The definition of stupid is doing the same thing, over and over again while expecting a different result.
This is a great article and reaffirms a decision I had to make recently. I have worked with a couple for YEARS to find them a home. Even tho they have NEVER purchased a home, he can tell by driving by a home that the foundation or roof is bad and she seems to know every homeowner, the history of every home within a 100 mile radius - general know-it-all type of person. They have the perception that every home is way over-priced and that they can pick up a gem for the price of dirt. I hit tilt, can't do it any longer. I had to cut my losses. Its to the point that I will NEVER recover the costs (much less my time) already incurred.
I wish them well.

I guess there's a fine line between determination and stupidity. It's good to know when to cut your losses and move on.

In economics, this is called the sunk costs idea. Don't make your decision by the costs you've already sunk into the project, those resources are gone and you'll never get them back. Instead, base your decision purely on the future benefit of the project and the resources you'll need to put into the project from now on. That's the right criteria for decision making.

Really great article.

I'm reminded of the (rather unpleasant) story of the boiling frog (put it in hot water = jumps out, put it in cold water and turn on the heat = stays put and dies).

I can think of several areas where I'm feeling a bit stuck .. where I live, some of the work I'm doing. Several things are starting to point to a change ... and this article is another one of those pointers.

I feel like there alot of things in my life that I had to quit: relationships, jobs, etc. I remember the first time I left a job I hated because it turned into being the exact job I did not want. Even though it had only been 6 mos, and I would risk looking like a job hopper, I'm glad I did it. I think as long as you learn from every experience that's what matters.

I really enjoyed reading this post. I agree -- it's never good to waste time on things that no longer bring us happiness. On the other hand, it's important to know that everything (even a sucky job) happens for a reason and there is something to be learned from it. I love the idea that "nothing is wasted." So true!
