I completely agree that surrounding yourself with successful people is a key aspect f attracting success into your life. When I came to the city I now live in, I knew almost nobody. Now, I have a large and growing network, and this constantly unfolds opportunities for success/

Marelisa, I have to say, in all sports it's like that... you don't go where the ball is... you anticipate where it is going to be (unless you're the QB for football or the kicker for soccer... then you throw where the player will be... aka teamwork on both of them). It's the only way to "win".

I never realized how much those around us affect us in any way other than potentially stressing us out or making us feel better, but recently, I have noticed I tend to turn anything negative in my tone... even if I feel positive inside! Then, sadly, I realized after an extended weekend with my Grandmother, who raised me, exactly where that bitterness comes from. And I am currently trying to be very aware of myself and my tone and model myself after a few colleagues who are truly leaders (the first to cheer for another colleague's successes despite the fact that the leader does more than anyone else... and never complains).

It's all a balance, and I'm working hard to learn it, but I know you are right... you can only learn it by seeking out those "on the winning side". :)

Thanks for the great post!

Good post. I read somewhere that the best basketball players don't run toward the ball, they run toward the place where the ball will be moving next (they're predicting the future, albeit a few seconds into the future). I've also heard that 80% of what happens to you in life is a direct result of the people that surround you so you definitely should be with the winning side.

Thanks Stanley for the great article. As someone who has in the past year moved to a new city where I didn't know anyone (except for my wife's relatives), I found it very interesting to hear your personal story of success.

Also, when anyone ever mentions luck, I am reminded of this quote by Gary Player:

“The harder I work, the luckier I get.”

As far as relationships go, it's about knowing what qualities are important:

"The people we spend our time with have a powerful effect on us. They change us, whether we’d like to admit it or not. More specifically, they tend to make us more like they already are. Whiney people create more whiney people. Interesting people create more interesting people. That’s why it’s important to spend time with the right people and not the wrong ones.

"Now I’m not talking about right and wrong in the way only a comic book could do justice to. I’m talking about what’s right for you. That’s something we all need to figure out. By knowing what qualities you want to develop in yourself, you can figure out whether the people in your life are keeping you on track towards achieving that or are dragging you off course altogether."
