The madman\/genius director Werner Herzog<\/a> is famous for making films in far off places which require near superhuman feats of endurance. \u00a0Both Herzog and his fictional creations are frequently driven to attempt ambitious projects in the face of immense adversity, such as pulling a full sized boat over a mountain, or walking barefoot from Munich to Paris<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0 Such feats require amazing vision and immense tenacity and Herzog has much to teach us about turning our dreams into reality.<\/p>\n

Everyone should pull a boat up a mountain at least once in their life<\/h3>\n

Herzog\u2019s most famous film, Fitzcorraldo<\/a>, involved pulling a full sized paddle streamer over a mountain in the Peruvian jungle.\u00a0 Herzog was not content to use special effects or models to complete the effect; it has to be the real thing.\u00a0 He believed that the act of actually pulling a boat over the mountain would bring out special qualities in the cast and crew and that they would rise to the challenge that was put before them.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Be bold, set yourself big challenges.\u00a0 Everyone has their own boat to pull up a mountain.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be afraid to start<\/h3>\n

Many people make excuses for not following their dreams.\u00a0 They may think that they don\u2019t have enough money, or are waiting for the right idea. It is fiendishly difficult to get started in the film industry, however, Herzog has no time for excuses:<\/p>\n

If you want to do a film, steal a camera, steal raw stock, sneak into a lab and do it!<\/em><\/p>\n

The message is simple, get started, you have no time to lose.\u00a0 Herzog famously encouraged one friend by betting him that he would eat his shoe<\/a> if he ever got his documentary completed.\u00a0 The film got made and Herzog stood by his word.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s going to be tough<\/h3>\n

In the documentary Burden of Dreams<\/a> which covers the marking of Fitzcorraldo, Herzog talks about the difficulty he had in bringing his vision to life<\/a>.\u00a0 Despite the enormously difficult circumstances, he states that he cannot give up his project, no matter what happens:<\/p>\n

\u2026if I abandon this project I would be a man without dreams and I don’t want to live like that: I live my life or I end my life with this project.<\/em><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Here Herzog reminds us that dreams are hard to achieve and it is always easier to give up. Aiming high and doing what you want to do is always the more difficult option and achieving your goals will require a great deal of hard work and dedication.\u00a0 However for dreamers, living life without dreams would be unthinkable.<\/p>\n

Even fish have dreams \u2026<\/h3>\n

At the end of Bad Lieutenant: Port of call – New Orleans<\/a> (perhaps not Hezog\u2019s greatest work), the main character (played by Nicholas Cage), asks \u2018do fish have dreams<\/a>\u2019. The meaning of this expression is never explained, but I find the question thought provoking.\u00a0 To me the character seems to be suggesting that even a fish, a creature that never sleeps, never stops swimming and never sleeps, has its own dream and ambitions.\u00a0 If this is true, then we should all remember not to give up on our ambitions no matter how hopeless the situation seems to be.<\/p>\n
