giving up

22 Reasons To Never Give Up

At some point in the various journeys we embark on in our lives, we get to a part where we feel like giving up. Sometimes we give up before we even start and other times we give up just before we are about to make that huge break-through that we have been putting so much effort in to achieve.

I have created this list of 22 reasons why you should never give up and I hope that you will find it before you give up, so that I can inspire you to keep going!

1- As Long As You Are Alive Anything Is Possible
The only valid excuse you have to give up is if you are dead. As long as you are alive (and healthy and free) you have the choice to keep trying until you finally succeed.

2- Be Realistic
The chance of mastering something the first time you do it is almost non-existent. Everything takes time to learn and you will make mistakes. Learn from them.

3- Michael Jordan
Arguably the best basketball player of all time. He attributes his success to all his failures. He just never gave up even when he knew he had missed over 300 shots and had missed the  winning shot of the game many times. Every time he got knocked down he got back up again.

4- Lance Armstrong
Lance was diagnosed with serious cancer that had spread throughout his entire body. He had cancer cells the size of golf balls in his lungs. Despite all odds he overcame the cancer and set out to win the Tour de France 6 Consecutive years in a row.

5- Muhammad Ali
“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Muhammad Ali is one of the best boxers the world has ever known. He suffered only 5 losses while having 56 wins and was the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times. This is a guy who literally knows how to get knocked down and get back up.

6- The Man Who Created The Marathon
Very long ago an Athenian herald was sent to Sparta to get help when the Persians landed in Greece. It was said that he ran 240km in 2 days and after that he ran 40km to announce the victory of the Greeks only to collapse and die on the spot from exhaustion. If you ever feel like things are difficult, imagine what it would be like to run 240km in 2 days. (Don’t try that because you might die from it, but use it as an inspiration).

7- Chris Gardner – The Pursuit of Happiness
Have you seen the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness”? It is based on the life story of Chris Gardener, a man who went for the lowest of the lows in an environment where most people would give up (no money, no job) to the highest of the highs (A millionaire with his own investment firm). If you ever think about giving up, watch this movie!

8- Kanye West
I’m pretty sure you have heard of the rapper Kanye West. Read his story. He is a big inspiration for me and proves that you can go from having very little to being among the most famous and respected people in the world.

9- Nelson Mandela
Campaigned for justice and freedom in his South Africa. Spent 20 years in jail for his opposition to apartheid. On release he healed the wounds of apartheid by his magnanimous attitude toward his former political enemies.

10- You Are Strong
You are stronger than you think. One little setback is not enough to stop you from achieving your goals. Neither are 10 or 100 or 1000 setbacks.

11- Prove Yourself
You don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up.

12- Has It Been Done Before?
If someone else can do it then so can you. Even if it is only one other person in the world that has achieved what you have set out to achieve, that should be reason enough for you to never give up.

13- Believe In Your Dreams
Don’t sell yourself short. In life there are going to be many people who will try to bring you down and tell you what you want to achieve is not possible. Don’t let anyone destroy your dreams.

14- Your Family and Friends.
Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a different angle, study more or practice more but don’t give up!

15- Because I Tell You To.
Not that I am any sort of guru or Godly figure, but if you want to give up then don’t. Just because I’m telling you not to.

16- There Are People Worse-Off
Right now there are many people who are in a worse situation and environment than you are right now. Are you thinking about giving up running 5 miles a week? Think about the people who are unable to even walk and how much they would give to be able to run 5 miles every day.

17- Improve Our World
When you achieve whatever you set out to achieve you can use your success to make a difference to the world or other peoples lives.

18- Get Rich or Die Trying
Like Fiddy (50 cent) says, “Get rich or die trying”. 50 Cent is rich, he made it (although he did get shot 9 times). Face your fears and don’t take the easy way out by giving up.

19- Let The Haters Hate
There will always be haters. There will always be plenty of naysayers  and people who try to tear you down. Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.

20- You Deserve To Be Happy
Don’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have success. Keep that mindset and never give up until you reach your destination!

21- Inspire Others
Be an inspiration to others by refusing to give up. Who knows what someone else can achieve because you never gave up and in turn inspired them not to give up.

22- You Are So Close
Often when you feel like you want to give up and you are about to give up you are so close to making a huge break-thru. Seth Godin has written an awesome book about this called “The Dip” – a riveting read that teaches that at any given time you are always just a heartbeat away from success.

P.S. NEVER GIVE UP!

