Great ideas Michael, they made me think of the importance of valuing our employees. When leaders learn how to identify the skills and talents of their employees they can let go and let their employees do what they do best. The team then becomes everyone rather than focusing solely on the leader. This helps distribute the workload while also encouraging everyone to contribute.

Managment or no, you still have to pilot the ship. Even if nobody is sailing with you. It may be fun to drift...but it is also a great way to get dashed on the rocks.

Something else that I would mention is that it is important to consider the advice and wisdom of those who have gone before. Yes, your situation may be different but you can avoid a lot of hazards if you follow the paths that others followed when they got where you want to go. Even the best skipper has sea-charts.

After two years of hobby-blogging, I've turned it into a business. This week I have created a marketing plan with daily tactics to move me forward - taking charge and piloting the ship to where I want to go.

I might not have any employees, but I am my own manager...

Great Post!!! We are all managers of our own life - even if not managing a company. Love the ship analogy - just as the ship has to change course from time to time, we have to be willing to change course in our life when its neccessary.

Another quote - "If you don't know where you're going, how will you know when you get there?"

BTW, I also think it's kind of funny that the captain of the ship analogy is used here, and that PickTheBrain recently published another article with the theme burn the boats =)

I highly recommend "One-Minute Manager" co-authored by the same man who wrote "Who Moved My Cheese" for all new managers. It's a quick read and full of great ideas how to be a great manager without letting it take over all your regular work, too. : )

As for being the captain of your own ship, I have a great series called "All About You!" designed to help you figure out the 3 big questions in life that everyone needs to answer to know to steer their own ship into the right harbors:

1. Who are you?
2. What do you want?
3. How do you get it?

great post- I actually just recently moved into a managerial position and can relate to what you've talked about here. I can't remember who said it, but there's a quote, "If you don't have goals, then you are destined to work for someone who does." This is so true. We are captains of our own ships and have a certain degree of control over where that ship is setting sail to!
