How to Stop Limiting Beliefs

Most of us have limiting beliefs: ideas and thoughts in our mind that convince us that we’re “not good enough” to accomplish our goals. Why is it so tough to get rid of limiting beliefs?

Do you attack limiting beliefs though things like positive self-talk (“I know I can do it!”) and imaging (imagining ourselves being successful)?  I feel those often don’t work.  The problem is they only address the symptom (convincing yourself not to feel bad) rather than the cause of your limiting belief (why you feel bad in the first place).  Read the Rest of This Article »

Paul got off 2 hours later than normal. He was working overtime to save up for a home purchase he wanted to make at the end of the year. Tired and ready to get home, he slowly walks to the car while rambling through his pockets trying to find his keys. As he finally arrives to where his car was parked, he is alarmed to find shards of broken glass and tire marks but no vehicle. Socrates, the great Greek philosopher, was once stopped by an acquaintance as he passed through the markets.

“I’ve something important to tell you,” he said. “It’s about your friend.”

“That’s very kind of you,” Socrates said. “But, don’t tell me just yet. I run all information through the Three Filters Test to ascertain if I want to know it.”

The man looked somewhat puzzled as Socrates continued, “First is the filter of truth. Whatever you want to tell me, have you seen or witnessed it first-hand?”

“Umm…I actually heard it from someone,” the man said, “and, it is from a trusted source.”

“Alright. But that does not pass my first test,” Socrates added, “since you don’t know whether it’s true.”

“Second is the filter of goodness. Is that a good statement you want to make about my friend?”

“Not really. That’s the reason I wanted—”

Socrates interjected, “So, you want to tell me something bad about someone but don’t know if it’s true.”

“The last is the filter of utility.” He continued, “Your statement about my friend, is that gonna be useful to me?”

“Not really as such. I just wanted to share”

“Well, if the information is not necessarily true, it is not good, and, it is of no use,” Socrates concluded, “please, I don’t want to know about it.” Read the Rest of This Article »

What is a key difference between those who dust themselves off and keep ‘moving forward’ after one of life’s ‘hits’ and those who drop like a stone?

It’s not possible in one article to cover all of the reasons people struggle to move forward. (although that didn’t stop Americans spending 13 million on personal development in 2010 trying to find out!).