    #13 Believe In Your Dreams
It’s really relevant- you need to give your dreams a chance- either by pursuing it on part time basis, etc. Many people become gradually disengaged when the let their lifelong dreams go in pursuit of money and title. It’s sad- when their world falls apart, there’s nothing to fall back on and they suffer from depression or mental trauma.
I left a successful life and give my dreams a chance- and I’ve never been happier. No regrets

Thanks for this inspiring post. I don’t think I can agree with the Kanye West part. He just doesn’t seem like a very nice person. I’m not familiar with his story but he kinda turns me off with his behavior.
Anyway, I just want to add that so many people will try and pull us down intentionally or unintentionally. And sometimes, these people are our friends and family, people who are closest to us. It’s important that you yourself encourage yourself because no one else will. Believing in yourself is the first step.
Any endeavor, first step is always the hardest. http://budurl.com/fuu5 is an inspirational article to build up your self-esteem to be able to encourage yourself.

    • Dirk de Bruin

      Hey Megan!
Yeah Kanye does have an attitude and maybe the success went to his head. What is inspiring about him though is that he was broke and poor and managed to work his way up from a nobody to everybody knowing his name!:)

The best victories are through sacrifice. This article was very encouraging to hang on in there until it’s all said and done. We do sometimes give up on ourselves and plans right before the blessing. But I will indeed keep the things mentioned above in mind whenever my flesh wants to jump ship from the plan and vision of success.

    Kanye West is a jerk.

  • http://www.mastery-journey.com outstanding

can never give up because there are billions of people around the world who don’t give up. I have no right to give up when a child wakes up everyday to severe poverty, not knowing where his breakfast might come from, or even if he will have any breakfast, or lunch, or dinner. Yet he wakes up anyway. Hopeful that with every passing day, with every passing hour, it is an hour, and a day that will move him closer to a better life.

Billions of people around the world wake up to this situation, and never give up; I can never give up. I have no right to give up. You can never give up. It would be an insult to the millions of unknown strugglers if I were to even contemplate the thought of giving up. I could have easily been with them, rather than where I am now. I could have been in their position, and they could be walking in my shoes, with the abundance of opportunities at my fingertips. I owe it to them, to show them what is possible, and to show them that their strength, and their will, and their determination to survive and to strive is a force that will take them to their dreams. I will never give up because they will never give up. And you should never give up

I love Kanye West. His album art for Graduation was AMAZING. I had it ordered like 9 months in advance. He’s big headed but so what :). I think giving up and quitting are 2 things that are different and some people struggle to comprehend that.

“Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.”

Indeed sometimes we really take negative words to heart and allow it hurts us. But we gotta let people say what they need to say and see if we can pick any single helpful points there, if none then we just go ahead with our stubborn heads stick more stiff, that’s more cool right? :P

Diggy, thx alot for all the inspiration and perfect examples in your article. I exactly know how it feels if you see no real solution and want to give up. I was at this point years ago (at a time when access to the internet was not very common). A little book with reasons similar to those provided in your article helped me alot.

Never give up! It’s so true!

Rudolf Hess – 46 years in jail, prisoner of peace, never gave up… So much so that ZOG killed him, an inspiration and a reason to live. Whatever your religion, politics never give up.. Hail Rudolf Hess a true hero and martyr… Nelson Mandela! A killer turned into a saint, but still a killer…

Thank you so much for this post. The successful people I have met didn’t quit. They kept moving up that hill and wouldn’t stop. For me, I want to leave the world a better place. Yes, I’m in my 30s and legacy is important.

Every birthday I make a list of my accomplishments of the previous year. And then I list my goals.

Nelson Mandela is an inspiration. He was kind to those who hurt him. And generous with his support.

  • J.L.

Nice list. But you should have added Walt Disney to it. All throughout his career people continually underestimated him, tried to undercut him, told him that what he wanted to do couldn’t be done, and at one point he lost the cartoon character he had worked so hard to make famous to an unscrupulous producer. The result of that last disaster led to the birth of Mickey Mouse – because no matter what happened, Walt wouldn’t give up. He was a man of principle and faith in himself and humanity in general. He’s always been a great inspiration to me.

  • http://www.pickthebrain.com/blog/22-reasons-to-never-give-up/#respond Michael

    Great Post,

But #6 is incorrect. He actually ran 40KM from Marathon to Athens. 40KM is 26 miles, the current distance of the marathon. 240KM is around 130 miles. Very few people would be able to accomplish that today, even ultra-marthoners. Everything else is very inspirational.

  • Justin

I dont agree. Half of your “reasons” are hand picked examples of individual people. sure, MJ, Mandela, Kanye, that guy from pursuit of happyness all made it despite facing adversity. what you miss, the # one reason why 99% of people should give up on their dreams, is all of the people who work hard and dream and get nowhere. You know kanye? there are thousands of kaynes still on the street. the one who made it out, good for him. but you cant make an example out of one person, or any handful of people. The vasy majority of people have dreams that they simply cannot achieve. Thats a fact. If every person who had a dream could get it, we would have alot more people doing the same thing out there. If anyone disagrees with me, please make your case. Im not saying there is anything wrong with trying. I am saying that at some point we all must face reality, to thine own self be true.

  • Aldiouma

Thanks a lot. you helped me a lot today. May God bless you.

