Diggy, thanks for the inspirational article. I truly enjoyed it. One of the best reasons was Nelson Mandela. I need to watch his movie! It’s encouraging to see your writing spreading out across the net, because it’s great stuff :)

    #13 Believe In Your Dreams
It’s really relevant- you need to give your dreams a chance- either by pursuing it on part time basis, etc. Many people become gradually disengaged when the let their lifelong dreams go in pursuit of money and title. It’s sad- when their world falls apart, there’s nothing to fall back on and they suffer from depression or mental trauma.
I left a successful life and give my dreams a chance- and I’ve never been happier. No regrets

Thanks for this inspiring post. I don’t think I can agree with the Kanye West part. He just doesn’t seem like a very nice person. I’m not familiar with his story but he kinda turns me off with his behavior.
Anyway, I just want to add that so many people will try and pull us down intentionally or unintentionally. And sometimes, these people are our friends and family, people who are closest to us. It’s important that you yourself encourage yourself because no one else will. Believing in yourself is the first step.
Any endeavor, first step is always the hardest. http://budurl.com/fuu5 is an inspirational article to build up your self-esteem to be able to encourage yourself.

    Hey Megan!
Yeah Kanye does have an attitude and maybe the success went to his head. What is inspiring about him though is that he was broke and poor and managed to work his way up from a nobody to everybody knowing his name!:)

The best victories are through sacrifice. This article was very encouraging to hang on in there until it’s all said and done. We do sometimes give up on ourselves and plans right before the blessing. But I will indeed keep the things mentioned above in mind whenever my flesh wants to jump ship from the plan and vision of success.

  • http://www.mastery-journey.com outstanding

can never give up because there are billions of people around the world who don’t give up. I have no right to give up when a child wakes up everyday to severe poverty, not knowing where his breakfast might come from, or even if he will have any breakfast, or lunch, or dinner. Yet he wakes up anyway. Hopeful that with every passing day, with every passing hour, it is an hour, and a day that will move him closer to a better life.

Billions of people around the world wake up to this situation, and never give up; I can never give up. I have no right to give up. You can never give up. It would be an insult to the millions of unknown strugglers if I were to even contemplate the thought of giving up. I could have easily been with them, rather than where I am now. I could have been in their position, and they could be walking in my shoes, with the abundance of opportunities at my fingertips. I owe it to them, to show them what is possible, and to show them that their strength, and their will, and their determination to survive and to strive is a force that will take them to their dreams. I will never give up because they will never give up. And you should never give up

I love Kanye West. His album art for Graduation was AMAZING. I had it ordered like 9 months in advance. He’s big headed but so what :) . I think giving up and quitting are 2 things that are different and some people struggle to comprehend that.

“Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.”

Indeed sometimes we really take negative words to heart and allow it hurts us. But we gotta let people say what they need to say and see if we can pick any single helpful points there, if none then we just go ahead with our stubborn heads stick more stiff, that’s more cool right? :P

Perfect list. Although, you should have added Derek Redmond, he is a paradigm of never giving up. Despite having broken one of his leg tissue’s during a race, he still got up, and hobbled his way to the end of the race.

Diggy, thx alot for all the inspiration and perfect examples in your article. I exactly know how it feels if you see no real solution and want to give up. I was at this point years ago (at a time when access to the internet was not very common). A little book with reasons similar to those provided in your article helped me alot.

Rudolf Hess – 46 years in jail, prisoner of peace, never gave up… So much so that ZOG killed him, an inspiration and a reason to live. Whatever your religion, politics never give up.. Hail Rudolf Hess a true hero and martyr… Nelson Mandela! A killer turned into a saint, but still a killer…

Thank you so much for this post. The successful people I have met didn’t quit. They kept moving up that hill and wouldn’t stop. For me, I want to leave the world a better place. Yes, I’m in my 30s and legacy is important.

Every birthday I make a list of my accomplishments of the previous year. And then I list my goals.

Nelson Mandela is an inspiration. He was kind to those who hurt him. And generous with his support.

  • J.L.

Nice list. But you should have added Walt Disney to it. All throughout his career people continually underestimated him, tried to undercut him, told him that what he wanted to do couldn’t be done, and at one point he lost the cartoon character he had worked so hard to make famous to an unscrupulous producer. The result of that last disaster led to the birth of Mickey Mouse – because no matter what happened, Walt wouldn’t give up. He was a man of principle and faith in himself and humanity in general. He’s always been a great inspiration to me.

    Great Post,

But #6 is incorrect. He actually ran 40KM from Marathon to Athens. 40KM is 26 miles, the current distance of the marathon. 240KM is around 130 miles. Very few people would be able to accomplish that today, even ultra-marthoners. Everything else is very inspirational.

  • Justin

I dont agree. Half of your “reasons” are hand picked examples of individual people. sure, MJ, Mandela, Kanye, that guy from pursuit of happyness all made it despite facing adversity. what you miss, the # one reason why 99% of people should give up on their dreams, is all of the people who work hard and dream and get nowhere. You know kanye? there are thousands of kaynes still on the street. the one who made it out, good for him. but you cant make an example out of one person, or any handful of people. The vasy majority of people have dreams that they simply cannot achieve. Thats a fact. If every person who had a dream could get it, we would have alot more people doing the same thing out there. If anyone disagrees with me, please make your case. Im not saying there is anything wrong with trying. I am saying that at some point we all must face reality, to thine own self be true.

