How to Find Peace of Mind in the Modern World

In my opinion this is the biggest problem we face as “modern” people. We might have flashy gadgets and shiny cool things, but in the end when it comes down to peace of mind we have nothing.

I know for me at least whenever I used to come home for the day; I used to always be 90% tense and 10% anxious for reasons I couldn’t understand. I had a house, family, friends and blessings I could never count. I just didn’t understand.

I was stuck in a never ending loop of distress and lack of peace.

So then how did I overcome that?

Well a couple years ago, I learnt a secret.

I was reading through some books when I read the most amazing quote:

Freedom from desire leads to inner peace.
– Lao Tse

This completely changed my beliefs and got me thinking.

Why there is so little peace in the “modern” world is because of too many worldly desires. So in essence the flashy gadgets and shiny cool things I thought were my positives were actually bringing me down.

This brought a revolution in my life.

I stopped worrying about always dressing good, I stopped caring too much about technology, I stopped worrying about having the best of everything.

I started detaching myself from as much as things as possible and my peace of mind right away started going up.

The main thing was that I started to slow my life down. I found through experience that the world was moving way too fast and that it was taking away my peace. There was always better technology; fashion kept on changing and the best things never lasted.

So the only way I could get my peace back was by slowing down and living at my pace.

You can have peace of mind too; you just have to put your mind to it.

Good Luck in living blissfully!

I totally agree! Once you surrender and just see stuff as just that, you begin to live. Not looking or worrying how to pay for the newest thing, your values change and I can only hope to raise my son like this, not to put so much value on objects.

Agree with that. Great post by the way

Sure right, if we detach ourselves from things then we’ll have nothing to worry about – we’ll be at peace.

Hmm…Freedom from the desire to be the best, wouldn’t that mean that we settle for mediocre and would hamper our career path, to the very least?

    Thanks!

It goes back to the attempts of trying to keep up with the ‘Jones’ and as a result, people are never satisfied with what they have in terms of material possessions.  It’s a never ending trap unless you recognize that the peace of mind you suggested is more important.

This is so true! When you finally realize that worrying and being anxious about things only brings more of that type of energy into your life, you can finally say enough and move on, change your thinking and begin to attract what truly makes you happy and peaceful.

I agree with what you are expressing here. The more that we get the more that we want and all we create is an endless loop of dissatisfaction in our lives.

It’s OK to want things but we must realize that the things will never produce long term happiness.

Fantastic article, it made me happy just read it. :-)

I absolutely agree with you. I’m in the process of rearranging my life for maximum inner peace. The world definitely is moving way too fast these days, but we as individuals don’t have to if we really don’t want to.

    Thanks again.

On the other hand, those flashy gizmos didn’t cause any desire or upset.

There is an underlying choice in the mind that thinks it wants all the stuff and that stuff will make us happy. Or we might get rid of things altogether giving us an inflated sense of self over not having things. These images we make are no different that the image of the self that had things.

I do agree, however, that shoveling a load of stuff out is a relief and even kind of fun and exciting.

Isn’t it amazing how all our technology which is supposed to get us “connected” really pulls us out of the present moment and makes us disconnected?  I started to text the guy that lives downstairs from me before I realized that all I had to do was knock on his door.

Peace of mind really resides in those low tech moments.

I totally relate to what you mean. I am passionate about reading, learning, teaching, writing, helping people. I am not concerned with much material goods. I never had to consciously bring a shift though – have always been like this.

Freeing myself and my surroundings from clutter frees up my mind, a mind that is capable of higher thought. Who would want to give this up for flasy things and shiny objects. Not me. Happiness is indeed a state of mind and my mind needs experiences, and not objects to be happy. Cheers

I agree we have to moderate our desire for stuff.  In our modern world we have the opportunity to live in abundance of many stuff, but if we can not manage our stuff, stuff becomes our boss.

peace comes from within, if we try to find it without or outside we would be never satisfied. and to get peace within one has to learn to respond to outer circumstances in a peaceful way. we get disturbed not by external things its our response to the outer world creates the havoc in our life. So first step towards a meaningful & permanent  tranquility is always to watch our own thoughts our own trigger points that causes stress & anger inside us. Then change them with more positive responses.some techniques to help watch our thoughts & change our thinking process here..

Hear ya. It’s definitely the answer. At night, when I sit down to meditate, 1o minutes later, all of the crap that filled my mind and inhibited my ability to think clearly, is gone. Only then can I get back to peace and good mental acuity. The world has it backwards! I say, renewal 5+ times a day!!