  • Tremlo

@Justin – You learn things & grow on the quest … making you better/stronger, more than average. In essence, maybe you don’t reach the ultimate dream but you find yourself & land in a better a spot than you would have been. A spot higher than any norm could understand. Then again, maybe you win. Maybe you win big by putting yourself there. I know where I’m from – nobody’s really working hard or trying. Everyone is in line. At the end of the day, facing reality is just that – trying to take control of your own life; whether people face their own reality & leave me out of it is of no consequence.

There’s room for those like us out there … always will be.

Thanks for the post, it was very inspiring. We need to read stuff like this to keep us moving towards our goal. We need information to educate and remind us that our journey will not be easy but if we don’t quit we can accomplish just about anything.

Life is fun because of the ups and downs. If we can stay motivated and determined to reach our goals no matter what, then life will keep giving us hints and solutions to all of our problems.

As far as the Kanye West thing; no one is going to say and do the right thing all of the time so we can’t totally discount his good qualities. Take what you can learn from people and ignore the rest. I am sure he has learned from his mistakes.

  • Lance Hostetter

Good examples of those who worked hard. Just wonder about #20? Are we stating that success = happiness? Are the “successful people” you have mentioned happy? As a Christian I’m called to service and holiness over my own personal happiness. Happiness and contentment are gifts from God that we can never achieve by ourselves. Read Ecclesiastes 1-2 Peace

  • shujaa

thank you very much incredible topic.

  • Cyn

While I appreciated the intent of this article, I found the very first point discouraging and a little disheartening as it is seemingly geared toward encouraging only those people who are “healthy and free” to keep trying. I myself have been facing a lot of health issues, and can tell you we need more strength and reminders not to give up more than the average person. When first reading the article, I believed Muhammed Ali was being cited as an example not only his because of his athletic prowess, but also his strength in facing adversity, medical or political (his fight against conscription in the Vietnam War). When continuing to read, I instead found the focus lied only on his athletic accomplishments. This greatly detracted from the article, and incongruent with the Lance Armstrong example also cited. Furthermore, I do not think that any freedom fighters, whether they be in Egypt, Libya, or elsewhere feel less inspired because they do not live in a “free” nation. If anything, their lack of freedom has greatly inspired them (for better or worse) to continue fighting for their cause. Lastly, I understand that everyone draws their inspiration from different sources. However, I don’t think Michael Jordan or the other specific individuals listed are reasons in and of themselves to not give up. Perhaps the title of the headings could have been changed to be consistent; inspiring individuals could have been listed with a main idea behind their life story, or a meaningful question/statement with an inpsiring individual cited in support could have been noted. This is just my two cents…

  • karen

i am inspired by this tips you have. I will never give up because there are still people who believes that i can do it. And I also believe in myself that I can achieve what I wanted. :))

Your article was working until #8 Kayne West that ungrateful POS, if everyone acted like him our whole human race would be wiped out in years too come… Please rethink having him as any kinda inspiration, Unless your just ok with getting on the top and just forgetting the small people that put  you on the top.

    • AD

You need to dig deeper.  Study black history.  Study previous president’s actions.  More importantly, study what the current republicans want to do with FEMA which has been doing a good job on the current hurricanes and all relevant issues.  Kanye is quick to react which shows a form of ignorance, but dig for the truth and then get back at me.  NHG

      • Roadkillzilla

There is absolutely no reason to “Dig Deeper” when it comes to someone as “Shallow” as  Kayne West.

While I can appreciate your invitation to study History. It’s apparent that some will never learn no matter how much they study. If you yourself were to dig deeper into history, you will clearly see that it  teaches the inevitable fall of those who seek fame and fortune for all the wrong reasons.

Ever heard of the words “Humility”, “Respect” or “Gratefulness”.

        • Zzhiva

I looked up Kanye’s childhood in the Wiki, I am not sure how he would qualify as having very little and grew up struggling. His parents divorced, but his mom was a English professor at Chicago University.

    • Marlon Smith

I believe the author is speaking about how he achieved his success; not about how he chose to use it. I am not saying that his actions/character is irrelevant. I only believe it is irrelevant to this topic.

    • Roadkillzilla

I agree, Kayne West may have struggled in life, but clearly his struggles were motivated by greed (for money, status, power, etc.)….. His demeanor makes this blatantly obvious.

Ethically and Morally – Inspiration and/or Reasons to Never Give Up….  Should “NEVER” be Motivated by any Form of Greed.

Love isn’t this simple. It’s not a physical thing where determination or resilience or whatever helps. It’s either there or it’s not. In my life, it’s not. Everyone you’ve listed is famous…and there’s a reason they’re famous: because they’re the exceptions. The only truth in this is number 16, which only makes things worse…

THe part about as long as you are healthy and free is the best gift in life.  I am no longer healthy and wish I had valued my health while I had it.  I think all humans tend to take this for granted until they lose it.  If you have your health, you have everything.

how many times should you attempt before giving up? for example there are dreams that are nearly unattainable and you sacrifice so much of your life to get these goals. It hard to keep saying I will continue to torture myself for a dream and then regret wasting time for it. to be practical how many times should you try to find another way to your dreams before giving up?