  • Aldiouma

Thanks a lot. you helped me a lot today. May God bless you.

  • Tremlo

@Justin – You learn things & grow on the quest … making you better/stronger, more than average. In essence, maybe you don’t reach the ultimate dream but you find yourself & land in a better a spot than you would have been. A spot higher than any norm could understand. Then again, maybe you win. Maybe you win big by putting yourself there. I know where I’m from – nobody’s really working hard or trying. Everyone is in line. At the end of the day, facing reality is just that – trying to take control of your own life; whether people face their own reality & leave me out of it is of no consequence.

There’s room for those like us out there … always will be.

Thanks for the post, it was very inspiring. We need to read stuff like this to keep us moving towards our goal. We need information to educate and remind us that our journey will not be easy but if we don’t quit we can accomplish just about anything.

Life is fun because of the ups and downs. If we can stay motivated and determined to reach our goals no matter what, then life will keep giving us hints and solutions to all of our problems.

As far as the Kanye West thing; no one is going to say and do the right thing all of the time so we can’t totally discount his good qualities. Take what you can learn from people and ignore the rest. I am sure he has learned from his mistakes.

  • Lance Hostetter

Good examples of those who worked hard. Just wonder about #20? Are we stating that success = happiness? Are the “successful people” you have mentioned happy? As a Christian I’m called to service and holiness over my own personal happiness. Happiness and contentment are gifts from God that we can never achieve by ourselves. Read Ecclesiastes 1-2 Peace

  • shujaa

thank you very much incredible topic.

  • Cyn

While I appreciated the intent of this article, I found the very first point discouraging and a little disheartening as it is seemingly geared toward encouraging only those people who are “healthy and free” to keep trying. I myself have been facing a lot of health issues, and can tell you we need more strength and reminders not to give up more than the average person. When first reading the article, I believed Muhammed Ali was being cited as an example not only his because of his athletic prowess, but also his strength in facing adversity, medical or political (his fight against conscription in the Vietnam War). When continuing to read, I instead found the focus lied only on his athletic accomplishments. This greatly detracted from the article, and incongruent with the Lance Armstrong example also cited. Furthermore, I do not think that any freedom fighters, whether they be in Egypt, Libya, or elsewhere feel less inspired because they do not live in a “free” nation. If anything, their lack of freedom has greatly inspired them (for better or worse) to continue fighting for their cause. Lastly, I understand that everyone draws their inspiration from different sources. However, I don’t think Michael Jordan or the other specific individuals listed are reasons in and of themselves to not give up. Perhaps the title of the headings could have been changed to be consistent; inspiring individuals could have been listed with a main idea behind their life story, or a meaningful question/statement with an inpsiring individual cited in support could have been noted. This is just my two cents…

  • karen

Love isn’t this simple. It’s not a physical thing where determination or resilience or whatever helps. It’s either there or it’s not. In my life, it’s not. Everyone you’ve listed is famous…and there’s a reason they’re famous: because they’re the exceptions. The only truth in this is number 16, which only makes things worse…

how many times should you attempt before giving up? for example there are dreams that are nearly unattainable and you sacrifice so much of your life to get these goals. It hard to keep saying I will continue to torture myself for a dream and then regret wasting time for it. to be practical how many times should you try to find another way to your dreams before giving up?

  • Lin

I don’t agree with the first one. Healthy and alive… You can be unhealthy(accident) and alive.

I had a bad motorcycle accident, never to be able to walk again. 5 broken ribs, internal bleeding. My skin was opened in many places. Instead of staying at hospital, I forced them to take me home. I rested 1 day but refused to die. After 2 days, of leg stretches (that were very painful) I forced myself on a motorcycle, road past my accident scene. I returned home then I managed to walk 1.5 km, drink 2 beers, and walk home. It was considered impossible. I was not currently healthy at the time as I had substantial injuries.

I remember the walk there. I was pressing my stomach region to keep my organs from moving.

I remember the walk home, I was saying to myself. I know the rules, but I am compelled to disobey (Matrix 2). I am alive today because I refused to listen to the experts and because I knew I am strong enough to fight for survival.

  • Lin

Oh and the funniest part that my friends remember, is me standing in front of the mirror keeping my broken nose straight. Asking everyone “Is it straight?” And sometimes those little things inspire others.

He even admitted that he was so harassed and hated by people that he had to leave the mainland and go live in Hawaii for a fee years..

I know this may be old and late, but if you guys don’t like one of the inspiring role models Mr. Diggy put in that list of his/hers, then simply just replace it with one of your own inspiring figures! Diggy isn’t telling you who to look up to, just providing some examples of his/her own inspiring models. Diggy is showing us that we should remember those who inspire us to keep going on in life, not necessarily telling us that we should have the exact inspiring models that he has. If I’m wrong, forgive me please! Haha, hope you all have a nice night!
