5 Tips to Find the Perfect Career for You

These days job dissatisfaction is one of the most common problems among people.

Many people are either dissatisfied with their jobs, hate the tasks they are assigned or  find it boring.

Just ask 10 people on a Sunday night how they feel and you will discover that the majority of them are feeling really bad because they will have to work the next morning.

Yes we all love to have fun and to wake up late but the reason many people hate Mondays is not that they want to rest but it’s because they hate what they are going to do on Monday.

In this post I will tell you about some tips that can help you find the perfect job for you.

5 effective tips for finding the perfect career for you:

1) Know yourself: One of the biggest reasons for job dissatisfaction is that people find themselves doing things that don’t suit their personalities. As a simple example if you are an introvert then certainly working as a sales person or in any job that forces you to interact with dozens of people each day will leave you feeling overwhelmed and under-productive at the end of the day. Understand your personality well to know what career suites you the most.

2) Don’t follow the crowd: The second reason people hate their jobs is that they follow the crowd without really thinking about what they want. A common example is when a person who prefers to work alone find himself in a job that requires team work. Everyone says that team work is amazing but for that specific people team work will lead to job dissatisfaction.

3) Handle unwanted emotions: Sometimes people don’t hate their jobs for the tasks they do but for the emotions they experience while doing the job. For example, some people hate their jobs because of the amounts of stress they experience while doing them. In such a case learning how to handle stress will help you become more satisfied with your job.

4) Find your hobbies and stick to them: The best thing you can ever do for yourself to find a great job is to develop your hobbies and to try to make a career out of them. I used to love computers and psychology very much and that’s why I was very happy to end up running a psychology related internet business.

5) Its ok to change your job: Some people will give you a shocked look when you tell them to change their jobs. What’s the point in sticking to a job that is making you sad while you can take a single step towards a job that can make you live a happier life?? You must weigh the fear of uncertainty of changing careers with the fear of what certainly be a lifetime full of dissatisfaction and frustration by spending the majority of your life at a job that you detest. Do the math.

    Nice Points Farouk,
I have seen lots of people who follow the crowd and end up in dis-satisfaction and regrets about the job they have taken up.

Another thing I would like to mention is, there is no “perfect job”, one has to make it perfect :-) A good employee is one who learns fast and adopts himself to the culture. Of course when things get really bad and the job doesn’t resonates to his personality, then changing the job seems better.

Totally agree with this article.  Too many people end up doing what they ‘can’ do rather than what they ‘want’ to do and they end up grinding it for the rest of their careers.  This is a real shame.  Sometimes the job is okay but the environment or even people there are not the best fit.  So in this case, changing environments is still warranted.  I wish I learned about all this many years ago as I spent over 20 years in corporate life, about 10 years too many for me.

To be truly happy in life, you need to look within yourself to figure out what will satisfy you – don’t choose a career that will make someone else proud. What do YOU want to do with your life? What do YOU want to do every day? Remember, you are the one that has to wake up every day and work that job – not the person you are trying to impress. If it makes you feel guilty to choose a career that doesn’t make someone in your life happy, work on affirmations to help you build your self-esteem and learn to love yourself for who you are…you need approval from yourself before you need it from anyone else…

    Hey Farouk,
You are right, so many people are unhappy with their current jobs. I agree that we need to do work that is in alignment with who we are.

    Hey Farouk, great article.

This part in particular resonated with me: “As a simple example if you are an introvert then certainly working as a sales person or in any job that forces you to interact with dozens of people each day will leave you feeling overwhelmed and under-productive at the end of the day.”

I can remember working in a crappy office job for a long time, where I was constantly forced to be more social than I wanted to be answering phones. I quickly got burned out and began to hate it.

As it turns out, blogging is much more conducive to my happiness. :)

I had to leave the “hunt for a job” scene a long time ago. Being an entrepreneur is just too much fun. It gives you so much more flexibility and the ability to be as creative as you want. Love it!

A wonderful article Farouk, thanks for sharing it with us!

I actually think you summed it up on the first point! If you know yourself, then you’ll know which direction to walk down. And you can decide which sort of career you’d like to undertake.

“Know thyself” – simple and beautiful :-)

Yes, to Know Yourself is the biggest key and also the hardest. Very few of us understand the elements that would make up the right career for ourselves. It is hard to understand WHY we like or dislike an activity.  We have to get that. Then we can break it down into elements that we can look for in a job.

I disagree with your assertion that a sales position isn’t right for an introvert. Because an introvert is often a great listener and a thoughtful speaker. He can zero in on what it is the customer wants or the reason he is hesitant.  Diane Sawyer is an introvert and she certainly interacts with many people. You just need to know how to pace yourself, what your limits are.

It should all start with passion. People think that all there is to a career is to just earn money. Without passion, people tend to easy burn out the longer they stay in a career that they are not very passionate about.

      that’s right Charlie

    Great post, Farouk!

I would like add a 6 point: focus on what you really love to do in your current job. It will help you to learn yourself, not follow the crow and balancing your emotions about your job. I found that by doing so, I my job  became more what I loved to do.

    Thanks for sharing!

You are absolutely right. A lot of people tend to forget that they can quit a job they hate (and never see their “beloved” boss again). They are probably afraid that they will not be able to find another one – especially if they are young and do not have much work experience and/or a fancy CV.

But I mean – it is not that difficult to (at the very least) start looking for a better deal. Many companies post new jobs on a daily basis; the only obstacle is usually lack of knowledge on how to find these offers.

As for me, I find for example Graduateland extremely useful (http://graduateland.com/ref/blogger1) for seeing “what is out there”. It helps me filter what sort of a job would suit me the best once I finish my studies – and I am afraid that not many people have ever tried anything of this kind.

I agree with the hobbies point, pick something that you are happy to do without being paid a single dime for it and then make it into you career. :) Often you are also good at the things you enjoy doing the most, or you can train some more. Can’t go wrong.

    Hi Farouk,

Great points above…I feel that the reason many people have hard time finding passion is because they haven’t explored what there purpose is in life. When you focus in internal growth, you will gain full awareness of  how you are feeling and you will also be able to catch the negative emotions that arise..Many people’s emotions are on auto pilot most of the time and they don’t realize it…

I also think most people follow the crowd because their ego gets in the way and they feel like they have to follow the crowd to get ahead in life..When you follow your own values in life success may take longer but it is more precious becasue you are living life on your terms:)…

    Thanks for sharing Farouk!

    Cheers,
    Nabil

A town with not many jobs available… It sounds like your options are limited…Then you need to start thinking differently…The job won’t come to you, you need to find it. Talk to your parents and their friends, your neighbors and local business people. Say that you are looking for a job to earn money for college. Put the word out there, advertise yourself as a prospective employee. Make up a flyer and hand it to people, pass them around your neighborhood. Say exactly what you are looking for … that you are willing to work hard.
Offer to do whatever work it is you want to do, such as :
Computer work, Data Input, Babysit, Mow Lawns, Pull Weeds, Clean Garages, Organize Cupboards, File Papers, Wash Cars, Walk Dogs, whatever…
Say on the flyer you are a High School Graduate looking to earn money to go to college, and be sure to say you are available to work on Saturdays too.

I have a comment about the know yourself point. Sometimes finding a perfect career is about learning about yourself. We don’t often know what we want, or what suits us until we try it out. Then we can determine what we like, what we don’t like, and learn that no job is perfect like farouk mentions or this article mentions:
    http://clevergems.com/happiness-at-work-strategies-and-wisdom-about-finding-the-perfect-job/

What is more important, is finding a job that is “right” for us and lets you spend the majority of your time doing tasks that you enjoy.
