The Dividends of Understanding and Embracing Your Failures

No one likes to talk about the dreaded “F” word. No…not that one. The meaning of the word Failure has joined the ranks of words and phrases that traditionally are regarded as lewd or vulgar – to the point that it’s almost taboo to discuss someone’s failures.

But in some arenas, the tide may be shifting a bit. Recognizing that innovation comes only from risk taking and that employees will shy away from experimentation if they fear retribution, some companies have begun rewarding employees courageous enough to seek new, creative ways to solve problems. That concept signals a fundamental shift in perspective about what it means to fail. Under this emerging theory, a failure merely represents a bump in the road toward success and should not be regarded as defeat.

Embracing failure may seem like a novel concept, but the idea of trial and error is the foundation of some vocations. Chemists, for example, often must conduct experiment after experiment before they uncover the correct formula, and the same is true for many other science-related professions. Likewise, the most celebrated chefs in the world routinely tweak their recipes and test new flavors in their dishes; along the way, lots of food gets burned and/or trashed. In addition, physicians may conduct numerous tests or try various treatments before settling on a diagnosis. But your average chemist does not view the first 20 failed attempts leading up to the 21st successful one in a negative light. Famous chefs don’t fret over the failed recipes that precede their masterpieces. And doctors we don’t consider doctors failures if it takes time and multiple attempts to get the answer right. Instead, in these professions, failure is accepted as a normal part of the process toward achievement.

While some leaders in other industries are catching on the idea that failure can breed innovation, most businesses have a lot to learn when it comes to recognizing the upside of failure. Most of us would be well served to consider some of these ideas:

Learning from Failure

Rather than wallowing in regret following a misstep, regardless of the degree of the setback, true leaders consider failure as an opportunity to learn. Carefully analyzing exactly why the last process didn’t work, why the last strategy was not well received, or why the last device didn’t function properly is imperative when moving beyond failure.

Resilience through Passion

The temptation to focus on disappointment following a failure, particularly one experienced after the execution of a well-crafted strategy, may be overwhelming. However, the most impressive success stories involve individuals who persevere in the face of adversity. How does one overcome the emotional sting after a crushing defeat? First, it helps if you have a strong personal investment in solving the problem at hand. A sense of passion underlying the mission can make a huge difference in mustering the strength to move beyond failure.

Don’t Make the Same Mistake Twice

All of this talk about embracing failure may sound very touchy-feely or new-agey to more traditional types. However, no one has ever suggested that all failures deserve praise. In fact, many failures should not be tolerated all. While failures that result from courageous risk taking, conceived and executed in smart way, may merit praise and can teach us valuable lessons, failures resulting from poor judgment or a lack of thoughtful preparation have no upside.

The Proof

Not convinced? Then consider the following examples. These individuals became famous as a result of their incredible achievement. However, as is often the case, their success was not immediate, and they fell on their face before they achieved their dreams.

Michael Jordan was initially cut from his high school basketball team. Instead of giving up, he honed his skills and developed an undying passion for the game. He later led the UNC Tar Heels to an NCAA championship as an underclassman and became the standard by which all NBA players after him are judged.

Henry Ford had two failed business before he became a pioneer in the automotive industry. Perhaps referring to his earlier not-so-successful ventures, Ford once famously said, “Failure is the opportunity to begin again more intelligently.”

Steven Spielberg dreamed of becoming a filmmaker early in life, but he hit a major roadblock when the USC film school rejected him not once, not twice, but three times. Undaunted, Spielberg blazed his own trail, becoming one of the most successful and respected movie directors in history.

Everyone can’t succeed at everything, but taking some cues from these famous icons lends credence to the idea that learning from your mistakes and following your passions can sometimes turn failure into opportunity.

Have you ever had something that you really, really wanted fall unexpectedly into your lap?

Did you think it was a coincidence?

Have you ever noticed that, that seems to happen to some people, all the time?

Is that a coincidence?

Let’s find out:

The Law of Attraction

You might have heard of this before, it is quoted often, but if you are like me (who just recently learned what it really is about) you never completely grasped its power.

85 % of all communication is your body language

The Law of Attraction states that whatever you “ask the universe for, with passion, will be given” if you ask enough.

The reason for this is that when you can visualize something and can see it in your life you start to send out those signals with your body language, the way you talk, the way you act and the opportunities you see and react to.

Before long you will get an idea, be presented with an opportunity or in some other fashion get what you “asked for”.

Take action at once on inspiration

This is the second step of the process. When you get an opportunity or an idea that will move you towards your goals, you need to take action at once. If you wait your chances of success will quickly diminish.

