It will be okay.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Not so good \u2013 <em>\u201cGod will never give you more than you can handle.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Even if the person has a faith system that includes God, this phrase has the tacit implication that if you can\u2019t handle things, you must not have enough faith, you\u2019re a bad Christian, etc.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cThis must be so hard for you.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Not so good \u2013 <em>\u201cI\u2019m sure it\u2019s all for the best.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Ack! Try really hard not to say this! Right now, the grieving person doesn\u2019t see that anything is for the best except to have her loved one back.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to understand why these things happen.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Not so good &#8211; <em>Saying nothing at all.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is actually one of the worst things that can happen to a grieving person: having people ignore his pain. If you\u2019re not sure what to say, or are uncertain that the person wants to talk about it, it\u2019s okay to say just that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>I&#8217;m not sure what to say but I want you to know I&#8217;m here for you.\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>4. Not so good \u2013 <em>\u201cHe\u2019s in a better place\u201d<\/em> or <em>\u201cJust be happy he isn&#8217;t in pain anymore.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>These things are always so well-intentioned, but ouch! The place the griever wants him to be is with her, no matter how much pain he was in or how difficult the caregiving was.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cYou must miss him terribly.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>5. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>I know exactly how you feel.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is very tempting to say, but be careful: Even if you have experienced a loss, each person has their own unique path to travel so you can&#8217;t know exactly how he feels.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cI can\u2019t begin to understand how you feel\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>You\u2019ll feel better soon.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a presumptive thing to say and it\u2019s more for your benefit than your friend\u2019s. You <strong>want<\/strong> her to feel better because you hate to see her suffer. Make sure you don\u2019t dismiss her grief.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cI\u2019ll be here for as long as you need me.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>7. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>Don\u2019t you think you should be over it by now?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The truth is, you never \u201cget over\u201d a death. The pain subsides and you are able to live your life again. But one is never \u201cover it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cI know this is still really painful for you.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>8. Not so good \u2013 <em>\u201cYou should\u00a0 _________.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each person has her own unique path of grief to follow so it isn&#8217;t helpful or comforting to make suggestions as to how she should grieve or suggest that she do certain activities to help her feel better.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>Do what you need to do to grieve &#8211; I&#8217;ll support you however I can\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>She wouldn\u2019t have wanted you to be sad.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Guilt alert! Saying this, even if it\u2019s true, may make the person feel like they \u201cshouldn\u2019t\u201d be sad and that they aren\u2019t handling the loss \u201cright.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>I can see that you are really sad and miss her so much.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>10. Not so good \u2013 <em>\u201cYou&#8217;ll get married again\u201d <\/em><\/strong>or<strong><em> \u201cYou can always have more children\u201d <\/em><\/strong>or<strong><em> \u201cAt least you have your other children.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>While these may be true, the person she really wants back and is grieving for isn&#8217;t here and she will not ever be able to replace him. Honor that.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>I know how much you loved him.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>11. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>Just stay busy and you&#8217;ll be okay.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is dismissive of the person&#8217;s feelings, no matter how good the intention. It is okay to say what worked for you when you experienced grief, but make sure it&#8217;s not in the form of a command.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>When I was grieving, staying busy was helpful for me, but that may or may not be what works best for you.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>12. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>You<\/em> <em>shouldn&#8217;t be sad in front of the children.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Children are often more upset by what they don&#8217;t know than what they do know, so sometimes it&#8217;s okay to model normal grief for the children.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>How are the kids doing with this?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>13. Not so good \u2013 \u201c<em>It&#8217;s<\/em> <em>time for you to get yourself together.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Each person&#8217;s path of grief is unique. Maybe it isn&#8217;t time for her to get herself &#8220;together&#8221; yet.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>It looks like this is a rough day for you. How about if I bring some dinner over at 6:00?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>14. Not so good &#8211; <em>Trying to cheer him up by telling jokes.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Humor can be really helpful in a lot of situations, but make sure that your use of humor isn&#8217;t just to change the subject away from feelings of sadness or to make <strong>you<\/strong> feel more comfortable.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 <em>\u201cI bet you miss her sense of humor.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>15. Not so good \u2013 <em>\u201cLet me know if I can help.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In many instances, the grieving person either doesn&#8217;t know what help she needs or it&#8217;s too hard to ask for help. Making specific suggestions and then asking her if it would be okay is much more concrete and useful.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Better \u2013 \u201c<em>I think it&#8217;s garbage day.