    • Matt

Get a pencil and paper.  Draw a horizontal line.  The left point of the line is when you were born.  The right point of the line is when you will turn 100.  Draw segments that represent your quality of life during certain phases of your cognitive and personal development. i.e.  1-5  growth and learning [fun] 6-13 Played and went to school [fun] 14-18 studied hard and started working [ok] 19-65 work years [sucked] 66-85 work cont’d due to not enough retirement [sucked] (only 5% of people achieve retirement goals)  86-100 diminution of body [sucked].  It’s like monopoly, if you are at a point where the rest of the game is going to suck as you slowly lose, then you can either quit playing or watch your pathetic savings dwindle away while trying to hold some entertaining conversation with the other losers.

  • Lin

I don’t agree with the first one. Healthy and alive… You can be unhealthy(accident) and alive.

I had a bad motorcycle accident, never to be able to walk again. 5 broken ribs, internal bleeding. My skin was opened in many places. Instead of staying at hospital, I forced them to take me home. I rested 1 day but refused to die. After 2 days, of leg stretches (that were very painful) I forced myself on a motorcycle, road past my accident scene. I returned home then I managed to walk 1.5 km, drink 2 beers, and walk home. It was considered impossible. I was not currently healthy at the time as I had substantial injuries.

I remember the walk there. I was pressing my stomach region to keep my organs from moving.

I remember the walk home, I was saying to myself. I know the rules, but I am compelled to disobey (Matrix 2). I am alive today because I refused to listen to the experts and because I knew I am strong enough to fight for survival.

    • dagnytaggartoh

Oh and the funniest part that my friends remember, is me standing in front of the mirror keeping my broken nose straight. Asking everyone “Is it straight?” And sometimes those little things inspire others.

Kanye West is one of the most respected people in the world?? hahaha Kanye is a fucking joke and has been dissed ever since the rude, obnoxious abnd mean thing he did to Taylor Swift. He even admitted that he was so harassed and hated by people that he had to leave the mainland and go live in Hawaii for a fee years..

  • Anon

I know this may be old and late, but if you guys don’t like one of the inspiring role models Mr. Diggy put in that list of his/hers, then simply just replace it with one of your own inspiring figures! Diggy isn’t telling you who to look up to, just providing some examples of his/her own inspiring models. Diggy is showing us that we should remember those who inspire us to keep going on in life, not necessarily telling us that we should have the exact inspiring models that he has. If I’m wrong, forgive me please! Haha, hope you all have a nice night!

You are standing on the edge of a cliff will you jump or be pushed? The ideological difference is minimal. Nobody cares about anything or anyone but themselves.

    • Slim60

Before jumping Think about those who can’t walk to a cliff like you do let alone jumping from it. They suffer every day and they can’t even scream and nobody is allowed to assist them in killing themselves. It is called the locked in syndrome.

Is your situation worse than that? If not then there is always a better tomorrow waiting for you as long as there is enough heart beats in you. You just don’t know when it happens. If you’ve got your health, a roof over your head, a fridge full of food, and clean running water from the tap you are one of the lucky 30% in this world. You should be grateful for it. What you don’t have, see it as a luxury that few other people can afford, but you can do without it.

The best things in life are free, I wish a holiday to Fiji was in that list.

Who wants to take the hits?  Who wants life to keep knocking them down at every turn, just so they have to struggle to get up again?  What’s the good in that?  Unfortunately, we are often forced to suppress our dignity and self-integrity in order to deal with the incessant miscelany of hardships life delivers day in and day out.  Sooner or later, one must come to terms with this question: will I go on just because, or do I have a reason?

I’ve always struggled when it comes to being determined to just keep at it – with my goals. Until recently. I now realise that life is hard, but that doesn’t mean that people can’t live life on their terms. Love the ‘Let the Haters, hate’ point- I use it as motivation to always do better.

  • David

I know your post pleases many readers and I’m sure you mean well. There are a lot of people out there who have good reasons to give up. Do you have any idea what financial distress is like? Your hand are tied and your verey survival is questionable. Those you owe money to only care about that. Do you know what it’s like to suffer from depression? Do you know what it’s like to be unable to fulfill your dreams because you’re simply not good at them? Do you know what it’s like to be getting older with no past to look back on and no imaginable future? Do you know what it’s like to have no support system because  people can’t fill your deep inner emptiness? You don’t know me so it does’nt matter. Your life is fine and people like what you write. Just kn are people like me out there for whom your writings are full of false hope. I’m sure you’ll ignore this.

