Traffic is not king. Who wants 50 million idiots visiting your blog? I would rather have 5 readers who are smart activists and trying to improve the world selflessly, than millions of mediocres who just like to argue or follow trends.

You articulate something that has been gnawing at the back of my mind in a vague manner: a site should not be dependent on social media.

You are right. Focus on quality content, interacting with readers and other bloggers/Twitterers, and let nature take its course.

The mechanics of SU are simple and I don’t believe that you are a hand filtered victim. That said, yes, I think that SU is really worth to send reviews and stories there. The reason is curiosity and common passive behavior: People like to stumble and people like recommendations.

Yeah, the more I think about it, I don’t think it was intentional. It must just be some quirk in what makes a Top Stumbler. I’m still receiving plenty of visitors from SU so I definitely haven’t been banned or anything.

To be honest, I decided to be a little sensational, thinking a bit of controversy might bring some visitors to the blog.

Interesting. I am inclined to think they didn’t do it intentionally; at least I hope not! I installed and started using Stumbleupon thanks to you, so I would think SU would see the obvious potential benefits of what you did. Essentially, by giving information about your personal experience, you gave them a very valuable social media “two thumbs up” review. They wouldn’t be too bright to shun you, but sometimes this happens.

That really sucks, sorry to hear it.

Listen to your gut, if that’s what you think caused it, then you’re probably right.

Then again, they did just get bought out by eBay a couple days ago, so some things will be changing.
