Great article. I had looked into internet marketing as a way to earn an income, but decided it just wasn’t for me. I didn’t want to be one of those people building annoying sites and sending out spammy emails. Even if I could earn an income from it, something about it just didn’t agree with me.

I agree that relationships are the key to driving any sales effort you undertake.

    Hey Hunter,

“You don’t expect to withdraw money from the bank before you first make a deposit”

I agree with what you said and it works the same for relationship. Sometimes people just try to withdraw the “money” without making a “deposit” and it just don’t make any sense for the “bank” to give them any “money”

    Cheers

Great article and I totally agree. I believe the times of the long sales pages full of hype are coming to an end. I do believe there is plenty of real people out there on the internet giving real value though. In reply to Neil if you have value to share, there is nothing wrong with getting paid for it. As long as the value exceeds the monatary reward, everyone will benefit.

    Hi Hunter,

So this guys comes up to me at a seminar and starts talking about this Multi-Level Marketing (MLM) that he’s involved in. How it’s changed his life, others lives and how it can help me.

After about 5 minutes of listening to this I think to myself, “Who is this guy? Where is he from? Does he have a family?”

All pretty normal questions, you would think. But for this guy it was all about the product instead of getting to know me. He lead with his product instead of himself.

It’s the worst way to do business. If he would have simply related to me, found something in common, I would have probably been more interested in his product. Not because I want his product, but because I know him and trust him.

A friend of mine wrote a 3 page free report on the very same topic. It’s called, Marketing Magic! Just check out my site to learn more.

I think this a difficulty with the internet and blogging. The people reading your stuff are other bloggers in a similar niche. You form relationships with them, but they are not the people that you are really offering your services. Your customers tend to find you through a search engine and rarely stick around to form a bond.

I kind of feel like I’m answering my own question here, but I’ll let this one stand anyway ; )