    • Jo

so what do you want the guy to say?  I too suffer from depression.  I can’t bear to look at the past as it’s a life wasted.  Everyday is a battle, but it’s a battle I will fight and win.  What is the alternative?

      • lame

        Kill yourself

        • Vineel, India

Exactly. Everyday, i wanna kill myself. If i ever meet God, i would ask, “Why the fuck do i have to suffer???? WHYY?????” Doesn’t make sense, you know. Just jump from a cliff.

I have maintained a high level of motivation my entire 34 years on this planet and received acknowledgement for excellence in many things that I’ve done.  I know I can do anything that I put my mind to.  I am fatigued from struggling to live a meager existence and escape the working class, so I live with daily regret that I was ever born.  I am in a situation where the world values me, but I feel isolated and born out of my time.  I have friends and hobbies, but I am disenchanted with the jobs I must hold in order to keep a minimal, clean and healthy standard of living.  As the book Outliers suggests, we are all exposed to different opportunities.  As I have tried to improve my situation, my progress appears to be very slow.  It seems that I will work well into my seventies.  This is not the life I want.  Let’s face it, sometimes you’re just dealt a bad hand and there’s nothing you can do but bluff.  My life is a lie.

    • looser

Yup, You should give up !!!!

      • Vineel, India

        Looser, Your’e totally right.
Alright People, i might sound dumb, but here’s my idea. LET’S ALL GIVE UP TOGETHER. Lets jump in an ocean, or shoot ourselves in the brain. If all the SEVEN BILLION PEOPLE DIE TOGETHER, then God would get pissed off, and might create a new universe where there would be no suffering. PICTURE THAT.

        • Brigitte

          India,
I think you need Jesus! and a big hug. Things can’t be that bad in your life that you would say such damming things to anyone, not to mention to think those types of things within your heart. I’m going to pray for you and believe that God will satisfy your every need. You deserve it!!!

#16 is an obsolete and useless inspiration because this
statement cannot and shall not be true since the person claimed this statement
does not know 100% inside and out about the people he or she is referring about
their stories. #16 is concluded by a shallow thinker and an apathetic person!
Therefore, to make your life tips better, please delete #16 since it is not an
inspiration to the human mind, heart, and soul, it is an insult to the human

There are good gamblers and bad gamblers.  But if you never gamble you will never have money and always be working for someone else.  See, you have to take a gamble on investments to make money.   Most people have a problem with making money.  If you have a hundred dollars in your pocket do you save it for food for the next week or do you try to make more with your hundred if it’s your last hundred.  Be a Gambler who gambles on investments.  If you invest in ten companys and three do well.  You are rich and done.  It’s that easy to make money and if you never try you will never have.  Any of it.  I just want everybody to get rich with me.  It’s so hard to get through to you people.

  • EBiz

Before Kanye West hit it big, he struggled to get his name out there.  Just as he was about to get ahead in the music biz, he was involved in a bad car accident.  He had to have his mouth wired shut to reset his jaw.  A week or two after having his mouth wired, he went into the studio to drop “Through the Wire”, where he raps about his accident and how he overcome it.   His mouth was still wired when he created this song.   A lesson can be learned from Kanye in his early days.  When faced with a bad situation, you can either let it derail you or let it motivate you to get back on track.

Give up and do what?  For me, giving up is impossible, I keep doing what I do and don’t give up even if I feel bad.  It’s like I can’t stop, even if I wanted to.  I can say I quit as much as I want, but the reality is I keep moving forward and don’t quit.

This was actually really good.  Yes, I know people don’t like Kanye West (including me), but I can see past that.  I had some crushing news this weekend and was mulling over the “is life worth living” thing.  Some of the comments I’ve seen are just from flamer/haters.  These venomous people have chosen to be worthless, so don’t let them bring you down.  Life can be seen as a valley of sorrows and an odyssey of pain.  Some people, who can’t fight that, just decide they want to be on the winning side, no matter how bleak that may be.  It’s so EASY to follow that path.  Let’s be different.  Let’s spit in the eye of failure and hopelessness.  I know the odds favor these things.  That’s why it’s so cool showing despair the finger.  Is the joy of falling in love or seeing one of your children (or grandchildren) born or graduate worth years of pain and disappointment?  Actually, yes, it is.  Is it worth it if you can raise up one other person?  I think it is.

You posted something positive which actually helped me.  If other people don’t like it . . . imagine what I might say about that.  :)

I agree w/many of your points! Famous people (the ones that have stuck around after their 15 mins of fame) are where they are bc of determination. I wrote a blog recently on the same topic. “Living My Dreams- Never Give Up on Your Dreams” http://www.blog.danache.com. So often we start something and aren’t consistent, so we don’t see results and we give up. I’m speaking from experience here! But your dream is way too important to allow little obstacles and setbacks to deter you. Keep going!

the entire content of this article has been plagiarized.  In a facebook group called “After Narcissistic Abuse there is Light Life and Love”  she even starts it with “I have come up with….”

