{"id":2760,"date":"2010-06-20T19:45:29","date_gmt":"2010-06-21T03:45:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/?p=2760"},"modified":"2013-08-22T14:45:17","modified_gmt":"2013-08-22T22:45:17","slug":"this-is-why-self-improvement-programs-fail-and-heres-exactly-how-you-can-actually-use-them-to-make-your-life-better","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.pickthebrain.com\/blog\/this-is-why-self-improvement-programs-fail-and-heres-exactly-how-you-can-actually-use-them-to-make-your-life-better\/","title":{"rendered":"This is Why Self Improvement Programs Fail and Here&#8217;s Exactly How You Can ACTUALLY Use Them to Make Your Life Better"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"margin-top: 0px; margin-bottom: 0px;\" class=\"sharethis-inline-share-buttons\" ><\/div><p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/cn1.kaboodle.com\/hi\/img\/b\/0\/0\/51\/9\/AAAAC2HStg0AAAAAAFGQlg.jpg\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been trying to improve your life with the help of \u2018self improvement information\u2019 and have gotten little to no results, you\u2019re not alone\u2026<\/p>\n<p>In fact, most people who try self improvement resources fail to get the promised results.<\/p>\n<p>(I\u2019m talking about self help\/ development\/ improvement books, audio programs, seminars and so on, from weight loss tips to \u2018success skills\u2019 to relationship advice and anything in between).<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve been there myself for many years, until I\u2019ve finally \u2018found the solution\u2019, and I would like to share it with you\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019m going to give you one important step and a few simple rules to follow, in order to finally use self help resources to greatly improve your life.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>But first \u2013 why does this happen\u2026<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>You read a book that promises to improve your life in some way (or transform it altogether). In the best case you get excited for a few days, but then everything goes back to normal\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Nothing\u2019s changed and you either give up on \u2018self improvement\u2019, or move on to the next thing \u2013 another book, another recording or another seminar.<\/p>\n<p>Let\u2019s face it, sometimes you don\u2019t even read the whole book, or listen to that recorded seminar or that \u201cself hypnosis audio\u201d that you got.<\/p>\n<p>You may make excuses like \u201cI don\u2019t have time\u201d or \u201cit\u2019s not the right time\u201d, but if you&#8217;d be honest with yourself, you may have to admit that <strong>the real reasons are the same ones that led you to self help in the first place. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m talking about either <strong>lack of motivation and self discipline or lack of clarity and focus<\/strong> (or a combination of those). Think about it\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Who needs \u201cproductivity tips\u201d more than a \u2018chronic procrastinator\u2019?<br \/>\nWho needs weight loss advice more than someone who can\u2019t control their eating habits or is too lazy to work out?<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line &#8211; self improvement hasn\u2019t worked for you because you just weren\u2019t ready for it. But that\u2019s about to change\u2026<\/p>\n<p>First, you must take this crucial step\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>Create the Habit of Self Improvement <\/strong><\/p>\n<p>As I said before, lack of time is one of the most common excuses for not taking advantage of self help resource. You won\u2019t have that excuse, once you MAKE the time\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Decide on a time (and maybe a place) for daily \u2018self improvement sessions\u2019. Start with something you can commit to, even just 15 minutes a day.<\/p>\n<p>In those sessions you can write and read you goals, meditate, listen to hypnosis audios or even do some Yoga exercises. It doesn\u2019t really matter\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>At least at first what matters most is not what you do in your sessions, but that you actually do them on a daily basis, so they become part of your life &#8211; a strong habit.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Do it for at least 30 days and you\u2019re on the right track. Then you can raise the bar a little &#8211; either increase the length of your sessions, ad another daily session, or decide on new things that you\u2019d do in your sessions.<\/p>\n<p>NOTE: If you already spend a lot of time reading or listening to self help material, don&#8217;t waste your &#8220;self sessions&#8221; doing the same thing. Instead \u2013 focus on taking action on the information you learn from all those resources.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rules for Getting the Most Out of Self Improvement Programs<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>My personal experience shows that good self improvement resources can really help you change your life for the better\u2026 if you follow these \u2018rules\u2019\u2026<\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Believe it\u2019s possible<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is really key. You must believe that you can create changes in your life and especially \u2013 that YOU can change.<\/p>\n<p>You don\u2019t even have to believe in the \u2018self help resources\u2019. It\u2019s all about YOU. Whether you call it \u201cthe law of attraction\u201d or basic psychology (like I would) \u2013 your thoughts shape your reality\u2026<\/p>\n<p>If you have trouble believing that, then the only self improvement resource you should invest your time in is one that will convince you of it.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Take control<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>No book or program has been created especially for you, so you shouldn\u2019t &#8216;play a static role in this game&#8217;. Don&#8217;t follow instructions blindly, and don\u2019t expect a book or tape to motivate you enough to take action.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, self help resources are just tools, and it\u2019s your job to use them in a way that fits you, your life and your needs.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Focus on self change<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In order to improve your life, you need to focus on the one thing that you have most control over. That one thing is YOU of course.<\/p>\n<p>When you learn new self improvement techniques, focus on what you need to change in yourself in order to make them work. It mostly comes down to creating HABITS.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Stick to your level<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You have to realize where you are right now and set yourself realistic goals. There&#8217;s a good chance that you&#8217;d have to start with the basics \u2013 overcoming your limiting beliefs, raising your motivation and so on.<\/p>\n<p>For example, don\u2019t read \u201cHow to make a 6 figure income\u201d or \u201cHow to become an athlete\u201d when what you really need is to \u201cstop procrastinating\u201d or \u201covercome compulsive eating\u201d.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Set your own pace<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Self improvement resources tend to raise our hopes for amazing results in a short time, but in reality it rarely works that way.<\/p>\n<p>Don\u2019t rush. Focus on small achievements over time, be patient and persistent and enjoy the process.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Get less information and take more action<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A while ago I used to read, watch and listen to self improvement materials all the time. I could listen to the same recordings over and over again\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I think I was fooling myself to believe that just consuming a lot of this stuff would somehow change my life. Well, it didn\u2019t happen, until I started taking action of course.<\/p>\n<p>My point is that you should get the most out of any one resource before you move on to the next one. Focus on taking action on the information, instead of just getting as much of it as you can.<\/p>\n<p>You may want to reduce the amount of information you\u2019re getting \u2013 buy less books, remove yourself from email lists, visit less blogs and so on. (Go for quality instead of quantity).<\/p>\n<p>There you have it \u2013 one crucial step and six important rules to follow in order to finally get closer to the results the self improvement resources promise.<\/p>\n<p>I have a lot more to say about this, but I want to keep it short and simple\u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u2026which brings me to my final note\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Keep things in perspective! There\u2019s always room for improvement, but don\u2019t forget to enjoy your life as it is, appreciate yourself as you are, and be grateful for all that you already
