Brilliant idea. Learn a foreign language by practicing with a native speaker who is learning your language. Write or speak your second language online to improve grammar or conversation.

Foreign language learning via a language exchange complements other forms of foreign language learning such as classroom, immersion and multimedia, because you get to practice all that you have learned with native speakers in a safe and supportive environment.

Foreign languages are the ideal subject area for the use of memory techniques. Learning vocabulary is often a matter of associating a meaningless collection of syllables with a word in your own language.

Traditionally people have associated these words by repetition – by saying the word in their own language and the foreign language time and time and time and time again.

Great article. I think your example of learning a new language serves as an excellent metaphor for anything one wants to achieve. Motivation dictates success. Any one who wants to loose weight, for example, or save money for a vacation will achieve that goal if their reason for doing it is powerful motivator. We must answer the “Why” … or move on.

I guess with new years resolutions, this is a good time to be examining motivations. I actually spent quite a lot of time thinking about this recently, and also wrote an article about motivation in language learning.