After Narcissistic Abuse – There is Light, Life & LoveApril 25At some point in the various journeys we embark on in our lives, we get to a part where we feel like giving up. Sometimes we give up before we even start and other times we give up just before we are about to make that huge break-through that we have been putting so much effort in to achieve.I have created this list of 22 reasons why you should never give up and I hope that you will find it before you give up, so that I can inspire you to keep going!1- As Long As You Are Alive Anything Is PossibleThe only valid excuse you have to give up is if you are dead. As long as you are alive (and healthy and free) you have the choice to keep trying until you finally succeed.2- Be RealisticThe chance of mastering something the first time you do it is almost non-existent. Everything takes time to learn and you will make mistakes. Learn from them.3- Michael JordanArguably the best basketball player of all time. He attributes his success to all his failures. He just never gave up even when he knew he had missed over 300 shots and had missed the winning shot of the game many times. Every time he got knocked down he got back up again.4- Lance ArmstrongLance was diagnosed with serious cancer that had spread throughout his entire body. He had cancer cells the size of golf balls in his lungs. Despite all odds he overcame the cancer and set out to win the Tour de France 6 Consecutive years in a row.5- Muhammad Ali“Float like a butterfly, sting like a bee”. Muhammad Ali is one of the best boxers the world has ever known. He suffered only 5 losses while having 56 wins and was the first boxer to win the lineal heavyweight championship three times. This is a guy who literally knows how to get knocked down and get back up.6- The Man Who Created The MarathonVery long ago an Athenian herald was sent to Sparta to get help when the Persians landed in Greece. It was said that he ran 240km in 2 days and after that he ran 40km to announce the victory of the Greeks only to collapse and die on the spot from exhaustion. If you ever feel like things are difficult, imagine what it would be like to run 240km in 2 days. (Don’t try that because you might die from it, but use it as an inspiration).7- Chris Gardner – The Pursuit of HappinessHave you seen the movie “The Pursuit of Happiness”? It is based on the life story of Chris Gardener, a man who went for the lowest of the lows in an environment where most people would give up (no money, no job) to the highest of the highs (A millionaire with his own investment firm). If you ever think about giving up, watch this movie!8- Kanye WestI’m pretty sure you have heard of the rapper Kanye West. Read his story. He is a big inspiration for me and proves that you can go from having very little to being among the most famous and respected people in the world.9- Nelson MandelaCampaigned for justice and freedom in his South Africa. Spent 20 years in jail for his opposition to apartheid. On release he healed the wounds of apartheid by his magnanimous attitude toward his former political enemies.10- You Are Strong You are stronger than you think. One little setback is not enough to stop you from achieving your goals. Neither are 10 or 100 or 1000 setbacks.11- Prove YourselfYou don’t want to be known as someone that is weak and gives up. Go out there and prove yourself to the world and to yourself. You CAN and WILL achieve what you set out to do. The only time you fail is when you give up.12- Has It Been Done Before? If someone else can do it then so can you. Even if it is only one other person in the world that has achieved what you have set out to achieve, that should be reason enough for you to never give up.13- Believe In Your DreamsDon’t sell yourself short. In life there are going to be many people who will try to bring you down and tell you what you want to achieve is not possible. Don’t let anyone destroy your dreams.14- Your Family and Friends.Let the people you love and who mean the world to you be your inspiration to persist and persevere. Maybe you need to try a different angle, study more or practice more but don’t give up!15- Because I Tell You To.Not that I am any sort of guru or Godly figure, but if you want to give up then don’t. Just because I’m telling you not to.16- There Are People Worse-OffRight now there are many people who are in a worse situation and environment than you are right now. Are you thinking about giving up running 5 miles a week? Think about the people who are unable to even walk and how much they would give to be able to run 5 miles every day.17- Improve Our WorldWhen you achieve whatever you set out to achieve you can use your success to make a difference to the world or other peoples lives.18- Get Rich or Die TryingLike Fiddy (50 cent) says, “Get rich or die trying”. 50 Cent is rich, he made it (although he did get shot 9 times). Face your fears and don’t take the easy way out by giving up.19- Let The Haters HateThere will always be haters. There will always be plenty of naysayers and people who try to tear you down. Don’t pay attention to them and don’t take what they say to heart. Let the haters hate and you keep believing in yourself.20- You Deserve To Be HappyDon’t ever let anybody tell you otherwise. You deserve to be happy and you deserve to have success. Keep that mindset and never give up until you reach your destination!21- Inspire OthersBe an inspiration to others by refusing to give up. Who knows what someone else can achieve because you never gave up and in turn inspired them not to give up.22- You Are So CloseOften when you feel like you want to give up and you are about to give up you are so close to making a huge break-thru. Seth Godin has written an awesome book about this called “The Dip” – a riveting read that teaches that at any given time you are always just a heartbeat away from success.

