or not. Usually the best answer is to back off.\u00a0 States can be \u2018broken\u2019 by choosing to act or think in a new way (a simple physical action will often do the trick), after which a new, calmer state can be got to and whatever has caused the anger can be sorted.<\/p>\n<p>You can create a culture around you that uses this: I expect people to be able to manage their own states; if they have their own \u2018red alert\u2019 moment, it is OK for them to tell me, then disappear till they have calmed down.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">2\u00a0 As others see us<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>The above process is essentially about objectivity: being able to stand outside our emotions and old patterns of reaction.\u00a0 NLP also taught me how to stand outside situations and see others\u2019 point of view \u2013 something we are often told we \u2018should\u2019 do but rarely told <i>how to<\/i> do.<\/p>\n<p>NLP uses simple physical space to achieve this.\u00a0 When considering a situation in which you are involved, you make a physical map of the matter, with different people taking up different spaces in the room where you are situated.\u00a0 You then simply move to the space that you have allocated to each participant, tell yourself that you are that person and let your subconscious tell you how that person is experiencing matters.\u00a0 You can have a dialogue with other people (or at least your mental model of them) in other spaces.<\/p>\n<p>Keep some space free to be a \u2018fly on the wall\u2019, a total outsider who is watching the interaction. How do things look from this place?<\/p>\n<p>This may all sound spooky, but it often reveals remarkable insights.\u00a0 It is based on the work of therapist Fritz Perls, who used it to bring about startling changes in people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n<h1><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">3\u00a0 A seasonal one: how to avoid a cold!\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/h1>\n<p>Sometimes when I wake up feeling a bit shivery but have a busy day ahead, I use a simplified version of an NLP process called \u2018six step reframing\u2019 to keep the cold at bay.\u00a0 The underlying insight is that when you start feeling \u2018coldy\u2019, this is because there is a part of you eager to rest, and which will ensure you get a cold if you don\u2019t do as it wants (as that will finally make you slow down). \u00a0This part can be very insistent \u2013 but you can negotiate with it.\u00a0 Try making your right hand the part and your left the rest of you, then set up a dialogue between these two.\u00a0 Agree things like an early night or a few days\u2019 healthy eating and drinking until you sense the rest-seeking part is satisfied.\u00a0 Then go to work, do what you have to do, then fulfill your side of the bargain.<\/p>\n<p>Again, this may sound strange, but I have used this many times and it nearly always works.<\/p>\n<p>NLP has acquired a mixed reputation; it can be seen as the tool of dodgy salespeople or of stage hypnotists.\u00a0 I am very concerned to right this balance, to show that it is actually a set of simple techniques that everyone can use to make their lives better, often in quite ordinary ways.<\/p>\n<p>&#8212;&#8212;&#8212;<\/p>\n<p><em>Robbie Steinhouse is Director and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nlpschool.com\/\">Master Trainer at NLP School<\/a> in London, and in the past has taught people with every job title imaginable.