The longer you wait the less a chance you have. Because of this, if you learn to react quickly when inspiration strikes you will succeed a lot more often.

You can ask for anything

This truly works for anything. I have heard dozens of stories about people visualizing and asking for a parking space at the entrance of a crowded mall. For some reason they always seem to get a spot right next to the door.

It works for business:
You ask for a particular result and all of a sudden inspiration strikes and you get the idea that changes everything. If you act at once you can make it reality and succeed.

I met my wife by using this law:

When I was 14 years old I decided I wanted a girlfriend, I had very little luck with women, mostly because of my confidence.

But one day I decided, “Next Tuesday I will have a girlfriend!”

I told my friends, but they just laughed and asked, how are you going to accomplish that. I had no idea how; I just knew that I would find a great girl.

Next Monday I had a baseball game and my friend, another player on the team, had brought a friend. An extremely attractive girl, way out of my league. We started talking though and really hit it off.
We went on a date the next day and today she is my wife!

You should have seen the look of surprise on my friends faces when they met her.

Don’t be afraid to ask

The worst thing that can happen if you ask is that you don’t get it. The best, is that you do. Don’t be afraid to try it out.

Remember it can take a couple of months before inspiration strikes, depending on what you ask, but if you really want it enough, it is worth the wait.

Conclusion

This technique has worked for thousands of individuals for hundreds of years.
Visualize what you want, feel yourself in possession of it, feel the sense of fulfillment, of happiness and take action as soon as inspiration strikes.

Even though I wasn't a scared chicken at all, fear remained a part of my thoughts and often prevented me from falling asleep. Generally speaking I would say that all my worries had one thing in common: the fear of failure.

Fear is like a toxic poison – it seems you can’t get rid of it by any means and it prevents you from living the life you always wanted to live. I was being “poisoned” with fear for myself and continuously worried about the events that might take place in the future, which included – besides many other things – messing up with my grades or not being able to master the defiances of my life. Even though I wasn’t a scared chicken at all, fear remained a part of my thoughts and often prevented me from falling asleep. Generally speaking I would say that all my worries had one thing in common: the fear of failure.

Overcome the fear of failure

#1 Having the right mindset about failure

When I was about 20 years old, I’ve made an interesting conclusion that would help me to view failure from a completely different perspective. I started to acknowledge failure as exactly what it is: an unavoidable part of everyone’s life – nothing more and nothing less. I knew that I had failed in the past and that I was going to fail every once in a while in the future, even if I did my very best to avoid this. There was simply no way around it, so I started to change my attitude towards failure in general. I realized that, even though I experienced every failure as a dolorous event that slammed me on the ground, every one of them helped me in the long term to become the man that I am today. My failures had not only helped me to improve myself and avoid similar mistakes in the future, but also opened up many other opportunities and chances for me; I just had to spot and identify them.

#2 What’s better: failing vs. not having tried at all?

I nearly forgot to tell you what the “interesting conclusion” was I’ve talked about in the above. Back when I was 20 years old I had realized that there was only one way for me to avoid every failure straight away from the beginning: by not trying at all, which is – at least for me – identical to not having lived anyways. I reasoned that the sole attempt of trying to avoid any kind of failure by any means would lead to the irrevocable mistake of not trying at all, which isn’t a promising option.

#3 Imagining the “grandparents-scenario”

When I’m an old man, I would like to tell my grandchildren about all the challenges I endured during my life, laugh with them about the clumsy mistakes I made and show them all kinds of opportunities that have come into my life after I had failed. Nevertheless, one thing that I never ever want to have to tell my grandchildren are the words, “it could have been“! I really don’t want to look back on my life only to discover all the great chances and exciting events I’ve missed, because of my fear of the possibility to fail every once in a while. The – what I call – “grandparents-scenario” tremendously helps me to clarify that it is not failure I should be worried about, but what results out of this fear: being too scared to do what I had planned to do!

#4 Taking one step at a time

When we’re facing really big challenges in our lives, we tend to get overwhelmed quite fast, simply by looking at the full extent of what lies in front of us. The most likely response towards this unknown situation is fear, which finally might paralyze and prevent us from approaching the challenge. The best advice that can be given in these situations is to approach the challenge one step at a time, even if you might experience some fear. Doing so will help you to get used to the new situation and will reduce your fears of the possibility that you could fail, especially when you experience your first sense of achievement.

And always keep in mind… There is no reason to be afraid of failure, if you never want to ask yourself the question, “what would have happened, if I had tried?”