Ive suffered a migraine disease as well as fibromyalgia. I am always trying to be as positive as someone can be while in pain 24/7… until recently when my pain doc sent me to a pain clinic in Chapel Hill… when I talked to the Dr. they said it would be months and months until he would even CONSIDER treating me, and I had to meet with 2 other docs first (another half a year.) I was treated disrespectfully, and eyes watering and anger boiling, I stormed out without even making an apptmnt with someone who so blatantly treats me like sh*t. Soon after I found out the hospital funding my pain doc dropped both his offices, and he cant treat me until he finds another office. Its been months without progress. I also even tried a Methadone clinic for the sickness I got from abruptly stopping my painkiller regiment. The Suboxone they gave me made me even sicker, and my doc refused to change it. Then I requested Methadone (twice), but because im under 18 the Doc wouldnt even talk face to face, he just said no and that was it. Now, Im going to the ER every week, and the shit they give me doesnt help me at all. Now Im in daily excruciating pain, with no regular treatment. My specialist said Im beyond help for most other specialists, and the places hes suggested have either denied my insurance, or refused to treat anyone under 18.
Though I doubt anyone is reading this, I have to get it out… Im in so much pain I cant work, go to school, support my family financially, or even socialize with friends. Im confined to a lonely house, with about 5 hours max of social interaction a day… The pain has taken over my life, and though these people are reasons not to give up, they are all above what you can expect from the average person. Im no Lance Armstrong…

Though I doubt anybody will read this, or care for that matter; I have to say it. Im giving up… I dont want to live anymore. Even people at the ER wont listen to me, they’ll give me a couple meds and send me home. I cant live like this anymore. I want to end my life.
Nobody would care, as all I am is a burden. I dont want them to suffer at the hand of my own suffering anymore.

It still didn’t help me.  I mean I said something about my child and now the teachers are talking about it like it is ok to talk about a bad situation the child does.  He has a bad habit and thought it would help talking about it.  Here all they do is talk about it out in the open to each other while I am stand there waiting for my kid.  I STILL GIVE UP!!!!!!!  I feel so guilty and can’t afford to move again I don’t have the money.  I have complained about this to the principal and nothing is done about it because teachers have a strong union and cost lots of money and time after they have had 10 years in.  I hope those bitches burn in hell!  I ignore them because I don’t want anybody to know they are talking about me that is why I am silent when they do this.  I Give up on everything. I don’t know what to do except hide so it doesn’t get out.

Who’s opinion is worthless and who does not have any positive role models like Mandela.  This doesn’t work for everyone. At least black people are tall and athletic. We  Mexicans are ugly and only wanted to clean toilets.  It’s over, the only good I can do is to drink Energy drinks and be an asshole because it’s easier to make everyone detest me. most people give up becuase they have the wrong attitude they stop belieaving in themselves and they become posioned with complacantcy becoming hypocrits. No one will ever care about counting your shortcommings, setbacks, defeats, mistakes, problems whatever but should you only be judged on what you do because of them.

I just have to point out that the basic tenant of “the dip” in point 22 is actually “quit fast and often” and that “never giving up” is notoriously bad advice. Unless, you are absolutely sure it’s worth your time.

14- Your Family and Friends. – They forgot to add the last line to that one which is “If you don’t have family and friends or are on the road to not having family and friends then ignore everything else in this article and commit suicide tomorrow. You might as well be dead”. If you are pathologically incapable of romantically connecting with people then after your mid 20s when everyone fucks off and marries you will be without friends EITHER. Eventually your parents will die. If you are an only child then that will seal the deal and by the time you are in your mid 30s you will be a completely empty lifeless shell just sitting and waiting for death incapable of ever feeling any joy in your “life” again.

We’re not free. The system is making it more and more difficult to engage on the capitalist system. To be truly successful you must disengage this corrupt system completely. Working for the $ is a waste of life. I’d rather be poor. Therefore I give up on my business as nothing harder than having a successful moment to know its only getting harder and the govts and illuminati are the only ones benefiting from your hard efforts as you just manage to put food on the table. Also a lot of people who are famous have been placed in this positions to manipate us.

Actually, I had to stop at Lance Armstrong.

  • KD

the WORST thing you can EVER say to someone who is depressed enough to want to give up is “someone else has it worse” or “there are people worse off” .. it’s dismissive. You are essentially sayin’, the other person’s feelings or situation dosen’t matter.

  • guest

Need to replace Lance Armstrong too. He may have gone through a horrific ordeal with the cancer, but so have many other people. They don’t all cheat their way into winning competitions with the use of drugs.

  • Fe

prety bad article and..”Get rich or die trying”?Really? that’s your  approach for life? Why are you writing for something called “grow yourself”?

Thank you so much for all the insirationational quotes.  They have come at a crossroads in my life.  They were words of true wisdom, even if I was trying to run from them.  Just having to read the 22 alone and not give up because they were hitting a nerve!!.  Very impactful and emotional!!.  TThank god for your postings.

