To me, deadlines work when you have no choice but to meet the deadline. It's not as complicated as it might seem.

It's really simple. Either you get something done by this deadline or you die (or your dream dies, or your project dies, whatever).

If you don't make the deadline, nothing good will happen for you.

That's my simple analysis of the subject.

I think deadlines are very important to get things done. I try to divide tasks into the smallest chunks possible and create a deadline for each little chunk (even if it's fifteen from now).

It's all about being accountable. A great way for that is to make your deadlines public. Telling one of my friends that I was writing my first book made sure I was forced to check in with him on a regular basis and is probably the only reason I ever got done!

In my case, I'm at my very best whenever I'm minutes away from a deadline. It's when the coveted creative juice oozes and that gets the job done faster and better. Setting deadlines actually gives more room for complacency.

I've noticed that I've gotten really good at "working without a net" and I have to admit I sometimes enjoy (almost) the thrill of the last moment. I feel like this habit has been encouraged and perfected by some of my work environments, but now that I freelance, it's something I'd like to change.

I am the world's worst at deadlines, unless they are TOMORROW. I've always said I thrive under pressure, but that's not really true. I panic and freak out. I mean, I always come through and usually like a champ, but I feel unnecessarily exhausted and older due to the added stress.

Of course, these are usually huge longterm deadlines that I have *not* broken into smaller deadlines along the way, leaving me with one HUGE obstacle to complete the day before and day of...

Thank you for your post... it really details where I still need to work on my time budget (which I am always short on, right?).

Good post. I think it's a good idea to have an extra extra motivation from outside. You can set a lot of deadlines yourself, but if it's just you who knows about them it's easy to be a little less consequent and move them around a bit when you don't make it.

But when you tell somebody else, or do something for somebody else, or put it on your blog or whatever, then you create expectations from others and you will be less tempted to postpone your deadline. It makes your deadline much more real.