If you want to succeed you have to be willing to do something extra. To go beyond the regular restraints and do more. You have to have the guts to pick yourself up after you fall and try again, and again, until you find the right fit.

Most people are afraid of failure. Some so afraid that they can’t attempt anything that involves the risk of failure.

But everyone that has ever succeeded did it by failing first. Failure is the precursor to success and the only was to succeed is by showing great persistence.

This is something we all struggle with. When the going gets tough the easiest thing to do, is give up. We have all had the chance to go out on the limb, do something extra that might result in extra ordinary results or in total ruin.

Most of us chose the safe rode, studying, getting a job and just doing what we were required to do. Which is fine, if it is what you want.

If you want to succeed you have to be willing to do something extra. To go beyond the regular restraints and do more. You have to have the guts to pick yourself up after you fall and try again, and again, until you find the right fit.

Napoleon Hill explains this well in his book “Think and Grow Rich”.
To succeed you first need a goal. You need to know what you are aiming for.

The next step is to make a plan for its completion.

Once you have made the plan, act on it and learn each time you fail.
Each time you fail it is because the plan wasn’t perfect. So go back and remake your plan with your knew found knowledge.
From their you can act upon the new plan.
Fail, rework it, fail again and rework the plan once more.

But even after all those failures, all those chances to give up, you must press on. Because sooner or later, you will find the perfect plan and you will succeed.
It can go faster than you ever imagined, but depending on where you are today it might require many many lessons eg. Failures first.

I want to share with you 4 lessons I have learned that have helped me stay on track and move towards my goals.

- Every problem is a lesson in disguise, the larger the problem the more important the lesson.

- Never give up

- Rewrite your plans with the new information

- Take action on your plan and your newly acquired knowledge

Follow these 4 steps and I can almost guarantee you success.

It has worked for thousands of millionaires before us and will work for millions in the years to come.

Conclusion

Decide to take charge of your life and become the success you deserve to be.

Don’t let anything or anyone stand in the way of your goals. Do what it takes and learn from every speed bump on the way.

We use the word failure a lot. I’d venture to say we use it too much. And what does this word mean, anyway? What exactly is “failure”? Well, since I don’t know everything (sometimes), let’s consult with the dictionary.

Do you think your life is a failure? Why? Is it because you haven’t accomplished any of your goals? Or because you aren’t financially stable? Don’t have a beautiful home?

People can be very dramatic. We’ll stub our toe on the way out the door in the morning, and exclaim “Life sucks!”

We’ll create a goal to become a self-made millionaire, won’t work very hard to achieve the goal, and then 2 months later when we discover that our checking account has a balance of $3.24, scream, “I can’t do this!! I’m a failure!”

We use the word failure a lot. I’d venture to say we use it too much. And what does this word mean, anyway? What exactly is “failure”? Well, since I don’t know everything (sometimes), let’s consult with the dictionary.

failure (n.) – an act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful; lack of success
Alright, so according to the dictionary, if we lack success, we’ve failed. That’s good to know. So, what is success?

success (n.) – the favorable or prosperous termination of attempts or endeavors

In other words, once you’ve accomplished your attempts or endeavors, you are a success. Really? How dare that dictionary!

Doesn’t it know that success can mean lots of different things? How about this?

1. You’re a success because you are able to remain positive in a world that’s full of negativity and hopelessness.

2. You’re a success because you spread love into the world.

3. You’re a success because you’re constantly willing to learn, grow, and expand.

4. You’re a success because you’re flexible. You realize that if one thing doesn’t work out, you can always try something else.

5. You’re a success because you understand that in order for there to be good times, there have to be bad times.

6. You’re a success because you live in a world where everyone tells you that you “can’t,” yet you try anyway.

So do you understand now the one and only reason why your life would be a failure?

It’s simple.

It’s because you think it is.

I get a lot of questions from people who read my articles or visit my site asking me if I can give them some specific steps to follow to get started making changes in their lives.

Unfortunately, I don’t really have a step-by-step program for self improvement, so as much as I’d love to help, I can’t really tell them much other than to just get started.

But I’m also happy to give that very simple piece of advice, because getting started is the hardest part of… well, anything. And it’s the most intimidating. There’s a fear of the unknown that likes to creep its way in and it often leads to another overwhelming fear: failure.

And that will often stop us right in our tracks. I’ve seen it absolutely paralyze some people.

And that’s a shame because it’s really a pretty irrational fear, if you think about it. Failure should actually be something we embrace, because failure, believe it or not, is the best teacher.