P.S.  Thank you, and godbless you and all those close to you!.

Lance Armstrong should be removed soon. Don’t want that cheating bastard as an example.

If you want a rapper as an example, take Eminem and not that smug son of a … Kanye

Great article thank you! I am shocked with all the negative comments, but then again negative people are always trying to spread their energy. And as you said there will always be haters trying to bring you down :) Thanks for bringing some positive encouragement to my day!

Okay, WONDERFUL article. I REALLY appreciate you. Gave me a LOT of inspiration. BUT…just like others….. KANYE WEST?? seriously?(No offense, anyway). There’s Eminem, Tupac, P.Diddy ( Yeah, Diddy’s family was almost BROKE. Now he’s the RICHEST RAPPER.), J-Lo ( She lived in a dance studio), and lots more……. and all you’ve got is KANYE?

Should include Croix Sather (www.croixsather.com and http://www.dreambigactbig.com). He went from a casual runner (aka really a non-runner) to running across the USA in 100 days while giving keynote speeches to at-risk groups. That’s the equivalent of running 100 consecutive marathons ! That is someone who Never Quit !

I would like bring myself down then like it get mad after the situation is done then like I have anger issues and like it would get mad at my self that I should of stand up for myself but like I just dont know wat or how to stand up for myself like really I just want to fit in with everyone and like it hurts me all the time and this kid ricardo he keeps askin me for gum and shit and like if I say I dont have any then he just like he act like he all funny and stuff like he was siting behind me and then he throw crums from the goldfishes in my hair like u know how annoying it is and like if I stand up for myself it would start doo much drama and like sometimes I just cry myself to sleep and then I also have bad self image of myself so it makes it even worst like in the outside I look like their could never be a problem but really it hurts me so bad that like I dont know wat to do my parents dont know but only my bestfriend knows

    • Josh

People love you. Stand up for yourself. I’m going through some rough times right now too. Just try your best and things get better. I don’t know all the details about your situation, but maybe try asking Ricardo to stop and if he continues, tell the teacher or whoever’s in charge. But try something. No one should have to cry themselves to sleep (I have and it sucks). Good luck and don’t even think about letting it continue to not cause a seen.

I love you morons who turn one man’s inspirational piece into your political battlefield. What’s wrong? Are the idiot forums all full? Go the hell away. Stop infecting intelligent discourse with your half-formed thoughts, baseless opinions and low IQ’s.

Go on, go on, go on. Had a bad past? Learn from it, recognise mistakes and change it. Keep trying. Get inspiration anywhere you can. The worst crime you can commit on yourself is killing yourself. You kill yourself, all is lost. You’d be surprised when you think about it, that there might always be someone who’d care in case you had killed yourself. When you read this, you’re still here, and I too. Open your eyes again. You’re not the only one. Use the things you’re good at, even when you don’t like to do them.
Oh, and one other thing: don’t give up; you’re not the only one.

  • Francesco

Oh, and don’t give up, you’re not the only one!

“Do not give up easily up of difficulties. Try to cultivate always two good habits in your life: PERSISTENCE & PATIENCE. You deserve to achieve all your dreams. It takes strength to reach the heights, and at the some time a lot of flexibility to bend to the ground.”

Lately I have been giving up in my school work and I have been thinking I’m not smart enough to get into college. But thanks to this blog post I realized that my future is all based on the actions I make now. I need to take your advice and get my head back into my school work and not giving up on my dreams of going to a good college!

I don’t have a problem with having kanye on the list he was in a huge accident still continued singing. He sang hey mama at a concert right after his mother died he was on stage singing and crying when he didn’t have to do that he worked hard . I’m not saying that he deserves the same credit as Nelson Mandela but he did work hard and became a huge influence in the music industry and deserves credit for not giving up and all his hard work

  • BullShitSpotter

Are you fucking kidding me? Fuck you and your pie in the sky bullshit. Kanya is an ignorant racist mother fucker and Lance Armstrong is a lying cheater who simply does not know right from wrong.

Some of us have loved ones who actually don’t want us to succeed for whatever reason. Maybe they have to give up something they want to do in order to be your support system. Nobody tells us when we get married, hey, the affection might be there now, but say in ten years, when your spouse loses that good job and you’ve got kids to raise, that he’s going to stand back and let you kill yourself on a 60 hour a week physically demanding night shift job. Nobody tells you that he might develop ED after taking a blow to his ego, like losing a job that he thought he’d be at till age sixty-five. Who knew your relatives would end up hating you because they did not like the contents of an elder’s will? Life can throw some mighty terrible curve-balls. You can be optimistic all the live long day. But you cannot always count on the people in your life to be supportive. What you can sometimes count on is jealousy and laziness. It takes a real strong person to get up and do what they have to do in the face of some obstacles.
