I don't feel that you emphasize the value of the library enough in this instance. The library system I have carries quiiiite a number of educational books along with tapes, CDs, DVDs, and computer programs. Thanks to the library, I've learned sooo much about sign language, Japanese, and a few other languages as well.

Never underestimate the library.

This is a great article! A part that I thought could be added on is the necessity to catalog or document your progress. Without this it is somewhat difficult to set a routine and actually progress.

This is especially true for college graduates who are adjusting to life after graduation. No class schedules, finals, or exams... just about ultimate freedom. By documenting their successes and failures, they can push further to achieve their goals and to be able to visualize their next step in life.

I love internet, you can find so much informations there. Last time I stumbled on free materials from MIT. Great stuff here http://ocw.mit.edu/
I am working with Moodle (open source Learning Management System) professionally and I see great possibilities, now and also in the future, to learn something more complex with use of e-learning, with tutor help and still doing it when you have time, when you are comfortably sitting at home.. But this require great level of motivation and persistence, that I often lack sadly. Maybe a post about how to stick with self-learning and reach your goal would be useful too ;).

It seems that self-education vs. traditional-education is almost like comparing an entrepreneur to an employee of an established company. The entrepreneur may not have the immediate status from others gained by working at an established company, but he has the ability to do what he wants and has almost unlimited growth potential. In the same way, the self-educated individual may not have the reputation of gaining a credential from a structured curriculum at formal institution, but he has the opportunity to find exactly what he needs for a lower cost.