Think about it. When have you learned and progressed the most during your life? I’m going to go right ahead and guess that it was after making a mistake and realizing that that was the wrong way to do it.

If you’re like most people, then that’s how it’s done. And then if you’re smart about it, then you’ve taken what you’ve learned and made the necessary course corrections, and continued on, never to make that same mistake again. Congratulations.

I really only view failure as failure if someone insists on doing things the wrong way over and over again without really caring or paying much attention to what’s going on. But most people don’t do that.

Most people learn from their mistakes. So you might as well go ahead and make them. But that means getting over your fears and finally getting started.

All you really need is a little bit of confidence. But true confidence doesn’t just come out of nowhere for no reason. Confidence comes with experience. Most people build their confidence by achieving small gains along the way. Once they see that they can do it, then they become confident enough to move onto the next step in their development. Then they complete that one, build a little more confidence, and start working towards the next step. And so on.

I like to call it the upward spiral.

Stop and think about the things you’ve already done, like learning to ride a bicycle, or drive a car, or any job you’ve ever had. At first, you didn’t know how to do them, and you were probably pretty nervous, but little by little, you got it, and eventually it became almost second nature – almost like you could do it in your sleep – and any nerves you may have had about it disappeared.

So if you really want to get things done, and really change your life for the better, then at some point you’re going to have to risk falling off your bicycle, so to speak.

To add a little color, I’ve included this quote from Teddy Roosevelt: “Far better is it to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure… than to rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy nor suffer much, because they live in a gray twilight that knows not victory nor defeat.”

Well said, Mr. President. Here’s another example: When I first started learning kung fu way back when, I was extremely nervous. My only goal that first day was to not fall on my face and make a fool of myself. Luckily, I didn’t, and I survived, and I kept going to class. The more I went, the more comfortable I got with it. And eventually I came to realize that it was silly of me to have been so concerned. Of course, it certainly helped that it was a good environment to learn in.

You see, success is not an all or nothing proposition. Your only choices are not to be a colossal failure or a colossal success. It doesn’t work that way.

OK, I’m repeating myself here, but real success is made up of smaller successes and achievements that build confidence and slowly get rid of that fear of the unknown. Which kind of means that you need to let yourself ride the wave, rather than looking only at the end goal. You’re never done growing, so you might as well let yourself enjoy the journey, rather than looking at everything as a fight for you to win or lose.

Have you ever heard the expression, “Slow and steady wins the race”? Well, when it comes to personal growth, it’s absolutely true.

Look, I get it. I know how intimidating a new venture can be. I’ve been there. I still go there sometimes. But I’m telling you, it’s really just that initial phase of fear that you need to get over. For most of us, once we’re up and running, it’s pretty easy to continue. The momentum’s already there.

So let’s say that your goal is to lose 50 pounds. Well, everyone already knows that to do that, you’re going to have to eat differently and get some exercise, but they don’t always know exactly how to get there. The billion or so choices they have in weight loss programs can be confusing and intimidating. And then don’t forget how tough it can be to make such a big lifestyle change (and it is a big one).

As a result, a lot of people give up before they start. So I try to make it simpler by telling them that if they want to lose 50 pounds, then lose 50 pounds. I understand that it’s not quite that easy, as I’ve just described, but making the decision to do so actually is. You won’t lose 50 pounds by tomorrow, but you can start today by doing your research and finding out the proper foods to eat and exercises to do to make you healthy, and not giving up when it seems overwhelming. You could also try talking to a nutritionist or a health and fitness expert for guidance.

Then you just gotta get to it, and stick to it. You’ll get there eventually.

The same principle holds true for any changes you want to make. If you want to find a new job, then find a new job. If you want to quit smoking, then quit smoking. Get started right now. There are plenty of experts who can help to guide you in the right direction, but at the same time, no one else can really do it for you.

So yes, you’ll probably make some mistakes along the way, but what does that really matter, as long as you’re still working towards your end goal?

Once again, Teddy Roosevelt has it right: “The man who makes no mistakes does not usually make anything.”

Image courtesy of the Dana Foundation

No one actually wants to encounter failure in their life. That’s because when you look at the isolated incident, it means that you haven’t found success. However, with the right attitude, you can use your failure in order to get yourself to success in an accelerated fashion.

Overcoming Failure

The first step to overcoming failure is to accept your situation. Tell yourself that failure is a natural part of life, and that you’re not superhuman so you will fail to succeed at certain junctures in your life.

