I love the idea of feeling states and moving away from or towards them. I also think you have hit upon something that goals are concrete real world ways for people to think they are getting somewhere without them consciously seeing were it is they are trying to get to.

Tara, I love this article. Goal setting is given an awful lot of attention and actually getting there is a whole different matter and most articles don’t deal with that in a creative way. You do. Nice job!

Great techniques on how to achieve goals in a shortcut method. Based on my personal experience while working with a Boss, I feel happier and contented when I got the right job.

Fabulous article, Tara. Few people follow through the actions required to achieve a goal and fewer consider what you’ve mentioned here–myself included. I’m halfway through a commitment to achieve five specific goals within one hundred days. I’ve found that daily tasks and action reviews have been critical in maintaining forward momentum.

Honestly evaluating my progress has allowed me to notice and correct mental obstacles. One of my goals was to increase my running speed, twice. Having succeeded with the first goal, I raised the bar to a seemingly impossible feat, one that detoured me from running for a week. I realized during that time that running fast was not as important as the meditative qualities I gain from regular runs. So I rewrote the goal.

Thanks to your article, I understand, my initial goal was not providing the feeling I was after. Now I can review the other goals with this in mind. Thank you!

Excellent ideas Tara. I especially like people clarifying what they expect to feel from their actions. That really would free people up from expecting that they will solve everything by just doing a certain action. I think it’s also positive and energizing for people to celebrate their accomplishments along the way instead of always focusing on that one goal. Sort of a broader definition of success that doesn’t rely on only one goal.

    Take care,

    Guy

Totally with you on this. We’ve been taught that our feelings come from the outside, but they don’t. And we only ever want things/ achievements because of how we think they’ll make us feel. And we can have all those feelings right now – we don’t have to put it off until we’ve changed our circumstances.

As a South African, Nelson Mandela is someone who reminds me what kind of leadership is possible when you choose to have the feelings you want and be the person you want to be – regardless of circumstances, because your feelings don’t come from the outside.

Thanks Quinn, great point. It is so helpful to ask…why exactly do I want this thing that I want? What hypothesis is operating here, and what might be faulty about that hypothesis? Asking these questions can save us a ton of wasted time and effort!

Glad you liked it! And glad you brought up the example about your boss. That’s why I don’t advocating throwing out all external goals and changes. As much as I’m a devotee of changing our inner life to change our quality of life, I believe what’s happening externally makes a big difference. Hence the idea of “working on all three levels” described in the article. Thanks for reading.

Very cool, Fawn. I’m so glad that identifying the desired feeling state will be a useful tool for you. And congrats on your running!

Thanks Guy. You make some great points in your comment. I totally agree that this approach can help us stay more energized and motivated along the way – because we get to have so many victories and experiences of the positive feeling state we desire. And we can be flexible – if some specific outcome doesn’t work out, we can easily shift to other ways to get the feelings we want. Thanks for reading!

As coaches, I think we are always balancing two different truths – that on the one hand we can change our feelings entirely from the inside, and on the other hand, the conditions of our lives do impact our feeling states.

As I’m sure you do as well, I want my clients to create huge, amazing, fabulous things in their external lives, AND I want them to know they have more power than they think to get feel fulfillment and satisfaction RIGHT NOW.

Thanks for reading and sharing your thoughts!
