Quite unrealistic. It is not so easy to just find another job, let alone one that give you any kind of emotional, mental or financial rewards. And most definately there are very few bosses who would or could actually change their behavior. Cubicle workers are stuck in the muck. That is reality.

Great piece John. Not every employee has ability to control their work-life balance. Separating work and personal life depends on your attitude towards how you live. Most business types combine the two. There is a great example in the “Personal Boundaries” blog I read from Ronn Torossian.com of 5WPR. He mentions the combination has many rewards.
To be happy at work, you must not only enjoy what you do, but have a good team around you. They may eventually blend into your personal life for the better. For entrepreneurs, it’s good to have your clients and potential clients’ as friends.

Great job John!

Kudoos to the random acts of kindness. That one gets me every time and I always enjoy the rest of my day.

Great interview! I totally agree that enthusiasm grows if you do what you like but then how many of us actually get jobs that we like? Anyways I found this awesome article online dealing with surviving on the job; I strongly recommend checking it otu:

Great interview! I am in the process of struggling to enjoy my 9-5. It's nice to hear such positive ways of dealing with a monotonous job. Keep up the good work.

I agree whole-heartedly that enthusiasm grows when you like what you do. That shows. Once people realize they're in charge of their own happiness, then their approach to work often changes. Job security becomes grounded in a state of mind. As you realize you impact the lives of people around you and the direction of your career, your thoughts and attitude may naturally become far more important.

Great interview John. I especially like the random acts of kindness idea and I will definitely make more of an effort to implement it on a daily basis.