When you attempt to be too perfect that can just be yet another failure on your part. It’ll cause you stress and you won’t be able to get yourself past to the part of acceptance. You might tell yourself that you’re over it when you really aren’t. You don’t want to be carrying that burden around with you forever.

Your Positive Outlook

The next thing to concentrate on is to turn your negative thoughts into positive ones. If you fail to succeed, don’t be tempted to wallow in it. It’ll mean that you’ve truly failed because you’re choosing to end your road to success.

With the right outlook on life, you can look at your failure as just a stepping stone on your way to success. Your goal is to seek out the silver lining, because it’s always there hiding in any negative situation.

I remember a time when I wanted to be a part of a sports team, I tried and I didn’t make the team. I could have just moved on and blamed others for the failure, but I chose to study the reasons why I didn’t make it. I asked the coach what I could work on and I practiced those skills. To make a long story short, the next year I was on the team and better yet, I was a starting player. I don’t believe I would have accomplished so much so fast had I not encountered the initial “failure”.

How Failure Can Speed Up Success

The above story illustrates how one can use a failure in order to get to success faster. There’s a vast difference between overcoming failure and accepting failure. When you’re in the process of overcoming failure you’re given the unique opportunity to analyze what went wrong.

Take the time to study the exact steps that you took and what outcome you received. Also study the reasons why the failure occurred. Maybe there’s a certain skill you can develop in order to finally reach success?

After this analysis you can draft up a new plan in order to get to success. Only this time you’ll be smarter and better equipped.

Never Give Up On Yourself

It may help you to stop using words like “failure” when it comes to your attempts at success. As long as you’re still trying on that road to success, then you actually haven’t failed. It’s only once you’ve given up that you’ve failed.

Life is tough though. To say “never give up” is easier said than done. Of course there will be times when you feel like giving up, everyone encounters these times. Just ask any successful person that you admire. However, it’s those people that still make the extra effort even when they feel like giving up that reach success. There’s nothing stopping you from being one of these people.

Of course you want to get to success as fast as you possibly can, but you must give yourself proper time. Everyone has their unique road and when you stop comparing yourself to others and just plough forward with your plans, you’ll get there before you know it.

Author’s Bio:

A fear of failure is one of the most common fears. It can be so scary that some people decide not to try at all in order to avoid failure altogether. In the end this just ends up being another kind of failure because you’ll never reach your full potential if you don’t even try.

Accepting Yourself

An important first step to overcoming fear of failure is accepting yourself. Once you accept yourself, you need to take it one step further and believe in yourself. This will come naturally to some, and some people will find that they need more work.

Think about specific situations in your life that you approached with confidence. That extra belief in yourself was likely the deciding factor between success and failure. You need to use that strong belief in yourself to combat fear.

Keep reminding yourself that success starts in your own mind. You need to have the right attitude because as soon as you don’t believe in yourself then failure is sure to follow. You might start to make excuses for yourself and you may even start blaming others or external sources. The way to get over the fear of failure is to stop making these excuses and take responsibility for your success.

Being Positive

Everyone has a bad day from time to time. That’s unavoidable. However, you do have the choice to think positively. You can turn a negative situation into a positive one with the right mindset.

You can stare failure in the face and combat fear with your outlook alone. Think about what the worst case scenario would be if you did in fact fail. Would it be the end of the world? What would be your game plan to pick yourself back up? Chances are that part of your fear of failure is a fear of the unknown. Once you think it through it may not seem quite as bad.

Ways to Combat Fear

You can work towards overcoming fear of failure in a number of ways. For starters, you can look at the situation as a chance to learn something. Always be on the lookout for the silver lining. If you do come face to face with failure, have the courage to pick yourself up and spend a good amount of time going over why you failed in that circumstance. That particular failure may have been required in your life in order for you to be lead to the path to success. If you allow the fear of failure to get the best of you, you wouldn’t have found the courage to even proceed.

Taking action is also a way to combat fear. If you have the right attitude, and plan for success, you just need to push yourself to go for it. Don’t overanalyze or think too much, just take some small actions.

When you’re in a particularly tough spot, you can always look for help from affirmations. These are short positive statements that are in the present tense. Tell yourself that fear is not getting the best of you. Tell yourself that you’re in the process of achieving great success. It may help you to relax and get out of the fear of failure mindset.

No One Is Perfect

When all is said and done, you should realize that no one is perfect. Of course you already know this, but many times that doesn’t stop people from being too hard on themselves. A fear of failure is also a fear of making a mistake. You can’t lead your life with a fear of making a mistake, because you’re bound to make them throughout your life. Just keep working on your attitude and your reactions and you’ll soon find success.
